So tomorrow ends my New Year’s Diet Bet. I hosted a 4 week challenge to lose 4% of our body weight in 4 weeks. Those who accepted put up $20 and everyone who reaches the goal splits the pot. We ended up with 655 players and a $13,100 pot. As of tonight the group has lost over 3,553 lbs.

That’s INSANITY!

In an awesome way, of course.

There’s only one teeny tiny problem.

I didn’t reach MY goal.

That’s right.

Unsuccessful.

Didn’t happen.

I….

FAILED!

dun dun dun

I kid, of course. It’s not really bugging me that much.

Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It’s OK to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing. -H. Stanley Judd

I kind of knew it would happen when I got home form Italy. I still had 4 lbs to lose and only 7 days to do it. I guess I could have starved myself just to reach that number but I don’t crash diet. Not anymore. After 15 years in the yo-yo diet cycle of hell, I’ve learned my lesson.

What is the lesson?

I mush on, making one decision at a time, continuing to making forward progression because there is no going back.

I don’t want to go back.

And there’s no way I’m going to let some stupid number on some stupid scale convince me otherwise.

Because really…

at the end of the day…

it’s SO much more than what the scale says.

It’s about working together, with you, to live a little more consciously, a little healthier, and a little more active. Lowering the number on the scale is great, don’t get me wrong, it’s the reason why so many of us start, but it can’t be our only measure of success. It’s NOT our only measure of success. I may not have reached my goal but many of you did and together we lost over 3,500 lbs. We helped keep each other going, motivated, and inspired. Oh! And we raised $655 for the Hurricane Sandy Jersey Relief Fund!

Not bad for “failing” if you asked me!

So I’m ready to try again and I hope you’ll join me. I’ll be hosting Roni’s Diet Bet 2, another four week challenge, from February 1st to February 28th.

To join the challenge, players each add $20 to the pot, which is divided up among the “winners” at the end of the game. DietBet doesn’t work like The Biggest Loser, it’s not winner-take-all. Instead, everyone who loses at least 4% of their starting weight will get an equal share of the pot. DietBet supplies “referees” to verify weights using a photo-based weigh-in process.

The pot breaks down like this…

  • 85% of the total is divided among all the winners
  • 5% goes to DietBet for management, credit card fees, etc.
  • 10% goes to me for hosting the game. Half of which I will be donating to The Alliance for a Healthier Generation

If you’d like to join me for another round, sign up here.

Official stats from our first challenge will be verified on Friday, and if you won the last bet your last weigh in will double as your first weigh in for this new challenge.

This is how I mush on. I hope you’ll join me.

I forgot to weigh in this morning and there was NO way I was gonna weigh in after my breakfast. Lol. I did weigh in Sunday and I had 1.4 lbs to go. So I am sure that I didn’t make my goal. BUT….I am at least 6 lbs lighter than I was at the beginning if he month! Yea! I feel like a winner because I have been consistent with sticking with my plan, tracking every bite, and making better choices for FOUR WEEKS! Can you believe that?

That you so much Roni for starting this and I will be in on the 1st !!!

I actually knew when I signed up I wouldn’t *win*. The 4% for me would not be a healthy loss and I am on the slow and steady right now. I am going to pass on the next one but follow unofficially with a 3% target – for myself.

  • Tara S

Hmmm, I have never really done something like this before so why not? Count me in! Will be on holidays until the 11th but hopefully this will help keep me accountable and mindful of what I’m putting in my mouth! And at least I’m going to Iceland ;o) Less of a foodie heaven! 4% = 6lbs to be gone by the 28th February? Bring it on!!! :D

  • Shannon Lavery

I signed up and decided not to do it because I was afraid it would put me into crazy diet mode. It is so exciting that so many people did so well. That is an amazing amount of pounds, participants and $. Success no matter how you look at it!

  • Connie P

I just did my final for the NY Diet Bet (didn’t make my goal) but also registered for the Feb Diet Bet! I didn’t win but I did loose 4 lbs, so I’ll take that!

  • nancyabc

I love how you think and you will feel a lot better at the end of this year than those of us that worried about that number on the scale–stress is really bad for your health. Have a great day!

  • Elizabeth Davis

I did a different diet bet and yesterday met the 4%…ate no different and then today when I got to take the picture, I’m up two pounds. I am so very upset. But, then I wonder, what is wrong with me that I’m so hung up on this scale? I don’t know if this is healthy.

  • Bruna

    Hi Roni!

