Have you heard? There’s a new VitaTop flavor! Pumpkin Spice! If you are unfamiliar with their products, Vitalicious was originally made famous for their 100 calorie brownie (at least that’s how I found them) but now have a line of VitaTops, VitaMuffins, VitaMixes, VitaCake (which I had for me 32 birthday :) and even VitaCoffee! Which I’ll never try as I’m not a coffee drinker (and no one will convert me, not even Jim Doran who’s been trying to forever!) ;)

I’ve already reviewed Golden Corn, Dark Chocolate Pomegranate, Banana Nut, Chocolate Mint and Apple Crumb. They are all pretty good but the choclate ones dominate in my opinion. How did the Pumpkin stack up? Well let me walk you through my little taste test via the web cam.

Upon initial inspection, I’m not that impressed with the pumpkin seeds on top…

I think I might of gotten gipped on this one. It sort of reminded me of that scene in casino. You know…

Oh how I love Deniro but I digress. :)

Looking past the seeds, I broke it in half and I must say the inside looked moist and delicious!

So I took a bite…

Oh.. My.. Word.. SO good. I mean really. I didn’t think I’d ever like a VitaTop flavor as much as I like the chocolate line but Pumpkin Spice is giving chocolate a run for it’s money! The flavor was spot on to cure that pumpkin baked good craving that seems to happen in the fall and winter months, all for 100 calories, 1g of fat, 26g of carbs, 8g of fiber and 3g of protien. That’s 1 old WWP and 3 new WWPP.

I like the idea of the seeds on top but honestly, they didn’t do much for me. For some reason I think of the seeds as a savory/salty snack and the pumpkin baked good as a sweet/dessert like snack and the two just don’t mix BUT it’s not a deal breaker. I actually popped off the few seeds I had and ate them separately. In my opinion Vitalicious could ditch them altogether but I’m curious what others think who’ve gotten a chance to try them.

Overall I give the Pumpkin Spice VitaTops a thumbs up.

Oh! and I ate mine after popping it the toaster on the highest setting right from the freezer. It came out perfect!

It can seriously take me months to read your average fiction book. Thankfully I discovered James Patterson. His short chapter approach matches my reading style, 2-3 pages a day. Seriously, it’s like I’m a ‘reading grazer’. A little here, a little there. Then I forget about it for a few days. Yet I still agree to do book reviews. Why? I love books. I really do. I just wish I had better reading habits.

Not surprisingly, a few MONTHS ago Kara Richardson Whitely sent me her book, Fat Woman on the Mountain: How I lost half myself and found happiness. It’s been on my must read list since meeting Kara at last years FitBloggin’ conference. She mentioned the book would be coming out this fall and I was happy to get her email when it did.

The book is about Kara’s journey to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Kara isn’t you typical mountain climber. She is an inspirational 120lb loser. In the book, she spends a couple of chapters talking about her childhood and weight struggles but her story is so much more than weight loss. It’s an inspirational tale of a woman who set a goal regardless of her weight or what people thought of it.

In her own words…

At age 30, I was lost within my own body. I dreamed of climbing
mountains but the only thing that went up was my weight — to
about 360 pounds.

During one New Year’s Eve, it all changed when I wrote down
what wanted to do instead of how many pounds I wanted to lose. I decided to look at weight loss as a lifelong journey and I got
moving. I resolved to climb mountains.

How inspirational is THAT?!? As someone who let her body image get in the way of life for too many years and I can totally relate to Kara and her story. Her book was moving, inspirational and motivating. REALLY motivating. While I was reading it, the husband was starting to get worried that I might sign up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. That’s how much I was talking about it.

Kara woke up one day and just did it. No excuses. No feeling sorry for herself. She put in the work and did the best she could. There is nothing more motivational than that.

Click here to order Kara’s book, Fat Woman on the Mountain: How I Lost Half of Myself and Found Happiness.

Last week I got a new shipment of VitaTops to try for product reviews. Vitalicious is a Roni’s Weigh sponsor and I’ve been working with them for quite some time. Anyone remember the VitaMix recipe contest I hosted way back when on GreenLiteBites? Well I’m hoping to do another fun contest/giveway this time here on Roni’s Weigh. I should have more info soon!

