Introducing The Happy Thanks-I-Can-MOVE-Giving Challenge

73 Comments 6619 views

Am I the only one who’s shocked that Thanksgiving is LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY?! I have nothing ready and I’m hosting for, ummm let me see, this year… 12. OK, that’s not too too bad, but considering  my fridge is empty and I have no turkey ordered or anything, I’m freaking out, slightly.  I’ll have to get my act together this weekend, but first I thought it would be fun to launch a little challenge.

The idea hit me after seeing Thea post about the HBBC Challenge. “Great idea,” I thought but then I looked at the time frame and it’s like 6 weeks. I don’t know about you but I can’t commit to something for 6 weeks through the holiday season. I’m a week-by-week, even day-by-day girl.  So I thought, why not launch my own shorter challenge? Then if we like it, we can do another one, and another one and another one through out the holiday season. This way, the commitment doesn’t seem so daunting.

I truly am all the about the baby steps. #wycwyc, am I right?

Here’s what I’m thinking: The Happy Thanks-I-Can-MOVE-Giving Challenge is two-fold and it’s inspired by, well, Thanksgiving of course — Thanks and Giving to be more specific.

Thanks

The first part of the challenge is to give thanks for the mere fact we can move! SO many people look at working out or exercising like a punishment or a chore. Let’s reframe that this week. Let’s celebrate that we have amazing bodies that allow us to move and experience the world!

If you are committing to the challenge, you are committing to moving at least 30 minutes a day. That could be a walk, a run, a class at the gym, roller skating, a game of tag in the back yard with the kids, I don’t care! It just needs to be 30 minutes of deliberate activity every day.

Giving

The second part of the challenge is all about giving, but I have ulterior motives as well. I am on a mission to live a “stuff-free” life. I’m tired of things. I want to do, not have, and I want my kids to understand the difference. This is a lofty personal goal and I have a long way to go but again, I’m all about starting small. So if you join me on this challenge you are committing to giving at least one item away to charity by the end of the week.

Bonus

To spread the Happy Thanks-I-Can-MOVE-Giving love, post daily on the social media channel of your choice about something you are grateful for. Not a big social media fan? Do it here in the comments. I’ll be posting daily myself and updating on my progress through the challenge.

If you like, feel free to steal my challenge graphic and invite your friends to join us!

ThanksgivingChallenge

We can use the hashtag #TGChallenge to find each other.

Prizes – Requirements

I thought about not having any prizes but they do make the whole challenge more fun. So I decided on something simple and useful during the holiday season: $100 gift cards for Amazon. I have 3 to give away!

However, I’m also not a big rules person so this is going to be simple:  If you accept my challenge and want to be entered to win one of three $100 Amazon gift cards all you need to do is:

  • Leave a comment on this post accepting  The Happy Thanks-I-Can-MOVE-Giving Challenge.
  • Update us on your progress (how are you moving?) at least 4 times throughout the week in the comments — I’ll be posting daily updates myself so you can follow along with me and chime in.
  • Post a photo of what you donated. You can share the photo with us any way you like on social media or in the comments. Just leave the photo or link on Saturday’s Happy Thanks-I-Can-MOVE-Giving Challenge wrap-up post.
  • Use the hashtag #TGChallenge if you post to social media.

Since the prizes are gift cards, there are no restrictions. All I’ll need is an email address to send the gift card to. I’ll pick winners Monday, Dec 1 randomly (I use random.org) from all those who complete the challenge by next Sunday.

That’s it!

So, will you join me in moving more and having less this Thanksgiving week?

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

However, to prevent the massive amounts of spam I was receiving I have turned off comments on any post older than 5 days old. If you'd like to leave me a note regarding this post or anything really try me on twitter (@RoniNoone,) my Facebook page, or even IG (@RoniNoone) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. Roni, you know I am IN! This sounds great. I have been proud of myself for doing concentrated activity/exercise for 5 out of 7 days a week the past two weeks, so this will be a good push for me! Love the other aspects of the challenge, too. Thank YOU! :)

I am going to take the The Happy Thanks-I-Can-MOVE-Giving Challenge. I really like the idea of a “stuff free” life. Maybe that could be one of my goals for 2015 with a jump start with this challenge.

I’m in! And I’ll start with today’s moment of gratitude:

Yes, I’m thankful for my health. I’m thankful that, in January 2008, I found the inspiration to jump back on the healthy-living bandwagon. I’m thankful that since then, motivation has become habit, and that “healthy living” is not a struggle for me.

I’m thankful that I’ve beaten the odds and—not counting pregnancy and postpartum recovery—I’ve maintained a 140-pound loss for over 5 years.

