One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

Just One Drawer

9 Comments 2136 views

I just got done cleaning out a dresser drawer — just one. It was just what I needed to bump up my motivation and it took all but 5 minutes. I purged anything that no longer served me whether it was too small, too big, or not worn for over a year. I even cleared out my running event shirts — well, the ones I never wear anyway.  Why do I need to hold onto stuff I don’t wear?

What’s the point?

It just doesn’t make any sense.

My plan is to do the same in the kitchen, too. My pantry and cabinets are a a disaster and I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way I’m going to ever tackle them is if I do it one drawer/cabinet at a time.

So that’s the plan: one drawer/cabinet a day until it’s done.

You guys may need to keep me honest about this one. It may take more motivation than staying on a diet! Speaking of, I’ve been reading so much about this FODMAP stuff. It’s fascinating. I’m on day 2 of no dairy and I’ve been really conscious of grains.

Today I did a little food prep. I made the BEST chicken cutlets lightly breaded in almond flour mixed with smoked paprika, sweet paprika, thyme, cardamom and salt then pan fried in coconut oil.

Totally yum. I ate one for lunch and then another at dinner atop some spaghetti squash with a little sauce.

I also experimented with some large collard green leaves and wrapped some leftover pulled pork in them, smothered them in some tomato sauce and roasted them. I didn’t take a picture as things like that tend to taste better than they look — you know what I mean?

On the workout front I killed it this morning! My gym is starting a new challenge every few weeks and this time around it’s a 1000k row for time.  I took a stab at it this morning and beat my own time by like 15 seconds!

I’ve never been able to do it under 4 minutes and today it was, well, I wouldn’t say effortless but very doable! Right now I have the fastest female time at the gym but I doubt it will hold.

Anyway, that was my Saturday. I’m writing this while watching the OITNB finale and it’s taking me forever because I keep getting sucked in. I should go.  lol

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

That’s so funny! I cleaned out one drawer in my kitchen today and thought of you the whole time! I remembering reading on your blog a while back about taking 5 minutes to organize or clean something. Totally works! One drawer down.

Just a thought if you are interested in keeping your tshirts as memorabilia, my mom made me a tshirt quilt – and I’ve seen some ideas about wrapping shirts around canvas frames and then hanging up….just a thought – I’m all for purging and yet some things are harder to let go of….

One drawer a day is a GREAT goal! Reading everyone’s blogs this week is making me add like three dozen goals to my list! ;)

I am organizing too. My studio is all tore apart. It was hard at first, to let go but the more I did, the easier it got! One thing that helps me, especially with clothing is this trick….hold the piece in your hands….do you love it? Or are you keeping it because you think you should? If you love it, put it back, otherwise, let it go. This approach really helped me a lot.
If I do one box a day for the next four days, I will be done with all the boxes I had pulled out of the studio. Only things I really love and want, are going back in. I am excited to see my studio getting better and better!
Next stop…my kitchen. Just because Mom had that glass pan, doesn’t mean I have to keep FOUR glass pans that are all the same. At the least, I will pick the two best ones and donate the rest to a thrift shop.
You can do it Roni! And as you organize, remember wycwyc :)

My husband has been and is going back on a low FODMAP diet. It is tough. I am a foodie and big on nutrition and have lost a lot of weight (twice) so food is important in our house. It totally fixed his stomach issues but also contributed to some depression. We worked through most of that and now are identifying the individual things that cause him troubles (tomato soup is a biggie, as we found out last night :( This blog has been very helpful and informative…. There are also a couple of good apps for android (and I am sure for iPhones) to help when you are out and about. Good luck.

I’m going room by room this year and cleaning stuff OUT! I’m torn between trying to sell some of it or just donating everything.
