The past few days I’ve been feeling off. My body was fighting off a stomach bug and I just felt sluggish and out of my element.

This morning was the first day I woke up and felt almost normal. I got the kids breakfast, bundled up and headed to the gym.

When I got back I had a smile from ear to ear.


We started a new weight training cycle and I’m excited about it. Since the new year I’ve been keeping a journal and really tracking my progress. I know I’ve come a long way in the past year but I haven’t really been keeping notes and honestly, I’m really getting into it. I feel so strong and athletic.

Besides my renewed motivation at the gym, I kept my food journal today — click here to see it. I’m giving a little more thought to my pre- and post-workout food choices. I used to go on an empty stomach and then not eat for an hour or two afterward. It wasn’t my way of trying to lose weight or anything, I just didn’t give it much thought and, frankly, I’m busy in the morning.

Now I’m curious to see if my food choices and more systematic approach affect my performance at the gym.

OMG, did I just say that? WHO AM I?

I really am feeling motivated and ready to tackle the world.

That being said I feel SO far behind in other areas of my life. My house is a mess, my inbox is overflowing, and I have all these little nagging errands to run. The kids finally went back to school today after  a couple of snow days. Speaking of, my #2014RunSteak is going strong even with the frigid temperatures.


I can only hack a mile because it’s miserable out there but I’m doing it!

Told you. Motivated.  :)

Right now I’m battling the I’m-tired-the-kids-are-finally-in-bed-I-deserve-a-snack munchies even though I’m not hungry. My solution? I’m going to bed.

    I struggle with the ” my child is in bed, I am tired and want some SUGAR” I need to go to bed.. but my problem is this is happening at 8 pm! And I work my hardest with all my cleaning, church work, blogs, me time 8-12… (yea I am not getting enough sleep)

    I am finding that pre/post/during workout food matters a great deal. I’m a slow runner but would like to be faster and have about 15 pounds to lose yet. I have found a couple of sites that I’m really liking lately. I really like the athlete part of each site but they have recipes for pre and post work out snacks. I’m not a vegan or vegetarian but I like the recipes and think I can modify them.

    hi, roni, this comments is really more a question about advice for running in snow/ice. I’m from southern california but go to school in new england. i was always a runner while in california but find that I’m afraid to run outdoors in new england during the winter (more specifically I’m in providence – a city that fails to shovel/salt its sidewalks and none of my cohort mates are runners otherwise i’d hound them for advice, too!). will i slip and fall and hit my head and die? (yes, rather extreme) i also stay away from the gym since as a grad student I’m loathed to run into any of the students i teach. so, do you use yak traks? just brave it? any advice on how to conquer running in these wintery conditions? (i also realize you’re super busy so if you aren’t able to respond to this, no worries!) thanks!

      I just brave it. The sidewalks are never cleared in my community so I run on the quiet streets. I should note I only go about a mile, because anything longer would bring me on roads that are too busy. But hey.. anything is better than nothing! :)