I’m thankful that I genuinely love to fill my plate with veggies, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and lean protein.

I’m thankful that my healthy lifestyle has sustained me through losing both of my parents, infertility, a surprise pregnancy, the first two years of mommyhood, and a cancer scare with my husband.

I’m thankful that, at 40 years old, I ran almost 6.5 miles this morning and will still have the energy to take the little guy to play at the mall later this morning.

I’m in and I’ll start by saying just how grateful I am to have two awesome dogs in our family! Maggie, is a very ill 13 year old lab who was “supposed” to pass away months ago, according to the last vet visit in March. We stopped forcing pills and running to the vet every 10 days. And the 2 weeks the vet gave her have stretched into 8 months. She is happy and and as active as she can be.. We are blessed to have another holiday season with our girl! And, our 6 year old greyhound, Tigger , is there for walks and comic relief. I love my dogs!

I want to play! I played football with my son yesterday- I am grateful for the gorgeous back yard for the kids to play and also two healthy, energetic kids who CAN run and play. I am grateful for the time off school and work this week too! We have a perpetual donation bag going- I’ll be sure to make time this week to drop it off! It’s also time to do some toy clean out before Santa brings more. Ug.

I’m in. And I’ve been struggling with the exercise and eating right thing as a whole lately so hopefully this will help.

I am thankful for your sites, as a whole, and check them almost daily. Someday I hope to be in maintenance, vs. the dreaded yo-yo and you give me confidence that I’ll, eventually, be able to shake off the past cycles and head trips and move on already.

And my knee is starting to feel better so I’m gonna drag my 3 year old to the gym with me today and get in a swim.

    Have a great day.

Started the challenge off with a 15 mile bike ride with my husband today. The wind was howling and my daughter was still sleeping since there is no school all week, but I knew I’d feel better if I got up and got it done. Thanks for giving me the extra push!

This is perfect for me right now, I am in! I have been sick and got out of my exercise routine so this is just what I need to get back in the game. Thanks, Roni!

This challenge really has me thinking. I am so thankful that I can wycwyc. This way of thinking has really helped my all or nothing mentality. Even with the purging. I figured I would tackle a little bit of my closet every day of the challenge. Yesterday I took a walk and was thankful for all the fall smells and colors. Today I walked to yoga and back. Thanks

    Jamie

    November 25, 2014

Woo hoo! Yesterday I dragged my 6 yo on a walk/ run. I am grateful that I have had some time off work this week to be able to do MORE with my kiddos!

    November 25, 2014

I read this over the weekend and mentally accepted the challenge but did not get a chance to comment. I helped my mom move over the weekend and more then doubled my average daily step count. Now I need to work on getting my step count up each day and this challenge is a great way to start!

I am thankful for my health and the fact that I am able to move at all. I’m still in recovery from a wicked foot injury that has lingered for more than a year now, but I am so far improved from this time last year. I may not be able to complete my turkey trot as planned, but I will still remain as active as can be.

Also, I’m very thankful to be able to participate in an event to help feed the needy for Thanksgiving.

Checking in for Day 3 – a 40-minute run with my best friend. I’m thankful for her and the encouragement she gave me to try running one year ago. Now, a year later, we meet twice a week for a morning run. We get to catch up from the week, watch the sun rise, and see the world awaken. A true blessing.

I’m thankful that after a major back surgery there are still things I can do for fitness. Sometimes i have a pity party that I can’t do all the things I want but I am grateful for the little things. Today I gt to the gym early and did 40 min of cardio on elliptical.

Day 4 check in. Lovely bike ride on a crisp fall morning, an amazing pilates mat class, and my first spin class at a specialized spin studio. Kicked my bootie but was a lot of fun. Dropped of donations to the domestic violence shelter. Whew. Now ready to board my flight to go home for the holidays. I love that the challenge has motivated me this week. I’ve attached a picture of my donation bag. I live in a tiny studio apartment so I’ve already been trying to halt the clutter creep.

Day 4 Check-in! I wasn’t able to get traditional exercise in, but did decide that I would work it with a chore I HATE doing but is good exercise indeed – cleaning the walls! I spent over an hour doing that in the kitchen. Functional exercise is probably my favorite. :) Today I am thankful that I am having a quiet and intimate Thanksgiving with my partner of almost 15 years. We’re both looking forward to sausage stuffing!

Check-in #5. I ran 40 minutes this morning while still out of town for Thanksgiving. The hills just about about killed this flatlander from Texas but I’m so glad I did it. I don’t think I would have if it wasn’t for this challenge. It really motivated me!
