Hi Roni..

Good Morning…

I am a single mom and need additional income…Can you tell me about how much do you get paid for these advertising ads? Did they contact you or did you contact them.

Thanks…I have alot of college debt from raising 3 kids by myself and need to find a way to supplement my current job…Thanks so much…love the look of your site….don’t know if I can pull it off but with this information it will let me know if I should even try..

Thanks so much

Jan Lange

Hi Jan,

Unfortunately earning an income from a blog takes a lot of time and hard work. It took me 2 years to earn any money that could even be considered supplimenting my income and I have a background in web development giving me a slight edge over other bloggers.

I don’t want to discourage you from trying just want you to have a realistic goal.

Sites like this make it sounds easy but it’s at least a part time job if you want to attract readers and build a name for yourself online. Here’s an older post that lists many of the sources I use to generate income.

Also, here’s a post I wrote about this very subject earlier this year and another on some of the revenue sources I use.

Hope that helps and good luck on whatever you decide to do!

-Roni

P.S. Any other bloggers like to chime in? I’d love to hear your advice for Jan.

I had an interesting conversation this morning. I work as a web designer for Research Center at a University. They are very, VERY, talented when it comes to media, animation, editing, writing, film, etc. Blogging, on the other hand, doesn’t come as naturally. I’m awed and intrigued at the fundamental differences in the way a blogger thinks verses an artist.

For me a blog, or any web site for that matter, is a living breathing piece of work. It’s growing. It’s evolving. It’s never “finished”. Never perfect. It just lives. You choose to either nurture it and allow it to grow or abandon it and let it die.

However, movies, animations, art work, etc, are generally not seen until they are completed. The creator spends countless hours perfecting the piece of work until it is, in essence, perfect.

This is such a foreign concept to me and one of the reasons I have a problem working in other forms of media. I’ve been toying with the idea of publishing a cook book for years based on my on GreenLiteBites but I can’t seem to get passed the finality of it. In my mind nothing is every finished and therefore never ready for print.

Am I crazy here? What are your thoughts on this? Do you see each post you publish as a finished piece of writing or is it just another addition to a larger piece of work that you are building in real time? Or am I over thinking this entire concept. Something I tend to do a lot. :)

You guys know I LOVE a good giveaway! :) Well I think this one is my favorite yet! Emily of theBlogFairy.com is nice enough to donate her time to create 3 custom blog headers for my readers! How sweet is THAT! If you’ve ever tried to design a site or header yourself you know it is quite labor intensive. And if you are anything like me you work and work on it forever and it never turns out the way you want. I’d much rather leave it up to a professional. :)

So here’s the deal. Click here to check out Emily’s Sample Headers. She even has cool slideshow so all you have to do is sit back, relax and marvel at her design skills. Then come back here, and leave a comment to enter. In the comment be sure to let Emily know which of the designs was your favorite. This will initially give her an idea of your style and then if you win you guys can discuss the details of your header further.

I love this contest because anyone can enter! No restriction other then you have to have a blog that needs a facelift! :)

I’ll randomly pick three winners next wed. Good Luck!

I wrote this awhile back for my friends blog but I thought I publish it here for posterity. I think it gives you a good idea where I’m coming from. Plus ya just need content for a new blog! :~P

It’s hard telling people I blog for living. Reactions range from “what’s a blog?” to “How do you make money?” People are curious but they also don’t understand that blogging is, or should I say, can be, a business.

I didn’t start out building a brand or incorporating a business entity. I started out writing about a passion of mine, weight loss. It was something personal and I used the blog as a journal and creative outlet that was helping me reach personal goals.

At first no one read except my mom and a few close friends. Honestly, I never anticipated getting many more readers then that. It wasn’t my initial goal. I was just expressing myself in a medium I knew well as a web developer.

But something happened. After a few months I realized others were reading. They were commenting, asking me questions and I was responding. Happily responding. I started to see the blog as a means to connect with people that had similar interests and goals as I did. I realized I could use the blog to not only help me reach my goals but I can help others reach theirs as well.

This was empowering and inspirational for me. I realized I loved writing (when I’m talking about myself anyway ;~P) and I love helping and connecting with others. Blogging was fun and allowing me to be creative but to turn it into a business? Now THAT takes work, a lot of work.

That’s the one thing people don’t understand the most. Blogging is so much more then writing and publishing articles online. My typical day consists of some writing, sure, but a majority of my time is reading and socializing. It’s reaching out to others, exploring new opportunities and technologies and most importantly staying passionate about my niche.

These things are all time consuming and I didn’t even get to the “business” part of it. What makes a blog a business? Well… money of course! All of the connecting and socializing is fun but I still need to pay the bills. Monetizing a blog takes even more time and energy. There’s a lot of research and trial and error involved. What works for one blog may not work for another and to find what works for yours takes, well… more time!

Some people ask why (or how) I do it when it requires so much time and energy. My answer is always, simply… “Because I LOVE it!”. I love keeping up with the trends in social media, I love the technical challenge of it, the creative aspect of visual design and layout, the writing provides an outlet and most importantly, I love the connection I make with people. That is number one for me. I have communicated and learned from people all over the world and everyday I meet someone new who affects me in a positive way.

It may have been crazy for me to leave a full time faculty position to pursue a career in such an emerging field. I make less money, work more and have no idea where I’m going. BUT it’s fun and I’m LOVING every minute of it.

