The scale surprised me this morning. I’m down a pound since the Wednesday Weigh in before Italy!

I must admit I’m a bit shocked, but when I really sit down and think about it, makes total sense.

Not because I ate more while walking my butt off, although I’m sure that didn’t hurt, but because when I came home I slipped right back into my healthy eating lifestyle.

I firmly believe it’s not the vacation that sabotages you, it’s the mindset that you are no longer “on plan” when you get back because you “ruined” your diet. It’s this feeling of guilt that perpetrates poor choices when you get home. It’s the lack of understanding that diets are stateless. Everything I ate in Italy was on plan in my mind. I didn’t come home with any feelings of regret, guilt, shame or disgust with myself.

That is the power of Stateless Dieting. I wrote about this concept almost 5 years ago (Holy CRAP!) and I still believe it’s one of the big milestones to overcome the diet mentality and break yo-you diet cycles (Click here to read my original post.)

Anyway, your turn. How was your week? How’s the DietBet going? We have 7 days left! I’m not sure I’m going to make my goal (I have 3.9 lbs to go) but I’m having fun trying!

  • Amy

Congratulations on your awesome weigh in! Your post was very appropriate for me this morning. I’m beating myself up over a poor weigh in because I did exactly what you said: I had an “off plan” week. I made bad choices, felt guilty about them, made more bad ones on top of that, and the whole week was a downward spiral. As a result, I gained 2.4 lbs. At home. And I didn’t even get to have gelato!

I’m going to get back on the wagon today, of course. Thank you for your inspiring post to help me get my proper mindset back!

My weight stayed the same, which is a surprise because my mom was in the hospital and I didn’t make it to the gym except for one day last week.
So far this week I have worked out with my trainer on Monday and worked out at the gym on my own yesterday. My goal for this week is to get back on a regular workout routine. I am sore already from the last 2 days of working out but I am not going to let that stop me….no pain ….no gain!

way to stay on track on your vacay! i know when i spent my weeks in italy i couldn’t believe how much exercise i got just walking around. every calorie i ate got used…the walking was intense.

this is a deja voo from last week. i’m still working on those last 5 lbs. i really was hoping to reach my personal goal during the dietbet challenge, but i’m happy just undoing the damage from the holidays (which was bad!) and making their goal.

this weather has really put a damper on exercise…too cold for skiing with the wind chills below 0. although, i did take my first snowboarding lesson before the freeze and loved it! i was a sweaty, sweaty pig when it was over because it was a falling frenzy all afternoon!

Oh how I wish I could blame this on PMS (which did exist) but in reality I just ate like crap last week. But I resisted the urge to not weigh in at all and I’m back to eating in a way that makes me feel better all around.

I’m actually surprised it wasn’t more! I didn’t weigh in last week – my mom was in the hospital starting Tues night and just got out yesterday. I mostly ate crap from the hospital cafeteria all week plus no workouts. I’ll take it.

So close to goal!! I refuse to let the last 3 lbs get the best of me, just focusing on living well and health. I am up to a run/walk interval of 3:2 at 45 minutes and am thinking I might be ready for a 5K soon :)

Have a great week everyone and welcome home Roni!

  • Lauren Palmer

I’m down 9.4 since starting the DietBet, Roni! So excited. I realize some of it was post-holiday bloat, but I’m still pumped. It really has kept me more accountable. I have been working out consistently and feel stronger and more energetic than I have in months.

  • Dukebdc

You’re so right that the “I’ve ruined everything so why bother” mindset after a vacation/indulgent week can be difficult to get over. All I keep going back to is that eating well and moving more can only help, while overeating can only hurt, regardless of what the scale says on any particular day.

Basically maintaining since right after Christmas, which is fine with me. Still working on getting enough water in, and exercise is still a problem–once I got out of the habit it has been really difficult to make the time. The time is there, of course, I just don’t prioritize exercise anymore. Need to change my attitude about that!

Welcome back–can’t wait to follow you next trip.
Last week I was up 9 pds and this week I am down 9.2. ( -.2).
The fluid in my body is a bit out of control.
Have no idea what it will be this Saturday when I weigh-in at WW–I have a sinus infection so this should be interesting.

Loved all your italy posts! Thanks for sharing your vacation. Now I am thinking Italy just might be a trip for the fall. I love traveling! Next month it is the Carribean. I am beyond thrilled with my weigh in. Actually on Sunday I weighed 161.8 and you would have thought I won the lottery! I was so pumped!! The real reason for the success is EXERCISE. I wanted to hit my GW by my birthday in mid-Feb, don’t think that will happen but I set a new goal to at least be 155. I CAN DO IT! Oh and I have convinced two ppl here at work to walk with me during lunch. Today is day one. :)

I loved hearing about your trip to Italy and it’s helped my husband and I buckle down to save for our trip to Italy in a few years.

I’m not part of this Diet Bet, I didn’t see it until it was too late, but I am in another one with 26 of my friends. I have 15 days to go and 3.5 more pounds to lose and I’m confident I will get there. My husband has started jogging with me (I’m doing C25K), not that he needs to, but I need someone there with me to motivate me. I had my best in ages last night thanks to him.

This stateless dieting is perfect! I had been doing the low-carb thing since the beginning of the year and while it made me feel great, the weight loss was a lot slower than I expected so I gave it up 2 days ago, in part because it’s too hard to make meals for myself and then for the kids. So yesterday I was just eating more consciously and expected a gain but I was actually down. YAY!