In the meantime, I thought I’d give you my thoughts on the new(er) Apple Crumb flavor. I tried it two ways. First defrosted when they were delivered and then toasted straight out of the freezer. By far the second way was my favorite.

When I opened the first package the smell was DIVINE. Very apple crumb but the "crumb" wasn’t too "crumby" which was disappointing. That’s the part I was most excited about. The flavor was good and there was chunks of apple in the top which was nice.

Since I wanted more "Crumb" I decided toasting one would help and it did! Today I took one out of the freezer and popped it straight into the toaster on level 5. The result was a nice crusty outside and a warm middle. It would be delicious warmed apples and cinnamon with a scoop of Bryers free. I’m getting all warm and fuzzy just think about it. :)

Bottom line is if you like the Blue Bran you’ll like the Apple Crumb. My favorites are still the Chocolate Mint and the Dark Chocolate Pomegranate. What can I say? I’m a chocolate girl at heart. :)

For those that don’t know, Vitatops are all around 100 calories, 1g of fat, 6g of fiber and 1 WWP. They may be found in the freezer section of your grocery store but you can also buy them online by clicking here. Be sure to use my code, RonisWeigh for 10% off!

Has anyone else tried it yet? Thoughts?

Full Disclosure: Vitalicious is a Roni’s Weigh Sponsor they supply products for me to sample. However all opinions expressed in this post are my own as the always are.

Let me start this review by saying you are either going to think this product is genius OR ridiculous. There is no in between.

Why?

Well you are either a scale person or you are not. I know many (Charlie comes to mind) that have years and years of weight data about themselves. Heck, I do as well! Remember my Weight Progress page?

Yea.. I haven’t updated that in quite some time. Mostly because I stopped going for my official Weight Watcher weigh ins but also because my scale habits have changed. I talked about this is an older post called Scale Habits? Gone Full Circle? where I broke down a bit of my scale history.

One of the stages I mention in that post is my daily weighing that lasted all through my losing phase and at least a year into maintenance. Not everyone will agree with this but for me daily weighing was a big part of my weight loss success. In a weird way it helped me disconnect from the number. To look at it as simply data, information. It kept me going and conscious of my food choices and how they effected the number.

During that time, every morning I’d wake up, pee, strip, hop on the scale and get into the shower (was that TMI? lol) it was a routine. I’d then jot down the number and post it on the blog like in this old post from 2007 – Yikes!

In addition to daily weighing I’d attend my Weight Watchers meeting once a week to get the "Official Weigh In" results which I would post on my Weight Progress page. Sometimes the numbers were the same, sometimes they were different but it didn’t matter. This is where I worked on that perfection gene I carry. By seeing that the scale so easily changed it’s mind (he’s a fickle jerk, isn’t he?) it helped me see that regardless what the number said on any given day, I was making progress. I was making good choices and the scale would reflect that over time.

This is a VERY long introduction to the product I’m about to review but I thought you should know where I’m coming from before giving my opinion on what I know will be a controversial product (controversial as in whether or not it’s a good idea.)

Basically the BodyTrace eScale is a regular bathroom scale with a big mouth. It wirelessly uploads your weight to the BodyTrace Web site so you can see your progress online!

Now.. I know it sounds scary and I realize this isn’t for everyone BUT if you are a like me and want to daily weigh, this thing is a life saver! I spend hours tracking my weight by hand and figuring out Excel to make my cheesy little graph…

Then I stopped after getting a new computer when I refused to buy Microsoft Office. Part of me wishes I kept them up. I like looking back at the data. I’m a geek, what can I say?

If I had the BodyTrace back then I’d have not only a prettier chart…

…but one that also tracked my BMI AND is interactive (you can slide and zoom into particular time periods when you are logged in). I may be alone, but I think this is freakin’ cool! –yes I know, geek, already established. ;)

Here’s how it works… you tap the scale to turn it on, hop on, get your reading and then ZAP! it sends it to the web site for you. It couldn’t be any easier.

