I hopped on the scale this morning with my eyes closed.

After a weekend of way too much chocolate and overindulgence, I’ve been having a hard time getting into the groove again. I even abandoned my food journaling last night, just not wanting to deal with it.

This is when it’s easy to just walk away, but I also think, this is when getting on the scale is the most important. You may not like what you see or you may be pleasantly surprised, but either way you are being accountable and that’s a huge key to successful weight loss.

This morning, on the scale with my eyes closed, I waited 20 seconds, peeked with one eye, and saw…

20130403_weighin

Up a little from last week but not the massive gain I was excepting.

I’m reminded yet again:

It’s about what I do consistently –NOT occasionally– that matters.

And I find that comforting. Sometimes I want to eat chocolate with abandon. I’m sorry, I just do.

OK, enough about me. How was your week?

Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to reply to last week’s comments. I’m sorry. I did read them! The week just flew by between the holiday and The 7-Year-Old’s Spring Break Staycation. It’s like time is in fast-forward mode.

i’m up a bit, but considering i just got back from the “ARUBA trip of a lifetime”, i will take it. also, considering i came back and got on the scale sunday and it showed an 8!! lb difference from the last time i weighed myself…1.2 lbs today is a present. its amazing how the body will bounce back once it’s back to it’s regular environment…not so easy to come back to the environment and get out of the vacay mode, but boy does it feel better to have structure!

a few things i learned while i was gone besides the food in ARUBA is sooo expensive…
it’s really difficult to get my 3 liters of water in a day when i’m out of my norm.
it’s really difficult to get in enough fruits and veggies in a vacation/hotel situation…the serving sizes aren’t near enough.
the exercising was easy to get in…the fitness room was amazing, swimming in the pool, walking on the beach and taking the stairs to my 9th floor suite were easy adjuncts.
happy hour was really fun but probably not the best way to try and maintain weight…but hey i’m not going to aruba and not having a pina colada!
i did make better choices than i usually make when i’m on vacation which made me feel more in control…i think mfp had something to do with that.
i felt like i was having my cake and eating it too most of the time…which was a good compromising feeling…instead of “i’ve done so much damage i may as well just throw in the towel”.

hopefully by next week the 1.2 lbs will be history!

    • RoniNoone

Nice job!! You totally ROCKED vacation!

I just realized I never posted my weight last week. I looked back at my tracker and I discovered that I was exactly the same as I am this week. This is great considering I enjoyed Easter brunch and a few treats over the holiday weekend. I’m really getting a hang of this maintenance piece of weight loss even though I haven’t reached goal yet. I’m rolling with it at this point. Maintenance is difficult, possibly even more difficult than actively losing weight. I’m still working on changing things up in my life. I ran up a local mountain yesterday to add a little spice to my usual run. It felt amazing. The bottom line is that I’m never going back to where I started. I don’t ever want to feel that way again. However, Roni, I feel exactly like you do and sometimes I just want to eat peanut butter out of the jar without a measuring spoon!

    • RoniNoone

I think it’s great you are already mastering maintenance and I agree… in a weird way it is harder.

I have started tracking again because my schedule has been totally off recent,y and i found the scale moving up. I know that tracking works for me so I’m headed back to my comfort zone but this time on MFP because I just couldn’t pay more to WW when I am so close. I am loving MFP so far but I do have a question about the sugar goal. Do people actually stay below that?! I have a bit of a sweet tooth that I have been trying to move beyond and I’ve been doing great this week with only 5-10g of sugar per day coming from candy. Fruit is killing me though with regard to the sugar goal. Help!!

    • Eth

I usually have at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and am always above the sugar goal on MFP, even if I don’t eat any sugary foods. I decided that for myself, I’m going to subtract the sugar from fruit from my totals.

    • RoniNoone

Nope never. Not once have I been below and it is normally only fruit that puts me over. I also almost always over on protein too.

losing about half pound a week when I really track and workout. Slowly and surely the turtle wins the race.

    • RoniNoone

    • Peggy

Ange, You are right about the turtle and the 1/2 pound per week. And that’s awesome that you’re just plodding along.Plodding along is a big accomplishment. The hardest part is making the effort at every meal, and it sounds like you do that.

Eh can’t fret that I’m not losing like I was earlier this year. Not running as much but still taking the barre class 2-3 times a week and running about 2 times a week. This past weekend I was visiting friends and there was zero exercise and a little indulgence on food/adult bvg intake but not horrible. The scale can NOT be my only measurement though. My clothes are fitting so much better and I purchased a pair of shorts for my upcoming trip to the British Virgin Islands and yea I got to purchase a size 8!!!! I haven’t seen that size since 2006. My highest was a size 12. Felt great!!!

