The other day I found myself at a Dunkin Donuts. Did you ever think you’d read those words on my blog? :~) I was picking up donuts for the husband, don’t get me started, and I was hungry. UGH! Talk about temptation! Thankfully I was there after a run and honestly had no desire for a donut. But I was hungry, and that’s when I remembered DD Smart Menu.

I’ve been meaning to try an Egg White Veggie Flatbread Sandwich for weeks. Now, before I give you my review you have to understand my stance on fast food breakfasts. I hate them. I’m not kidding, there is something that grosses me out about fast food eggs. Plus they always pair it with cheese and I’m just not a fan of cheese and egg together. Yes, yes, I know, I’m crazy.

So where am I going with this? Oh yeah. Well, it was GOOD! I mean it. Cheese and all, I really liked this breakfast option. The egg white was firm, cooked through. The flatbread had a nice texture and flavor and I even didn’t mind the cheese slice! It wasn’t overbearing.

My biggest complain isn’t about the food but the fact that you can’t custom the order. I originally asked for no cheese but the sandwiches are pre-made so you don’t have a choice. Other then that and not being all nice and neat like the picture, it was a winner in my book. I can’t wait to try the Turkey Sausage one!

Here are my top picks from the menu. Be warned, don’t assume low points just because something’s on the DD Smart menu. The Reduced Fat Blueberry Muffin is still 8 points. Yikes! Makes me wonder about the “regular”! I don’t know about you but an 8 point muffin isn’t worth it. I’d rather have the egg sandwich and a tea with some fruit.

Oh! and don’t ask me why the veggie has more fat then the sausage, it makes NO sense to me!

Just by chance the other day the husband wanted to go to Kentucky Fried Chicken for lunch. I told you all, fast food junky, right? Anyway, I said sure and crossed my fingers that I’d have the strength to get something not dripping in fast food fried grease.

The KFC we decided to hit was actually one of those new fangled double joints, with a Taco Bell and a KFC under the same roof. I LOVE this idea as the husband and I rarely agree on anything and the double fast food place gives us the most options.

Anyway, as I scanned the menu to choose the healthiest options I could find, I came across the Taco Bell Fresco menu. Everything looked like pretty good choices! So I took a leap and ordered the Fresco Zesty Chicken Border Bowl. It was a delicious mish mosh of rice, beans, lettuce, chicken and salsa, very tasty and filling!

Coming home I again, crossed my fingers as I looked up the nutritional information. Surprisingly weighing in at 350 calories, 8g of fat and 10g of fiber it was a great lunch choice, only 7 points! For fast food, that ain’t bad! I then proceeded to look up the entire Fresco menu and all the options a very point friendly!

So I added a Taco Bell section to my Fast Food page. With nine options that are 7 points or less, I’ll be steering the husband to KFC/Taco Bell when he has a Fast Food craving in the future! (Shhh Taco Bell’s always been my favorite anyway, I have a soft spot for mexican inspired flavors.)

The Southwest Salad

I had 2 already and I can NOT believe I’m advertising for McD’s but hey, it’s good and when you are married to a fast food junky, it’s great to have options.

The Salad with grilled chicken is 6 points (6.4 to be exact)(and that’s with tortilla strips!) and the the bag of dressing is 2.5. But trust me you DO NOT need the dressing. The salad is just perfect with a squirt of lime juice and there is a lime in the salad.

Honestly, it’s one of the most satisfying salads I’ve had out in awhile.

I don’t think I’ve ever ranted on this blog. Have I? Well I’m about due.

Let me start at the beginning….

I’ve had a long busy day, running here, running there, trying to squish too many things in 24 hour period as usual. There was no time for dinner so I decided the little guy and I would hit the drive thru on the way to the gym. I really wanted Chick-fil-a but Burger King was on the way so I settled. I should go on the record as saying I think Burger King has the worst options for anyone who is WeightWhatchen but that’s not he point. So I order the best I can…

For the toddler – Kid’s Meal with 4 Chicken Nuggets, applesauce and a milk
For mommy – A Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich no mayo and a bottle of water

Not too bad for a meal on the run, although not my first choice.