The scale is sharp looking too. Something you wouldn’t mind having in your bathroom. And I believe if you don’t want to use the upload feature, you don’t have to. It could be used as just a regular scale as well.

I only have one teeny tiny complaint about the whole BodyTrace weight management concept and it’s this…

I absolutely HATE it when I get generic advice from a tool. This reminds me of the Wii and how absolutely brutal it could be with it’s weight loss advice. I wish it would just report the facts. That’s it. That’s all. I don’t need some backhanded comment about how long it’s taking me or how much I gained or whatever. Simple show me the figures. That’s all you need to do. And besides, being down 5 pounds in 2 months is FREAKIN AWESOME! no?

Regardless of that one little nit picky fact, I really do like BodyTrace. I recognize not everyone agrees with the daily weigh in philosophy but if you do this is a fun, easy way to record your scale readings.

I’ve joined the BodyTrace Affiliate program so if you are interested in learning more and possible purchasing one of your own, please click here. I’d appreciate it! Thanks. :)

Update: Gyula the Founder of BodyTrace has replied to our concerns about the unsolicited weight comments. Click here to read her response.

Have I ever told you I’m bag whore. I’m serious. I LOVE bags. I don’t mean the name brand Coach-y style you are buying a name brand bag bags (although my friend is slowly converting me) I mean functional bags, fun bags, bags from goodwill, totes, hobos, weekend bags, overnight bags, tiny bags and mega momma bags. I love them all.

So when Sheila from LiveWell360 asked me if I’d review their new Core Fitness Bag I immediately said yes. How could I possibly turn down a free bag?!?

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, what’s a "Fitness bag" anyway? I immediately thought of a duffel or traditional gym bag which are probably my least favorite type of bag. They are so nondescript, hard to carry and usually made out of yucky material.

Thankfully the Core is nothing like that. It doesn’t even look like a gym bag. It’s gray with a nice thick strap and an interesting easy to carry shape.

I actually used it for my trip to Boston and carried it on the plane. It was absolutely perfect to pack everything in for the weekend.

My favorite feature is by far the shoe pouch. How genius is this?!? A side zippered pocket so you can keep your stinky shoes away from your clothes. Surely this can’t be the first bag that has this feature but I really liked the way it was designed on this bag. I even shoved my dirty clothes in with the shoes on my trip back. Again, genius!

I totally give the Core bag 2 thumbs up (oh and so does the husband and he’s the more fashion minded of us) My only negative isn’t about the bag at all, it’s the price. $120 is a bit on the expense side. Then again, it will probably last longer then all the $30 bags I’ve thrown out because of broken straps. (I just had to toss out my favorite weekend bag for that very reason. :(

Click here if you are interested in pre-ordering the bag. LiveWell 360 is also running a contest until midnight tonight, called the What’s In Your Bag Giveaway. I’m a little late with my review. Sorry. :(

This makes a great Christmas gift! Click here to Buy the 360 Core Fitness Bag Now!

Disclosure: I am NOT affiliated with LiveWell 360. My only compensation for this review was the actual bag they shipped my to try.

A few weeks ago Jodi from IamBeyond.com asked if I’d be willing to try out some Beyond Yoga clothes to review for the site. Honestly, I was a little hesitant. Especially when I saw the price tag on some of the items. I’m just not the kind of person that spends 80 bucks on a pair of pants. And I’m talking jeans or dress pants. Yoga pants?? You’ve got to be kidding.

But I agreed and a few days later I received my pair of lagoon blue yoga pants and grey straight back cami (both pictured above). I was immediately impressed by the feel of the clothes. They were soft, luxurious and when I put them on, snug without being constrictive.

Since I received them I’ve worn them to the gym, to the movies, and even on my recent trip to California (totally awesome for long plane rides). Besides the feel of the clothes I’m most impressed by the supportive nature of the material. This cami has been the ONLY tank I’ve been able to wear bra-less with complete confidence. Seriously… I always thought those build in bra tops were a joke. I still always wore a bra with them anyway (I can’t be the only one!) but this one delivered, at least for me. I realize not all women are ummmmm “created equal” in that department. ;~P

Overall I’m quite impressed with the clothes. They have a great selection and I can’t see how any of their other pieces wouldn’t be of the same quality.