I am from Brazil, but I would love to participate on the bed.. Do you know if that’s possible? XOXO

  • Laura

Mushing on here as well! I didn’t quite reach my goal yet (.7 pounds to go) and I’m not sure I’ll lose that in a day but I had a great time losing weight in such a motivating environment! I am thinking of signing up again but I’m not sure. Another 4% will be HARD.

Honestly, while you didn’t meet your 4%, I wouldn’t use the word “fail.” You maintained you weight when visiting another freaking country! For most people that would be a colossal achievement in itself.

Your blog has been inspiring for me and and your constant honesty has helped me own up to some things Ive been struggling with. I finally got motivated to start my own blog and just decided to do a post on how Im going to “break up with my body.” Thanks for all the motivation!

  • Dukebdc

I like your attitude. These challenges are supposed to be motivating–just like your weekly weigh-ins. Although “winning” and getting a part of the pot would be awesome, progress is really the main goal for participating. Mindfulness of what you consume and how active you are is never a bad thing, and should not be cause to beat yourself up. Knowledge is power in the weight loss battle!

I’ll keep up with the Wednesday weigh-ins, but I’m trying out maintenance now so won’t be paying into the new DietBet.

  • imacrazymomof4

i’m so happy that you set the dietbet challenge up. it was a great way to start off 2013 and lose those holiday pounds. i made my goal and i’m thrilled, but i’m also happy and relieved that it’s finally over. i was starting to feel alittle annoyed…i’m not sure i can put my finger on it as to why i was annoyed or what i was annoyed with lol. maybe it was just that the scale wasn’t moving anymore, or i felt hyperfocused on the end? i’m going to sit the next one out primarily because i’m not sure losing another 4% is in my best interest when i’m only a smidge away from my personal goal…2%. if you’re still doing this in april, i’ll sign up then…that will be after my ARUBA vacation!!! and i’m sure i’ll need to regroup a bit. BEST OF LUCK to those to sign up again and great job to everyone who lost!!!

Go back and read your Note to Self from Jan. 15. I’d say you are a big winner in that you’ve let food take a healthy place in your life so far this year. Maybe you didn’t lose your 4%, but when else will you get to “Enjoy life, eat well, laugh often, move much” like you did in Italy? Sure, maybe you would have come back even lighter than you did, but do you regret even one of those tastes you experienced? TOTALLY WORTH IT

I love this post, and I love your approach to the concept of failure. I’ve always said if you’re going to fail, fail big and fail often, because it’s a sure sign that you’re TRYING. I didn’t participate in the January bet, but I just signed up for February!

  • debraroby

I don’t think I will meet my goal either. Still a couple days to go, and I game-play it (dehydrate) – but to what end?

  • http://twitter.com/fakeginger amanda

Just signed up! I’m excited to participate. My husband came home from Afghanistan in December and I’ve gained about 10 pounds of “happy” weight. It’s time to let go of it!

  • http://twitter.com/thiiirdly Chris

this little failure pales in light of your obvious overall success

  • Cindy

Thanks, Roni. I got a little teary eyed reading this because I am just a little disappointed that I didn’t quite make it. I was only 1.5 lbs away as of yesterday and I’m sure we all know that all I had to do was starve today and then do a double spin class to weigh in and ‘win’. But I’m not at that point anymore in my journey either. I did great. I lost 6 lbs and I’m happy about that. I think I just needed a little affirmation from someone else. And I’m in for the 2nd round! Doing this with so many people really made me feel like part of a team and I’m proud of that – and for everyone who did make the cut!

  • Evelyn

A little scared when I calculated my 4% but I am signed on to the DietBet and motivated and looking forward to giving and receiving the wonderful support and being part of a community :)

  • ItsMeVsMe

I didn’t reach my personal goal either, and I have the exact same attitude. Isn’t it refreshing to be in that place finally??

  • http://scrapsofmygeeklife.com scrappinmichele

I missed it by 1 frigging pound and 2 days ago I was down 1lb, but when I went to do my final which in I didn’t make it. I’m trying to not let it get me down, but it’s hard!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mom2Ways Julie Long Donahue

I just recently heard of Diet Bet. Sounds like a great concept. But my 4% would be 12 pounds. And my first month of working really hard “only” netted 8.5 pounds. I’m not sure if I can do 3 pounds a week. But I’ll probably join one soon.

  • A Reeves

Omigosh, I can’t believe I just signed up! I have to lose 9 pounds! Nine freaking pounds in 28 days. But sometimes it’s not about the goal, but the journey. Thanks Roni!
