It’s time I confess my love of tomato juice, specifically V8. Even as a kid I loved it and still, to this day it’s my drink of choice on flights.  So when V8 reached out to see if I was interested in reviewing their new protein line I was all ears.

They sent me 3 shakes: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Chocolate Raspberry.

And 3 bars: Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Pomegranate, and Oatmeal Raisin.

As someone who’s looking for a convenient post-workout option the shakes appealed to me most. I tried the chocolate first but the chocolate raspberry won me over for best flavor. There’s something about the added raspberry kick that helps mask that typical protein taste you get in a premade shake.

Each shake has 12 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, a quarter cup of vegetables, no high fructose corn syrup and as much calcium and Vitamin D as a glass of milk. The protein comes from a blend of dairy, soy, pea, brown rice and quinoa and is sweetened with honey and sugar.  Speaking of, the sugar contents are pretty high (ranging from 24-29g in the shake) but as an after workout option, I don’t mind fast absorbing carbs much. Actually, I need them in the morning post-my-crazy-CrossFit-workouts.

The bars actually have a lot less sugar (13-16g) but funny enough I found the oatmeal raisin too sweet. The chocolate pomegranate one was by far my favorite but I only got a chance to eat a few bites before The-9-Year-Old stole it from me. He’s starting to enter that pre-teen-eat-everything-insight age. I can just feel it.

Each bar has 10 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, no high fructose corn syrup and a quarter cup of vegetables.

      No, but we’ve had quite a few busy weekend this year. Yesterday I was exhausted after a full day of filming and work. It’s just getting harder as the kids get older. :)

    These items just showed up in my grocer shelves in the last month. No one I knew was willing to give either of these items a shot & working in a buying office I mentioned to the grocery buyer about these finds and his rep didn’t even realize they came out with them. I’ve been looking for a way to up my protein, but don’t want to eat too many processed foods with ingredients I can not pronounce. What was your take on the ingredients in these items? Clean?

      It isn’t horrible but I thin it could be better. The ingredient lists are pretty long but I recognize most things. These are the “other” things…

    I love regular V8 – this added protein would be great. I can’t do sugar or some of the other ingredients in these, but I can see where for some they’d be a great post-workout snack.

    I bought the shakes recently on a whim after my husband had a root canal. Must say I was not a fan of the taste personally, and liked even less the sugar/calories/protein ratio. I went back to my greek yogurt!

    I had no idea V8 had a protein line! I love that I can take their juices on the go- I’ve been on the road so much lately, packing healthy options is essential!

    I don’t just like fruit juice, v8 always makes veggie juice taste goood!

    I haven’t tried these but my rule of thumb is that it’s got to have more protein than sugar or I won’t buy or eat it.
