One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

A 2 Soundtrack Sensational Sunday

This morning I was able to sleep until 8:30 — EIGHT THIRTY! This is unheard of at my house. If it’s not the kids waking me up at the butt crack of dawn it’s my stupid body, which is now trained to get up at  5 a.m., thanks to hitting the gym super early for the past three years.

Not this morning though. The kids slept in and I actually got more than 6 hours for a change. I think I’m on the eve of a new stage in parenting as the kids age. I’m not going to lie, I’m welcoming their adolescence and independence with open arms.

When the kids and I woke up we cuddled on the couch watching nature shows before mustering up enough energy to get the day started. Before too long, however, their rumbling tummies got us moving and I made some oatmeal — The Most Amazing Bowl of Oatmeal EVER! in fact– for breakfast.

Then it was music blasting time.

I have found that the simple act of turning off the TV makes us so much more productive and happier. There’s always resistance at first but then the kids come around and start playing.

proud kids :)

It helps to play music they like to get them excited. This morning we made the first of our sensational Sunday soundtracks…

It’s all their current favorite songs, which is the best backdrop to getting chores done.

kids doing chores

While they played and cleaned I prepped.

food prep

Hard boiled eggs (made this way) and a pot of “kitchen sink” chili to use up all the aging vegetables in the fridge and give me easy lunches.

My goal this week is NO EATING OUT! The Husband is going to ask every damn day and I’m just going to have to say no. I can’t do it anymore. Something I want to be the exception is becoming the rule and I just need to put my foot down.

With chores done, I lost the 10-Year-Old to the Xbox but the 5-Year-Old and I had more work to do.

cutting fruit

We cut a watermelon and pineapple for the week while eating hard boiled eggs.

This is about the only way I can get a little fruit in the guy. He’s still not a fan but when he helps cut there’s always a few pieces that find their way into his mouth.

The Husband headed outside to do the yard, which totally trumps hanging out with Mom in the kitchen so I lost my little helper.

And with that I was left alone at noon, after a fabulously productive morning.

Lunch came soon enough. We ate together and decided what to do for the rest of the day. I wanted to take a hike but the boys wanted to go to the driving range.  I was going to suck it up and go with them but then somehow it turned into “boys day out.”

Works for me! I got to hike alone at my pace and go where I wanted to go with no whining and complaining. Hey, I love taking the kids on the trails, but if you have kids you know how fast their enthusiasm waivers.

Without them I covered 5 miles…

while listening to soundtrack No. 2…

… and I wasn’t rushed on the lookout point.

pot rocks

I just relaxed, listened to my music and took in the view.

It was an amazing afternoon. When I got back I folded laundry, made dinner and then family settled in to watch The Peanuts movie.

watching a movie

I don’t think today could have been any more perfect. Especially considering The Husband is right now helping the 5-year-old bathe and then it’s bed for him and Game of Thrones for us! It’s like the icing on the Sensational Sunday cake!

What a seriously awesome day! I love all the pics of the kids. I can’t believe how tall Ryan is already! And when I clicked over to the oatmeal recipe, aww….your Little Bean isn’t so little anymore. Cheers for a great week ahead!

not gonna lie…I LOVE your sensational Sundays best..the family pics….the fun you have….it’s like a circle-ing in each week to what really matters and a chance to regroup and recharge and just be together….I can’t believe how fast the boys are growing!!!!!!
on another note…I totally am in the same boat with eating out…it is so much easier to grab and eat than to prepare a meal at home after working all day…but I love to cook… AND I find I spend just as much for my weekly groceries as I do when we don’t eat out. so it is more costly in that regard.
I, too, love to prep foods on Sundays. it’s so awesome Little Bean helps now. I remember the days when Ryan always helped you cook. btw, Ryan is growing so tall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love you and your blogs!

News about kids and cooking is okay . . . but on to much more important matters: namely, Daenerys Targaryen.
