My ALDI Product Picks

15 Comments 1902 views

During yesterday’s snowy morning I made it to my local ALDI for a bit of shopping.

ALDI Store

I haven’t been there in quite a few months. Since moving in 2009 I just got out of the habit. So I decided to shop with fresh eyes and share my finds in a video …

As you  can see they have quite the selection. I was excited to see some fun cheeses, milk alternatives, a bigger selection of meats and snacks (those veggie chips are AWESOME!) than I was used to. They also have lots of nuts — I just happen to have too many at home already — and the produce selection looked great. Honestly, the only thing I was looking for that I couldn’t find was some brown rice or whole wheat noodles but I’m pretty sure they carry them.

Did I miss any of your ALDI staples? Please share your favorite product in the comments. I’d love to know!

I haven’t been to Aldi’s in months.. but it’s closer to my home than Trader Joes is.. I am hooked on TJ’s unsweetened almond milk.. I sure wish Aldi’s would carry a almond milk unsweetened.. I was also waiting .. patiently.. lol.. for you to tell me about that bag that says Cherries.. are they dried? Do they carry a good line or nuts, seeds and dried fruits now? Thanks so much for doing the videos.. I really love your blog..

SO funny! I realized I forgot to mention the dried fruit. They are dried cherries. I like to keep them in stock for salads and they have a great selection and variety.

They did have lots of nuts and a good looking dark chocolate trail mix but I didn’t buy it because it’s the kind of thing I could easily go over board on. I only noticed sunflower seeds in single servings by the register but I could have missed them.

      Glad you liked the video!

That’s great! I’ll have to ask at mine to see if they carry it!

Lisa. They do carry unsweetened almond milk in plain and vanilla now. Only stinky thing is that it has more additives than the Silk brand. But if Silk isn’t on sale or I don’t want to make a trip it works. Taste about the same as Silk. Roni they now carry organic pasta, but I don’t remember seeing brown rice only white.

My family shops at ALDI weekly. We feed a family of 4 (2 adults, one adult child, and one teen) for about $120-$140 a week. This includes 3 meals a day, since we all pack a lunch and we rarely eat out. Occasionally, we supplement with TJs or the local major chain. There are 6 Aldi stores within 10 miles of my house. The fact that the US headquarters is about 1.5 miles from home is probably the reason there are so many nearby. (Is the Aldi test kitchen in the headquarters?) Not all Aldi stores carry every item. I remember being jealous that Roni had baby spinach at her store but I couldn’t get it at my local Aldi. I’m happy to report that a short time later it was there on the shelf. YEA!! As Roni mentioned, some items are “seasonal” — they are only on the shelf certain times a year. Other items come and go multiple times per year — the Italian, the German, and Asian specialties, etc. Additional items are “special buys” — once they are sold out, they are gone. But I have noticed that some “special buys” become regular shelf items at a later time — the rib-eye steaks, for example. There are also items that look almost identical to similar items at TJs. (I wonder if the brothers’ companies “talk” to each other.) Even when we travel across the country, I google for the local Aldi wherever we go — not always can we find one. (sad face, here).

There has been an Aldi right down the street from me for a while now, but I have yet to venture in there! Mostly because there is also 2 Publix, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, SuperTarget and SuperWalmart all within 2 miles of me that I spread my time between to get things that the other doesn’t have!
I did see a circular box of cheese that looked just like Laughing Cow called Happy Farm in the break room at work. So I googled it, and it came up as an Aldi brand, so that alone might get me to visit!
Thanks for sharing all these great finds!

I did check out the Aldi near me after your last post about it, and found several things I really like! I bought 2 lb of frozen tilapia for about $6 and it tastes just fine…I also picked up some feta cheese and guacamole (don’t remember the brands, they were not name brands I recognized so probably Aldi brands) and have been very happy with them as well. But my absolute favorite find was some salsa by Wholly Salsa (same company that makes Wholly Guacamole, if you are familiar)…I LOVE this salsa! As in, I am addicted!!! I went back last night and bought 5 more! I am hoping it is a regular item for them and not an overflow or I truly might cry. I picked up some “gourmet” pasta sauce last night to try, too…hoping I will be just as pleased with it as everything else so far!

I like Aldi but we have a place here in Cincinnati area called Jungle Jim’s–it has everything under the sun but it also has high prices.

How much was your bill for everything you showed in the video?

It was just over $100 but I didn’t share everything I bought, like cat litter, garbage bags, plastic wrap and things like that.