I hope, with this new blog, to help others who may not have the technical background or experience I do. Please ask an blogging or technical questions to have and I’ll be glad to help! :)

Before I start this post I have to scream something…

I’M DONE EDITING VIDEO…… YAY!

lol

If any of you follow me on twitter or facebook you probably are SICK of me complaining. Anyway, let me back up for a minute as most of you have NO idea what I’m talking about.

A few weeks ago Nokia emailed asking If I’d be willing to trial one of their new camera phones, the N96 to record a "Day in the Life". Apparently they selected a few bloggers from across the interweb in different niches and I was one of the lucky ones that get picked!

I was, dare I say, MORE then excited as I thought they were actually GIVING me the phone. Honestly, I ran upstairs to tell the husband ecstatically as I was coincidentally in the market for a new phone at the time.

I should have known it was too good to be true.

Through our correspondence I realized it was only a TRIAL. Meaning after I was done recording I’d have to give the camera/phone back. :( oh… well… I knew I’d still have fun! When will I learn that nothing in life is free? lol

Anyway, so my take on the phone… VERY COOL. Most phones have a camera but not many cameras have a phone. Know what I mean? That’s how I would describe this device, it’s truly a Camera then a Phone. The video quality is awesome. Photo capturing with the large screen amazing. Even navigating through your recorded photos and videos was a cinch.

I’m not sure the camera would replace my current one for my food photos as it’s close up capabilities seemed lacking. But for an over all utility camera, especially for a blogger, this device is sweet. It’s 5 megapixel camera blows by LG Dare out of the water. It also has 16GB of memory AND you can watch TV on it!

Ok…. I’m not going to get any more geek then that. I told I need a new geek blog. :)

So here it is. The video start with a makep-less me coming out of the bathroom and includes sneak peaks into my pantry, my fridge, my spice cabinet even my iTunes. I make two dishes, pick up the toddler, we play cars, make his lunch, I go the gym, my sink even leaks! It’s truly just random clips of my life within a 24 (well, 27) hour time frame.

The video below will play through each clip in sequence. If you place your mouse over the video you’ll see all the clips and you can hop around. They are all in order as I recorded them. You can also click here to see the playlist I put together on YouTube.

Ok, I’ll let the video speak for itself. It’s quite long and boring and you may be surprised at how much junk we actually eat for all that I preach. I was. And let me tell ya… the starburst morning habit is NO MORE but we still do go the Candy Store every Thursday. :)

I did it! I finished my twitter food journal generator! Here’s the deal, use twitter to track what you eat through out the day then come here and, enter your twitter name and generate a table for your blog. How cool is that?!? Yes, yes, I know, I’m a genius! ;~)

In all seriousness, this idea smacked me across the face when journaling my food yesterday. I realized using twitter was much easier then emailing myself and then copy and pasting to the blog.

If you don’t twitter, have no fear! It’s as easy as pie. Sign up here. Once you do simply type a message and click update. That’s it!

Still twitter-phobic? My old table generator is still available!

So without any further ado, I present my food journal generated from the new Tweet, Eat, Post generator. Read more about it and how it works on the Tweet, Eat, Post! page.

OK, how cool is THIS! For a limited time Vitalicious is offering a Roni’s Favorite Package! It has all of my favorite VitaTops in it. Four each of Deep Chocolate, Golden Corn, Triple Chocolate Chunk, Dark Chocolate Pomegranate, Fudgy Peanut Butter Chip, and Double Chocolate Dream. The only products missing from the pack that I’d consider on my favorites list are the brownie and chocolate muffin mixes. (are you seeing a theme here? Ummm chocolate!) ;~P In all seriousness, this is an exclusive offer for my readers ONLY, the only way to purchase the Ronis Favorite Pack is from this link! Remember, use the RonisWeigh code for 10% off!

The other announcement is coming completely out of left field. Yesterday I mentioned I was going to start tracking my food journal on twitter. I’m always online anyway, so why not? Plus you know I’ll confess anything and everything. So I’m hoping it makes me reconsider my night time snack choices. Where is this going? Well, I had a brainstorm today! What if we are able to tweet what we eat and then have the table for our blogs generated automatically? Wouldn’t that be cool? Well I’m almost done with a prototype and if you’d be willing I’d love for you guys to test for me!

So today I’m all about my first product and my new blog tool. I’ve been working non-stop only taking a break for family dinner and a boot camp! I even made some progress on the cook book today! Can you tell I’m excited? :~) I’m in one of those motivated moods!

Ok, I’m off to work on the "Tweet what you eat" tool. If you want to see my food journal check out my twitter feed for now. Just scroll down to see the "Food:" posts.

The long awaited new food journal is ready!

OK, well maybe I’m talking it up a bit. There’s only been a few of you waiting, ummm, about 2 weeks for it. ;~P

In all seriousness, a few weeks ago, in an attempt to be a bit more accountable, I invented yet another food journal table for my week in weight loss mode. I will be using it again this week for some post vacation journaling. I’m always changing up the format, hopefully making it better, for me, at least. ;~)

So give it a test drive and let me know how it works for you. I’ve tested it on a few browsers but you just never know, so if it doesn’t work correctly please let me know in the comments.

Simply fill out the forms as they appear, scroll down then copy and paste!