Note the key words “ON THE RUN”. That’s when you want to hit the drive thru, right? When you are busy, on the run, and don’t have time to go in and eat. Translation… I’M IN A HURRY!!!

Oh… Did I warn you the rant has started??

So WHY is it that drive thrus take F-O-R-E-V-E-R. I should NOT be sitting in my car for 15 minutes, stuck with NO ESCAPE. In 15 minutes, I could whip up a much healthier meal at home. I’m paying these fast food places for a service. That service is food, fast because I don’t have time. If I had time, I sure as heck would NOT be wasting it sitting in a drive through with a whinny toddler and a growling stomach.

This isn’t just one occurrence, every time I go to one of these “fast” food places it takes FOREVER to get food that’s not even good for me. Plus, most of the time the food itself doesn’t even taste good either. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a greasy burger and fries as much as the next guy, I just don’t indulge as much as I used to. So when I do, I want it I want it fast and I want it good. Not with a stale bun, cold French fries and nuggets that have been sitting in a drawer for 4 and half hours.

Alright so all that and I’m not even to the best part yet. So after waiting 15 minutes for my slow food, I pay, pleasantly I should add, saying thank you, and smiling. Do I get the same courtesy and respect in return? Do I get a “sorry for the wait”? or a even just a “you’re welcome” to my “thank you”? NOOOoooo I get treated with disdain, like I am such a burden on this person’s day at work. I’m sorry you work there, but it is your job to serve people pleasantly. I know it sucks, I know you are tired, you feel greasy and gross. You want to know why I know? I did it. I worked at McDonald’s for 5 years, yes YEARS. And when I did I was pleasant to customers. I gave them respected, apologized when I took a long time or messed up an order.

Speaking of messing up an order there is one more aspect to this story I didn’t tell you about yet. The best best part is yet to come.

I drive away with food in hand. After all that and I’m still going to make the class at least. I get to the gym parking lot where the toddler and I are going to picnic in the car. I get his kid’s meal ready and sure enough, no applesauce, just cold fries. Unbelievable. Ok, I figure not a big deal, it’s a common mistake. I take a deep breath, pull out my sandwich, and notice it doesn’t feel right. It’s not the round. It’s their original FRIED chicken sandwhich with BACON on it. WHAT? Could it be the polar opposite of what I wanted any more? This is beyond unbelievable. All of that and they got the WHOLE ORDER WRONG!!! I am NOT kidding.

So that’s it. That’s the straw that broke the camel’s back. I am TIRED of paying for bad (UNHEALTHY) food and bad service at these “fast” foods joints. I’m done.

My husband is not going to like this, but I am starting a boycott of fast food restaurants that do not provide good service or good food. Life is too short to waste a meal on junk and deal with bad service.

Will you join me? Can you do it? Can you vow to avoid fast food? Are you already doing it? Let me know and spread the word.

phew I never ranted before. Man that felt good! ;~)

I don’t normally hop on the McDonald’s bandwagon but I tried their new Southwest Salad with grilled Chicken for lunch. Oh My WORD! It was delicious! I ate every morsel on the plate. It came with a Newman’s dressing that I didn’t even open, it didn’t need it at all! There was a lime in there so I squirted that on everything. The chicken was moist and marinated in something, I don’t know what, but boy was it tasty! I didn’t order it special at all. I just made sure to get grilled chicken. It came with a bit of cheese and tortilla strips. As is, the salad is only 320 cals with 9 g of fat and 7 g of fiber that’s with chicken, cheese and Tortillas! I will definitely be getting this again!!

For dinner, I had no desire to cook whatsoever and recommended a pizza. Of course, the husband hoped right on the idea. I don’t normally go for pizza, being afraid I’lll go overboard. Tonight we got a large thin crust from Papa Johns. It’s 5 points a slice. I ate 3, Hubby had 3 and the toddler ate 2! It was perfect, no leftovers! Pizza in the fridge is a bad thing. I can hear it calling my name until it’s gone. I swear pizza is the devil! The DEVIL I say!

Ok, so I’m exaggerating a little. ;~)
