I’m feeling much better then I’ve been these last few days. I’m not sure what was up with me. Unmotivated is an understatement. I was down in the dumps. Lazy. Uninterested in everything. In a funk, as I like to say.

It was like I just wanted to check out for a few days.

So I did. I did absolutely nothing on Sunday. Nothing.

At first I felt bad about it. Then I realized we all need some check out time. It’s good for the soul. :)

This morning I still woke up a bit down in the dumps but throughout the day as I got more and more productive at work I felt better and better.

I swear I’m a productivity whore. I thrive on accomplishing things. It’s a strange personality quirk, I know.

Anyway, something popped into my head on my drive home today and I just have to share.

You know that saying, "devils in the details" as in it’s the small details of something which make it difficult or challenging. Well I was pondering life and thinking of ways to stay on plan and be productive when a new phrase came to mind. . .

Progress is in the Planning

When I get into these funks the only way I pull myself out of them is by planning. I make lunches, create menus for the week, write up shopping lists and to do’s. Anything to help me feel a bit more productive.

Without fail I start to feel better. Especially when I get to reap the benefits of that planning.

Take today for example. At work I enjoyed all the healthy snacks I packed in my lunch the night before. I made progress because I planned. Even though Sunday I totally didn’t feel like packing a lunch. I did it because I knew it would would be a small step with big a payoff the next day. If I let the funk take over and went to work unprepared I would have spent money on an overpriced over-caloried crappy lunch. Which would have made me feel worse and brought me further down my path of funk. Simply by taking 5 minutes Sunday night I laid plans to help me make progress instead.

Does that make sense?

Probably not. I’m getting anxious as I want to head to bed early tonight. I better sign off.

Before I go I’ll leave you with a link to a post I wrote at work on SpeakHealth, my new favorite soup recipe I made up this weekend and my food journal for the day.

Today was a GREAT day… family fun… old friends… new neighbors… and way too much chocolate. Yes I said it… TOO MUCH CHOCOLATE. I mean it IS Halloween! What would halloween be without chocolate?

Could I have eaten a little less or none at all? sure. But guess what…

IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL! A few pieces of chocolate are no big deal. Heck.. even a WHOLE bunch of chocolate doesn’t matter. What does matter is day in and day out consistency. You can choose right now to to allow todays decisions to effect tomorrow or as Ralph Waldo Emerson said…

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense."

I’m choosing to begin tomorrow with a run. I have done nothing for myself since the marathon and I miss my time. I’ve procrastinated long enough.

Hope you had a WONDERFUL Halloween. I plan on enjoying the last few hours watching cheesy horror movies on TV. :)

I needed it as I prepare for a nice long run tomorrow morning. I have less then 8 weeks until the marathon… the FULL marathon. I’m freaking out a teensy weensy bit but I’m also looking forward to it. I just need to get out and DO IT. :)

I needed to find this quote after my day of cookies, candy, milk shakes, fries and chicken fingers. I feel… bleh,

I know one day is one day, now. But I also remember a time when I would consider a day like today a "failure. The difference between the me now and the me then is now I refuse to "stay down".

It’s about time I start the weekend quote tradition back up. I always have fun scouring the web for that one quote that speaks to me each week. This time it’s by Margaret Thatcher…

“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; its when you had everything to do, and you’ve done it.”

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this. Everyone always tells me how busy I am. "How do I get so much done?" "You always have so many things going on." "There always so much on your plate."

I’m crazy, I realize this and sometimes I get overwhelmed with all that try to accomplish but ever since I decided to overcome my body image fears and get out and DO things I’ve been a healthier happier person.

My blogs, the community, a new job, building a new house, training for a marathon, raising a four year old, running a household, cooking, organizing a conference, Geesh I AM nuts! BUT doing things makes me feel alive. This is one of the husband’s and I biggest problems. He would be perfectly content lounging around and doing nothing all day and that drives me bonkers! Guess what he’s doing right now…. that’s right… sleeping! :)

Anyway, I think this quote means more then accomplishing big things I think it’s the little ones which make the bigggest difference. Climbing that rock wall, trying that spinning class after work, taking the extra half and hour to cook a healthy meal WITH your family. It’s these small things that will not only leave you satisfied at the end of the day but help you reach your weight loss goals while finding peace with who you are now. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that when I started doing more I started worrying less about how fat I looked.

Do I still have fat thoughts? Sure. They are never going to go completely away for me. After my moving food fiasco I felt and feel a bit "bleh" but instead of crying about consuming too many calories I’ve been getting out and about. Yesterday I went for a run, walked around the farmers market with the toddler, recorded a video for GreenLiteBites, got my hair done, cooked dinner for the family, went to the driving range and played a game of putt putt. Today we are gearing up for a fireworks display tonight but only after a day at a local beach. Which reminds I got to pack some healthy snacks and lunches! Gotta run… bunches to DO! ;~)

I thought I’d be inspired to use it as the Weekend Quote when I ran the half marathon so I can discuss the correlation between training for that and losing weight. Both really did seem impossible for me to achieve when I started. I mean one was something I tried and failed at SO many times before I felt it defined me as a person and the other was something not even on my radar as being humanly possible until just a few months ago.

I find myself in a similar situation again. I’m feeling quite a bit stressed and looking ahead at my marathon training doesn’t help. I have a lot of things going on in my life and everything just seems so overwhelming right now.

I’m just having an off day. Skipping my workout this morning and pigging out today didn’t help either. *sigh* I need to take Mark Twain’s advice. Small manageable tasks. I’m focussing too much on the seemingly impossible and it’s just too overwhelming which is getting me down.

But you guys know me by now. I’m not letting these feeling get out of control. Tomorrow I shall run in my Anniversary 5k. The Bel Air Town Run was my very first race ever and I hope to make it a yearly tradition. The husband and the toddler will be joining me this time. While I try to beat my time from last year they will be enjoying the 1 mile run/walk. My little guy is ecstatic that he gets to wear his first bib number and I’m ecstatic that he’s ecstatic. :) I’ll be back tomorrow with pictures!