Welcome home! I am happy you enjoyed your trip and ate all the amazing food it had to offer without feeling guilty. I agree with you about the mindset and getting back on track when you get home. I didn’t lose this week but I have lost 7 pounds in the last two weeks so I am ok with that. I did run a 10km and 5 km this week after being sick so I am happy to get back on track and push myself. Hope to see a loss next week, but for now I am happy to be running again and not sick.

New scale = New weight. Up 1 from the scale change. I’m excited about my new scale…it breaks down weight from muscle to water, etc.!!!
I’ve been doing MyFitnessPal for the past couple of months and things really are not adding up. The only way I seem to lose weight is when I do low carb and/or exercise.

I admit that I weigh in more than once a week when I am trying to get back to my happy weight. That said, you ever have one of those weigh-ins that is totally out of family with the rest of the week? That was todays. I have been between 146.8 and 147.3 this week- so I was very surprised to see 146.3 on the scale this morning. We’ll see if it sticks. Next week might be a smaller loss (ok with me!).
My NSV for the past month is a big one for me- this is the first time EVER that I have consistently lost weight without doing any sort of written tracking/calculating/etc. I feel like I have developed enough of an awareness of food that I don’t get caught in the “What do you mean that tiny muffin is 700 calories?!” trap and I can’t really lie to myself about how much snacking I am doing (snacking is my biggest issue- my meals are healthy, it’s the in-between eating that packs on the lbs for me). So, happy with myself!

The lack of loss is easy to explain: no excercise and too many carbs. I weigh every day and I did see a number below 220 this week. I`d like to see it again!
I`m off to read your post about stateless dieting.

After the stomach flu last night, I knew I’d see a big loss this morning. I’m just hoping that some of that was “real” weight and I don’t gain it all back next week! That is definitely not my preferred weight loss method. Other than that, I had a decent week. I hit the gym pretty hard for some weight sessions and made it to 14+ miles of running. I was able to make it outside in the ice cold (19-27*) for two of my runs. One was 5k, which I managed to finish in under 30 min (a first or me, unless doing speedwork on the treadmill) and my long run, which was 7 miles and averaged a 10:08 pace, a good 35sec/mile faster than in the fall! I run so much faster and easier outside, so it was nice to make it out, despite the cold and snow. It was also nice to see that my hours on the treadmill the past few months are paying off.
I’m glad to see you had such a great time in Italy. What a wonderful time to spend with you mom! It was fun living vicariously through you :).

sure there’s a lot of water retention in that number as I have eaten so
much salt laden crap in the last couple of days. That’s what I get for
depriving myself of sleep and being exhausted when I make food choices.
Sigh. Oh well, today is a new day, I slept a full 8 last night and

NSV for me this week – I’ve been using the ladies room one floor up so I get some extra walking in each time.

I DID IT! You guys I’ve lost 50#’s in the last year! Now granted I have a loonngg way to go but when I started on this journey last year I knew it would take me at least 3 years to accomplish my goal weight. I have lost this much before and quicker but alas I found it (or it found me?) again. I am doing the DietBet but as slowly as I am losing I don’t see over 4 pounds in 7 days however my body does strange things sometimes.

Roni, thank you, thank you, thank you! for being here. You and your blog are my lifeline for encouragement!!!!

Feeling so BAD about the gain, I only it’s only .06 lbs, but I was sure I was going to have a good loss this week, as i’ve had a really great week. I am @ the end of my “cycle” so maybe that has something to do with it??
Trying to not let this derail me, but I have already talked to the hubby & i’m blowing off my workout tonight so we can go out to dinner. :( Not planning on going crazy, just having a relaxing evening with the husband.
Keeping my fingers crossed that my loss for this week will show up in the next couple of days.

I am here but not weighing in. I do not want to miss a weigh in. I have been running and it makes me so happy and at peace, but then out of no where I am injured and taking a week off. This has sent me in to a tailspin of emotions. All the negative thoughts are whirling in my head and and food in my mouth. I need to take a breathe and get myself together.

    • beth

I’ve had to take some time from running as well, it’s so frustrating. I kinda “stopped caring” for the first few days and ate whatever I wanted (healthy or not). Good luck, and I hope you recover quickly!

I’m up 3 lbs from last week, I’ve been doing the whole late night snacking thing to keep myself up so I can finish studying my school work for the next day. So I know why I’m up now I’ve just got to stop mindlessly snacking.

Although I’ve been weighing in every week, I’ve neglected posting and I really want to get back to it. This week I weighed in at 192 which is the same as last week and two pounds from my diet bet goal. 2 pounds in a few days isn’t unreasonable and I really want to hit that goal on the final weighin day. I made weight watchers vegetable soup today, bought and cut lots of fresh fruit, and even grilled chicken to use for the week. I’m all set for a great week…a hoping to hit that goal!!!!

Congrats everyone for the last week!

Mine is a little boring. I was a little more lax with my food than usual but trying hard to stick with Paleo eating. It’s working wonders for the rest of my body/mind now I have upped my fat and protein, gotten rid of wheat/gluten/carbs not from fruit and veges and stopped counting calories! That’s probably been the hardest part, letting go of my useless security blanket of calorie counting.
