What Makes a Perfect Pair of Workout Capris?

18 Comments 2398 views

Last week I got an email from one of my favorite workout clothing companies, Hylete. Actually, I call them my favorite “workout clothing company” but really, all I buy from them is capris (aka tights.) I think they make the world’s most perfect pair of workout pants.

The email was an announcement about their new cropped pant.

I was ecstatic! A new workout capri? Fun colors? From the maker of the already perfect capri? I’m in!

A few months ago I signed up for their affiliate program and I happen to have exactly the right amount in my account for one pair including shipping so that’s what I ordered — thanks to everyone who ordered by the way!

My new pants came Saturday and I was excited to give them a try this morning at the gym.

Ten minutes into the warm-up my excitement was completely replaced by frustration. I had to constantly adjust them! There was no elasticity to hold them up, they slowly crept lower and lower with any kind of movement — ANY movement and we had 7 minutes of burpees to do! It wasn’t pretty.

I came home and kept them on for my daily walk to The 3-Year-Old’s school. I decided not to adjust them on the way back. By the time I came home I had material bunched down my legs and a good extra 2-3 inches of crotch.

Capri Crotch

The picture really doesn’t do my discomfort justice.

So I decided to compare these horrible workout crops with my favorite workout capris of all time. I can’t believe they are made by the same company.

First of all look how elastic the waistband is. I know it’s hard to tell by photos but I thought we’d give it a try.

The ones on the left are the new ones. Notice how easily I can stretch the waist band. There is no compression. No snugness. The ones on the right are hard to pull  from my body. We can call them “tight” but it’s not an uncomfortable tight. It’s the they-stay-in -place tightness that I love.

I should note both pairs are the same size, a medium.

Comparing the material (something I should have done BEFORE I ordered them) I can see why.

  • The crops on the left (the ones I don’t like) are: 85% Bamboo Charcoal Poly / 15% Spandex
  • The capris on the right (my favorite) are: 87% Nylon / 13% Spandex blend

I guess I’m a Nylon/Spandex girl!

I will admit both pants do have a higher waist for those us who don’t want to show thong or ass crack. Although my favorite pair (again the photo on the right) are quite a bit higher which I think is the big reason they are so comfy and stay in place.

For me it comes down to the waist band clearing my hip bones. It may not be the most flattering cut but they stay put and I never have to adjust mid workout.

Right now, I can honestly say the Hylete Cross Training Tights are my absolute favorite item of workout clothing, especially for CrossFit, and I shall not stray again! Here I am in the pink pair at my last competition.

I simply never have to adjust them and, like a good sports bra, I forget they’re even on.

So at the end of the day I think there are only two things that help make the perfect pair of workout capris perfect for me:

  1. Snug material that will stay put but not feel tight.
  2. High-waisted band that clears hip bones.

What about you? What Makes a Perfect Pair of Workout Capris for you?

Buying workout clothes drives me crazy. I have 6 pairs of the same exact workout shorts (I wear shorts all year, can’t stand having anything longer). This is after trying out a million brands, they don’t fit right. Forget sports bras, and workout tanks, a lot of the tanks I can’t even pull down over my shoulders, let alone wear them. Sizes vary so much between not only brands, but styles within brands. Most Nike M tanks fit great, Reebok.. can pull them on, but not able to breathe. Boo

I SO agree. Nothing ever seems to fit right and once I find something that works I try to buy a bunch because they always end up discontinuing my favorite lines!

Victoria’s Secrets line are the best EVER! Thick material, a draw string waist, no camel toe. I have bought EVERY kind imaginable and these win hands down for comfort and style. (I CrossFit and teach spin so I need full range of motion and do creep down over my booty)

Man, i just signed up on the website and all the Cross Training Tights are sold out in my size :( hopefully they will be back soon! Thanks for the recommendation. I love Lululemon, but way too expensive to have a lot of pairs.

YES! I know. :( I’m waiting for the day clothing companies will just cover a wider range of sizes! And we can do away with the whole idea of “plus”

High waisted workout pants are the best thing ever. I have one pair from Zella that fit the bill and the rest of my pants, tights, capris, and shorts all have to be constantly adjusted, which is a serious bummer. Also on my list of things I’d like fixed are tops that are billed as “running” tops that have NO POCKETS – where the heck am I supposed to put my phone and the emergency Life Savers I need to carry with me in case my blood sugar goes low while I’m running (Im diabetic)?

Workout clothes are almost worse than jeans in terms of high expectations/disappointing results!

Roni, you have to try Athleta. I discovered their catalog a few years ago and they have really great stuff. They finally opened an Athleta store here in Charlotte, NC which makes me very happy! Anyway, their relay capri is my favorite. It fits perfectly, doesn’t give muffin top and stays put at the natural waist. They can be a bit pricey – owned by Banana, Gap, etc, but their stuff is great quality and really does fit well. Love!

I decided to give these a try based on your recommendation. They were backordered but finally came in. Wow! These pants are great. They fit perfectly! I’m so in love. My daughter even asked if my workout pants were new and said they looked good on me – out of the blue. Definite winners.

High-waisted workout pants? I didn’t know there was such a thing. I loved your post on underwear and found some new favorites, so I’m going to go with your recommendation and place an order. And now I can celebrate that I can fit into these pants due to the 85 pounds I’ve lost! Your blog has really helped me keep perspective during my journey and focus on total health, not just numbers.
