One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

CrossFit Competition and Sensational Sunday-ness!

This weekend. Where do I begin?

OK, the competition. Well, I placed pretty much where I thought I would. I was hoping for a 10 spot right in the middle of the pack but ended up in 12th. Hey, I’ll take it. Competition was FIERCE! And some of the workouts included lifts that I’m just not that seasoned in.

For all my fellow CrossFit geeks, what follows will make sense. Everyone else, feel free to roll your eyes and scroll through.

Workout 1:

  • 800m run
  • 20 pushups
  • Power Clean (75lbs) Ladder w/ 20 Double Unders (2 Cleans – 20 DU – 4 cleans – 20 DU – 6 cleans – 20 DU and so on)

There was a 10-minute time cap — I made it through 5 rounds, finished the 10 cleans and 20 double. Overall I did great. Wish I was better at stringing together my cleans but I’m not sure I could have done this one any better.

Here are a few shots from the professional photographer on site.

Workout 2:

4 minute time cap.

  • 40 seconds as many reps as possible of Overhead Squats at 55lbs
  • 20 seconds rest
  • 40 seconds as many reps as possible of Overhead Squats at 65lbs
  • 20 seconds rest
  • 40 seconds as many reps as possible of Overhead Squats at 75lbs
  • 20 seconds rest
  • 40 seconds as many reps as possible of Overhead Squats at 95lbs

This was the one that pulled my score down. I rarely do overhead squats and when I do I normally don’t go over 45lbs. So I was in uncharted territory. I ended up doing 11 at 55, 4 and 65, 2 at 75 and 0 at 95. I attempted 1 at 95lbs but bailed on it. It wasn’t worth risking injury just for a few more points.

Here’s a shot my friend took on her phone…

As you can see. I was in the zone. lol

Workout 3:

Death by 10m + 100m

This is going to be hard to explain. Basically you have to sprint 10 meters, then run 100m to the next starting point within the first minute. Then on minute 2 you have to run two 10m sprints and then the 100m back to the start. Then minute 3 it’s three 10m sprints plus the 100m. You keep this up until you can’t finish the sprints and run before the start of the next minute. I made it through nine and I was WIPED. I really needed a few minutes after this one to catch my breath. It really pushed me.

Workout 4:

5 Burpees/20lb Kettle Bell Thrusters Every Minute on the Minute for 10 Minutes

This is one of those workouts that doesn’t sound too bad. Then you attempt  it and it kicks your butt! In the 10 minutes I was able to complete all the burpees and a total of 85 thrusters. It was INTENSE!

Here’s a photographer shot of me with the kettle bells before a thruster attempt…

I had an AMAZING time and these competitions just make me want to keep going. I love seeing my progress. I love the spirit of the competition. The sport of it. The atmosphere. It’s just an awesome experience. I’m already looking forward to doing another one but first I have to make it through my marathon alive!

Speaking of, today I cut my training run short. It was just too much after the competition to do 5 miles. So I just took a leisurely recovery run around my neighborhood and listened to a podcast.

As for today’s Sensational Sunday it was awesome! I didn’t get as much done as I wanted to but we had a blast hanging out with the kids. Here are a few shots I snapped throughout the day.

It was just Little Bean and me in the morning (everyone slept in) so I made us some banana and apple with peanut butter for a quick breakfast.

Paper airplane fun!

This is how I left them when I went for my run.

I decided to make a pork shoulder in the crock pot so I wouldn’t have to worry about dinner. Plus it would give me lots of leftovers for the week!

Not everyone was happy about our traditional eggs and bacon for Sunday brunch.

Car wash time while Dad did the yard.

They had too much fun.

The afternoon was spent at Brickfest. We had a blast! Although, walking around an expo with a 3-year-old can get a little daunting.

Dinner! All I had to do was shred the pork and roast a veggie.

It was a total hit!

Phew! That was a lot. I’m rushing to get to bed. It’s almost 10 and I have an early morning.

Hope you had a great weekend!!

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

Hi Roni, when you first started doing cross fit and lifting weights did you have major aches and pains? And I mean, MAJOR! I don’t work out but did a class the other day. I’m on day 4 of feeling like my thighs and arms (and other muscles) are too sore to do anything and I’m wondering if I just over-did it or if this is “normal” soreness for a first-timer? (Even trying to get my top over my head was painful).

YES! Super sore and I learned to push through. I recover better when I would go regularly even if I take it light the next day. There are some times I can’t put on or take off my darn sports bra!

    You so rock.

Oh, and that’s my mom’s neighborhood! She lives in the condos at the top of the quarry.