    • RoniNoone

You are (as you often are!) bang on with your message this week. It is about what I do consistently – not occasionally – that matters. That might just be my maintenance mantra. This is my first time ‘weighing in’ since I hit goal about a month ago, although I periodically step on the scale for my own interest. Perhaps I will go back to weekly weigh-ins, perhaps I’ll do it monthly. More importantly is what I’m doing consistently – healthy eating, moving, tracking, drinking water. I’m okay if I’m up a couple or down a couple – as long as I’m in the maintenance range. I look forward to reading about everyone’s weeks and love the sharing and support with the weekly weigh in.

    • RoniNoone

You are totally rocking it! Great job maintaining!

  • Reen

I had to laugh when I read this above, “Sometimes I want to eat chocolate with abandon. I’m sorry, I just do.” That is so totally me, except I would change it to say, “And I find that comforting. Sometimes I want to eat…with abandon. I’m sorry, I just do.” Once in a while, for a day or sometimes two, I just want [and do] eat whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want. So far, I have been lucky enough to be able to reel myself back in before I get too out of control, but it has definitely at times sabotaged my entire week. But like you, I get on the scale [with eyes closed], accept whatever the numer is, and move on, start tracking, start making smart choices again, and get back on track.

You always have such wonderful things to say on your blog. I LOVE reading you. :)

    • RoniNoone

I feel the same way. There are times I just don’t want to think about anything and eat whatever and I do and then I go back to tracking. I think that actually helps keep me sane. :)

I am not on my period this week so I am down, but not back to the 159 that I was before easter and my period. I am annoyed with this but I also know that those easter chocolates had something to do with it :) I have been on track with my running. Did a very hard run on Saturday so I am happy about that. Now it is time to focus and get back in the 150′s……. I am tired of sitting in the low 160′s

    Wish me luck!

Shocked honestly at the drop this week. It hasn’t been a great week. Lots of stress, not enough activity and several mindless trips to the pantry were involved. Anyway, it’s the same old story…I’ve gained and lost the same four pounds over and over since Christmas. Ugh.

    • RoniNoone

Keep trucking, You’re still maintaining a 17 lbs loss! That’s pretty awesome!

  • Kaki Bennett

Yesterday, I DID eat chocolate with abandon. I didn’t even count all the bite-sized snickers I ate. I had a horrible, stressful day and ate away my feelings with food. The good thing is I ate a bunch, and then I was over it. I had a really healthy dinner, and have been back on track today. I heard someone say, “just because you drop one egg, doesn’t mean you throw the other 11 on the floor.” I liked that! I’m looking for progress, not perfection.

This is MAINTENANCE :-) This is LIVING!!!

Not tracking but paying attention is working better than I ever imagined. I KNOW that tracking works for weight loss and thus for maintenance – but I’ll be honest it’s nice NOT having to write it all down, as easy as it is with WW Lifetime free eTools :-) So I am experimenting with eating what I know works – pretty much same as weight loss mode with a little mellowness & flexibility thrown in…I know what appropriate portions are now & how many grams of chocolate are no big deal & I eat them all the time! So as long as I stay in my 150-153 range – it feels fine. If I push back up to 155 (I’m a daily weigher for the most part – don’t want to wait a week to get the info – prefer more regular reality checks!) – then it’s back to tracking for me! We’ll see how it goes :-)

    • RoniNoone

Sounds like you are rocking it!

Consistency does matter on everything you do. A little deviation from the work won’t hamper it. It’s good to hear that you still maintain the weight after so much work.

I was REALLY hoping for a loss this week, I had a really great week on the food & exercise, but I still show a .6lb gain. GGGRRRRR!!!! This is always really hard for me because, what was the point??? :( I’m going to try & hang in there & not make any big changes. I’ll be doing a full trail marathon on Saturday, 4/13/13 so now is not the time to do anything drastic. Hopefully the scale will be more kind next week & I’ll keep up on my training, because that’s what a runner does. RIGHT??!!???

So the weigh in on Wednesday freaked me out! I know I ate a lot of chocolate/candy this weekend but I never thought I would see a 3.4 gain. So, I went on with my day…I ate breakfast then went for a 30 minute walk/jog and drank water. And before my shower I went on the scale to satisfy my curiosity and I weighed in at 146.6 lbs which was better than the first number. I just have to keep going even though the number may slap me in the face. In the end it is a number! And yes Roni, I do to eat chocolate with abandon as well and what you said resonates with me. “It’s about what I do consistently – not occasionally- that matters.” Thanks again for sharing with us and having this place to share with others about what we are going through!

Wow it only took me 5 days to get in here–I don’t know why it is so hard.
I ate chocolate and the scale showed it. It is Spring Break and I have had four different lunches with friends and I didn’t count the points but school starts tomorrow and I have my bag of fruit and veggies packed and ready to go–just hope I don’t forget to take them.
Hope everyone is now experiencing the nice weather like I am–it is great for walking outside but I think my legs need some practice until they are back into the routine.