Any Beyond Yoga fans out there? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

If you are interested in trying any Beyond Yoga items for yourself be sure to use the promotion code RONI30 for 30% off your order at Beyond Yoga. It’s good until January 7, 2010.

Full Disclosure: Beyond Yoga shipped the clothes free of charge to me to try and I negotiated a discount for the readers of Roni’s Weigh. I have no relationship with Beyond Yoga and I was not paid for this review. (I will be putting disclosure statements like this on all future reviews due to the new regulations).

These soups are FANTASTIC. I’m not beating around the bush on this one. For the past few days I’ve been bringing a box and some crackers to work for lunch. The first day it was the Vegetable and I was worried it wouldn’t be enough to fill me up. I was wrong. The next day it was the Minestrone and I thought there was no way it would be as good as the Vegetable. I was wrong. Next I tried the Lentil thinking no way is it better them my version. It was. Today I brought the Black Bean and I just knew it would be good. It was.

I can’t say enough good things about these soups! They are hearty, filling, and tasty without being salty. They are all Vegan and 5 of the 7 flavors are Gluten Free. And the best part… I can pronounce everything on the ingredient list!

Each box is two servings (and rightfully so, it’s a big box) but they are so low in calories the whole box makes a perfect lunch. Especially considering how filling it is.

I haven’t tried all the flavors yet but I will! Here’s a breakdown with nutritional information for the entire box. That’s 2 servings.

Again, the nutritional information I have posted is for the whole box, 2 servings, just over 2 cups of soup. Pretty good calorie bargain if you ask me!

I told you I really can’t say enough but I’m curious what you guys think. Honestly, I never heard of Dr. McDougalls’ until they contacted me and sent me the soups. Am I the only one?

I’m assuming no. So I contacted them and asked if I could give a sample away on the site under one stipulation. If you win you have to come back and let us know what you think in the comments. That’s the deal. Ok? I need to know if I’m the only one that likes these soups this much!

So leave a comment if you’d like to enter the random drawing. Oh! and let me know if you have tried these soups before. I’d love to hear your opinions.

I’ll pick a winner this Sunday! Happy Tuesday everyone. :)

UPDATE: As per the questions in the comments…

I have been totally slacking in the workout department. Just haven’t been able to find my groove since moving and starting this full time job. So when Total Gym emailed asking if I’d review that, the Total Home Gym XLS, I hoped on the offer. Maybe having 80 odd exercises available to me on a moments notice would give me that much needed boost.

No such luck. It’s been sitting in my basement for over 2 weeks and I, unfortunately, only had a chance to use it twice. Both times were really great workouts! I just need to find more time to actually use it.

The machine is very pilates like. Which I didn’t expect. It’s got a great padded bench on a really smooth track. The pulley system is simply and I was surprised how it didn’t tangle or get twisted up.

There really are 80 different exercises you can do with the gym and they explain each one on large illustrated cards. There’s also routine recommendations, like upper body, lower body, 6-8 minute workouts and my personal favorite, long and lean. I did that one this morning and let me tell ya, I’m feeling it now.

My only complaint has to do with size. The unit is fairly large and you need a big area to workout as some of the exercises require you to swing your arms.

All in all it’s an awesome piece of equipment if you have the space and funds to afford it. Normally it goes for $1948.05 but right now they’re having a fall sale for $948.05. Click here to check it out.

Does anyone else have it or tried it? I’m hoping to get into a schedule with it. Working out 2-3 times a week would be nice. I have a question for all you home gym equipment people… do you workout regularly or does it collect dust in your basement? Because honestly, that’s what I’m worried about as I decide to keep it.

I didn’t understand. How was it a living thing and WHY would you want to eat it?

