One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

I Showed this Video to my 8-Year-Old Son…

I realize it’s 3 years old and I’m probably the last person to see it, but I just discovered the video and it’s a great example of how much manipulation can go into media images.

I decided to show it to my 8-year-old son today.

Little boys are now growing up with the same pressures as little girls with distorted images of the human body. They also constantly see photos of “perfect” women who don’t exist and, at best, are shown as objects, not fellow human beings.

His reaction was priceless.

With eyes wide and mouth open he said, and I quote…  “Mind blown.”

We’ve had the you-never-trust-commercials conversation, many, many times so we chatted about that again and then he went back to playing on the computer.

I can only hope he filed it away in that overactive brain of his.

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

However, to prevent the massive amounts of spam I was receiving I have turned off comments on any post older than 5 days old. If you'd like to leave me a note regarding this post or anything really try me on twitter (@RoniNoone,) my Facebook page, or even IG (@RoniNoone) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I never thought I'd have to do this but it's gotten way out of hand and comment management has become simply too time consuming to manage.

It’s pretty amazing to see the work that gets done on the best of the best (in terms of looks, that is). I just hope that people realize that it’s not about trying to be better than somebody else, it’s about being the best that you can be. Whether we’re talking about physically or anything else for that matter!

My little nieces are 5 and 8 years at the moment and I think I need to show them this video one day. They need something to shield them against the media culture that constantly touts “body perfection”.

I’ve never seen that, and I agree with your son’s reaction, “mind blown!” And, AND, I studied rhetoric, and very consciously focused my studies on all the way communications are manipulative. Just wow. Thanks SO much for sharing this!

I hadn’t seen that either. That is crazy! No wonder so many of us have body issues…

Wow, I love your son’s reaction lol. You’re right, boys and girls pick up on these things for sure. I think it’s great that you talk about this and showed your son this at a young age. He’s probably going to grow up to be a good man :)

My 8 yr old said she looks “like a Barbie, that’s weird and wrong”. (also check the first comment…spam?)
