I tried SO hard to record a podcast today. I really did. First, the phone rang, then the microwave repair guy showed up early (long story,) then the baby woke up early from nap. It was an absolute disaster. Laughable really.

I could record now, but it’s 9PM and with both kids in bed all I have energy for is this: Blogging with the laptop on the couch watching TV.

SO… I thought I’d pluck one and do it the old fashioned way. This question came in from Michelle…

Clearly, you had no trouble about sharing your weight loss journey, since you know, wrote a blog. But now a days social media is so prevalent. How much is over share? Like today, I made my first real post on Facebook about the journey I am on, and I almost did not post it, because it felt like I was fishing for complements. I will also admit to thinking the same thing of friends who have done the same (although it was after the like fourth post of the day of a similar nature) I feel awkward about it.

I love love love this question and I could answer it with one little quote…

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

Any time I’m worried about sharing an accomplishment or an opinion I think of that quote. It reminds me there will always be people who "mind" regardless of what I say or do, so why filter?

I really think it comes down to owning your accomplishments. You can call it "bragging" but it comes from a different place. When you share your weight loss or workouts or healthy food choices it’s pride, not arrogance. Sure if you went around saying things like…

"HA! I lost 2 pounds this week and you didn’t! nanny nanny poo poo."

you’d be an arrogant braggart but if you say…

"Hey guys, proud of myself this week, I lost two pounds!"

What’s wrong with that? Who’s going to have a problems with that?

You know who will? Those that are jealous, bitter or just plain jerks.

I read the most amazing blog post a few months ago by The Feminist Breeder called The World Needs More Women Who Brag About Their Accomplishments. It’s a must read and I share her thoughts EXACTLY….

Confidence is contagious, and should be threatening to no one. Own your achievements. Love them, AND yourself.

It’s really that simple. Whether you earn a degree, get a promotion, lose a pound, run your first mile, cook a healthy dish or make a healthy choice, OWN IT.

I refuse to publish another video with out of sync audio so I had to transfer the file to my old computer and export it there. Maddening! Anyway, I won’t bore you with my geek vents. Let’s get on with the podcast!

Topics this week include:

Can’t stop watching the clock and obsessing over food!

Losing the last 15lbs

What keeps me motivated day-to-day?

Hi Roni,

I noticed that when I went to subscribe to Roni’s Weigh, you had a bunch of great extras that I would love to have on my RSS feed as well.

Could you tell me how you:
1. track how many subscribers you have to your RSS feed.
2. Have that “if you’re not reading this in your feed reader or on [site], this is stolen” text in each post.

Thank you in advance for your help. I have tried a few methods for tracking RSS subscribers, and not a single thing seems to work. I’m new at this blogging thing, so any help would be super appreciated!

Mandy

Hi Mandy!

SO sorry for my late reply! I have 2 quick and (hopefully) easy answers for you.

1. Tracking RSS Subscribers

I use Feedburner to track all feeds for my sites. It’s works like this…

You “burn” your feed.

Feedburner gives you a unique feed URL.

Publicize feedburner URL instead of your feed url.

For example my base feed here is http://roninoone.com/feed/ but if you click my RSS feed button to the left you’ll notice it links to http://feeds.feedburner.com/Roninoone

By routing people to the FeedBurner address I’m able to not only track subscribers but publicize, optimize, and even monetize my feed.

2. Add an RSS Footer in each post.

I do this through a function in WordPress, but there is a slightly less compicated way using CSS as well. Click here to see my tutorial.

I hope that helps Mandy!

You may have noticed Ask Roni podcasts have been few and far between. I just can’t seem to carve out an hour to record and edit. My plan is to ease back into them. I fear making any promises at this time, having a 6 month old at home is just too much of a variable!

That being said, I will answer at least one question a week until I get my video groove back. This weeks question is from Jane...

Hi Roni~ I am a long-time lurker on your blog :-). I am a 40 year old working mom of 3 (so very busy) and I am trying HARD to establish the habit of planning meals (all of mine and those of the family) so I can follow through with eating less on a regular basis. I do plan ahead with the best of intentions, but I get too hungry if I don’t bring enough food to work and then my best intentions go out the window. Also, when the family goes out to eat, I have a hard time sticking to my plan. I am only 5 foot 3 so I do not get to eat that much. :-( I have had food issues since I have been an adult and I think about it all the time (I hate that!). I even go so far in my own mind as to repeat a mantra to myself that my self worth is not based on my body fat percentage. I would love to get to the place where I can "equalize" and just plan and go with it and not feel like a failure. As I have followed you through the years, it seems as if you have the planning down. Is this because you only plan what you like to eat? Or because you know your plan will change and you build in flexibility? Any thoughts you have are appreciated~

Best Regards,

Jane

Hi Jane!

I totally understand where you are coming from. The concept of "equalizing" or what I call "finding my balance" has always been my goal. You asked if it’s planning or flexibility that help me, well, it’s a little bit of both.

When I first started I planned each day in the morning, pulling out what I was going to cook for dinner, making my lunch for work, and then eating breakfast. At that time it’s what worked for me. As the times changed, I had to change. Now I plan the family’s meals on Sunday which helps me shop and ward off The Husband’s requests to eat out (which seem to be daily!)

Regardless how I do it, you must find a way that works for you and your family. Trying to force something normally backfires. Ask yourself questions like… When do you shop for the week? What kind of meals does your family like? What will be the fastest to pull together after a busy day at work? What can you keep in stock that will help you when plans fall through?

Because they will, fall through that is, and that’s where being flexible comes in.

In addition to planning, I have a set of "rules" that allow me to be successful when things don’t go exactly the way I wanted them to. For example, I have go-to menu items at every. single. fast food place. I also have a family rule that only ONE of us can get fries which we all split. If we go out to a "sit down restaurant," I stick to grilled dishes, skip the carb and ask for extra veggies. These aren’t set in stone rules, just techniques I use allowing me to be flexible without feeling like I have to go "off plan." (side note: click here for my eating out strategies)

This probably isn’t what you want to hear, but you have to figure out what’s going to work for you. I don’t have the magic answer or the perfect solution. I’m constantly figuring things out as I go because things are always changing, especially when you have kids.

There is one thing you said in your email that I’m curious about. When you mentioned planning meals you said, "all of mine and those of the family" It sounds like you are planning separate meals for them and you. I hope that’s not true. I think it’s important to strike a balance between you and your family’s needs. I know it’s hard. BELIEVE ME I married a man who has no interested in a healthy diet WHATSOEVER! ugh.

Anyway, I wish I had a more specific answer for you. I’m hoping others will chime in and offer their advice in the comments.