Of course as I got older I learned more about yogurt and what it is but I still didn’t like it. It wasn’t until I was pregnant that it started to sound appealing. Strange, I know. I literally never bought a container of yogurt until perusing my local grocery story about 3 months pregnant. All of sudden, it sounded good and I’ve been eating yogurt ever since. Go figure. lol

I started just buying the small cups of Dannon or Yoplait, which ever one was on sale Then I moved to the large tubs of fat free plain and started using it in recipes (everything from smoothies to salad dressings.) It’s such an awesome way to add a creaminess without any fat. Soon people where urging me to try Greek yogurt but I didn’t get it. I mean yogurt’s yogurt. Right?

Then I tried Fage. Boy was I wrong. Greek yogurt really is different. It’s thicker, tastier and well, just different! I enjoyed it even more. The problem is it’s not readily available where I shop. I’ve seen it in Trader Joe’s, of course, but my local store doesn’t carry it. So when Stonyfield asked me to try their new organic Greek style yogurt, OIkos, I was psyched! Stonyfield is a pretty popular brand and I know my store already carries their regular organic yogurt.

They shipped me plain, vanilla, honey and my favorite, blueberry. All were delicious. I even used the honey for a quick smoothie idea using mango and banana. I haven’t had Fage in awhile but from what I can remember it has a very similar taste and texture.

If you never tried a Greek Style here’s a bit of info from Stonyfield…

Oikos Organic is the only nationally distributed organic Greek yogurt on the market today.

Called “yiaourti” in Greece, Greek yogurt is thicker than regular yogurt. Authentic Greek yogurt like Oikos Organic owes its lavish texture to a centuries-old straining process that removes the whey (liquid) from the yogurt.

For hundreds of years, Greeks have prized strained yogurt for its richness and creaminess. Before the time of mechanical refrigeration, Greeks also knew that yogurt stayed fresh longer with the liquid strained off. Today we know that straining makes Greek yogurt naturally richer in protein than regular yogurt, and lower in carbohydrates.

Oikos Organic Greek yogurt reflects that tradition as a tangy, incredibly lush yogurt with twice the calcium of the leading Greek yogurt.

Other benefits of 0% Fat Oikos Organic Greek yogurt:

It’s diet friendly with 120 calories or less, 0g fat and up to 15g of protein per 5.3 oz. serving.

It includes five live and active cultures, including L. acidophilus, Bifidus and L. Casei.

It’s certified organic, made with milk from farms that don’t use toxic persistent chemicals and fertilizers, antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones.

An excellent source of hunger-satisfying protein, Oikos Organic Greek yogurt has no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners — no aspartame or sucralose, ever!

I also got word that they will be introducing a new strawberry flavor next month. Which I’m psyched for as I’ve always been a strawberry fiend myself. :)

Has anyone seen these at their local stores yet? Have you given it a try? Let me know!

Add water, click a few buttons on the microwave and have warm molten chocolate cake in minutes! Oh… and it’s only 150 calories?!? (3 wwp) That’s the thought behind Betty Crocker Warm Delight Minis and I think it’s pretty genius. However, you won’t catch me buying them anytime soon. There is enough temptation in my life already. I don’t need to know that on a whim I can make warm chocolate cake when ever I want. Seriously, that’s just a disaster waiting to happen.

That’s not to say they weren’t good. I had them in the pantry for weeks then one night the husband and I wanted something sweet before bed. So we made the two I was sent to review. To my surprise he actually liked it and so did I. How can you not like warm chocolate cake? It’s WARM CHOCOLATE CAKE! Of course we were both disappointed by the size but for 150 calories what did we really expect?

These are the kind of products you have to take at face value. You want something sweet? A controlled portion instead of eating a honking slice? then yeah, if you are going to eat it anyway, then chose the lesser evil. BUT don’t kid yourself, it’s still evil. First 3 ingredients… Sugar, Enriched Flour Bleached, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil –YIKES!

In the product’s defense they aren’t making any health claims besides the calories. They literally are just "mini" versions of their traditional cake mixes made for the individual who needs to cure a chocolate craving FAST! For that, they do do.
