Stepping up the Wednesday Weigh Ins with DietBet

36 Comments 4156 views

Let me start by saying the last 2 days have. been. awesome. Let’s ignore the fact I’ve lived off chocolate, cheese and holiday cookies for a minute. I spend 2, actually no, 4 days just enjoying the company of my boys. This video pretty much captures the essence of our Christmas.

Of course we also had the traditional set up.

Some computer time.

Story Time.

Even a Christmas Eve dusting of snow. (Someones first.)

I didn’t want to worry about what I was eating, how much, when I would work out, how I looked etc. etc. etc. I just wanted to, well, be. And it was great! But now I’m feeling blah and bloated and, well, bad.

I’ve decided not to compound these feelings by weighing in today. I have no doubt it will show a gain, and I’m ok with it. I’ve just decided to move on and I’m excited to announce a fun twist to our weekly Wednesday Weigh Ins starting in the New Year.

For four weeks, from Wednesday, January 2nd to Tuesday, January 29th, I’m partnering with DietBet to create A New Year’s Wednesday Weigh In Challenge!

To join the challenge, players each add $20 to the pot, which is divided up among the “winners” at the end of the game. DietBet doesn’t work like The Biggest Loser, it’s not winner-take-all. Instead, everyone who loses at least 4% of their starting weight will get an equal share of the pot. DietBet supplies “referees” to verify weights using a photo-based weigh-in process.

If we can get 100 people, which is my goal, that’s a $2,000 pot!

The pot breaks down like this…

  • 85% of the total is divided among all the winners

  • 5% goes to DietBet for management, credit card fees, etc.
  • 10% goes to me for hosting the game. Half of which I will be donating to the Hurricane Sandy Jersey Relief Fund

If you’re up for a friendly New Year’s Challenge to kick start 2013, sign up here.

I’m looking forward to this fun twist on our Wednesday Weigh Ins.

Please Note: You can join the challenge and still keep you weight hidden to the public. I’ll also be continuing the Wednesday Weigh Ins here on the site, DietBet is just a fun way to up the anti for those that want to participate. Don’t feel pressure to join unless you want to. If you have more questions about how DietBet works specifically, click here to see the full FAQs.

I’m super excited about this and think we’ll have a blast. I tried to keep the stakes low enough to allow most people to enter but still high enough to give us a fun pot size. Based on the popularity and success of this challenge, I’m totally into hosting a few more if you want to keep going.

OK, I’m gonna run. It’s time to hang out with Grandma! Feel free to “weigh in” below, numbers or no numbers. I’d love to hear how you did this week!

Had a great holiday weekend spent with some family. Husband finally back home from his 2+ wk Europe work travel. It was a quiet and lazy Christmas and we even got snow here in TEXAS!! Go figure! A white Christmas in Texas! It was fun!

The scale this morning was scary but also today was trash day so a lot of goodies went out in the trash. I am probably going out to dinner with my hubby Saturday night and we usually have a big meal New Year’s Eve, but other than that, the endless eating is done of the holidays! I will go to my meeting on Saturday as planned, no matter what the scale says, and move on.

I am excited to do the challenge!

no weigh in for me….i haven’t been loggin in to weigh in because, since we are full time travelers, my internet has not been very good….but i’m losing :) Yesterday and today was a junk food fest and I’m not worrying about it…just calling it done today and getting back to normal! This challenge sounds like fun, but since my internet is sketchy I won’t be doing this one…but I’ll probly do the next one! Merry Christmas!

I pretty much stayed with calorie counting except for one day. It was easy as I was a homebody and we kept junk out of the house.

Woo hoo, I whipped the scale creep’s butt this week! We are snowed in with about 13″ on the ground, so there will be a good shoveling workout once it stops coming down. I have kids home with me, and am having fun feeding them, but there’s not a lot of junk in the house. Hopefully they’ll be able to get out on their nostalgia circuit around town and get their junk fix!

Huge kudos to those who report in today! I am showing a gain of 1.4 pounds, which doesn’t make me especially happy, but I know why it happened and don’t really regret it. I had a big cup of egg nog Christmas Eve, which could almost account for the entire gain (not to say other goodies didn’t play a role!).;) I am heading to see my parents today, and they don’t keep a lot of junk food in the house, and have always been relatively healthy eaters, so I need to keep an eye on portions and activity, and should be fine. Famous last words, huh?

Since I’m in my maintenance range, I’ll pass on the DietBet challenge, but wish everyone luck!

i am thrilled to post today!!! i went into the week knowing that really there is no other week of the year quite like the week between Christmas and New Years. It’s a week like no other. i expected to gain and did but seriously .4? YAA HOO!!! makes me so happy to know that the things that i have been striving to make a lifestyle are just that…my lifestyle. i didn’t get to exercise at all due to kids parties at school, last minute shopping, doctors appts., some major calf pain from TRX…and i felt badly about it. BUT i didn’t use it as an excuse to screw up more. i continued to drink 3L of water a day, eat every 2-4 hours, plank 3 min/day, eat 5 servings of fruits/veggies a day. i did eat things that i don’t usually eat, i ate cookies, i drank wine and beer, but it was all in moderation and not off the deep end. i actually felt like because i wasn’t exercising i was really throwing in the towel, but i’m so relieved that i gained such a miniscule amount!!

a NSV that occurred…i bought clothes at talbots 4 months ago at the beginning of the fall season. i finally had a reason to put them on only to realize that they were TOO big. i looked like i was wearing my older sisters clothes. i had to send them all back for smaller sizes. if you would have told me when i bought them i was going to lose 20 lbs in the next 4 months i would have looked at you like you were crazy and said ‘yeah right’. i feel very empowered for 2013!!!

      Jessica

That is awesome!! Congrats on the loss! And your NSV is great!

Wooooohoooooo!!!!! Finally out of the funk! I lost 2 pounds, DURING CHRISTMAS!!! What?! Who am I?! LOL I stayed under my calories on myfitnesspal all week, ate very little processed food, and cooked more. My biggest secret, and something I just discovered? TEA!!!! I’ve been drinking 5-6 cups of green tea/chamomile/other all day instead of snacking or coffee….I love the warm comforting drink and it keeps me fuller and more satisfied. Where has tea been all my life?!

This is my first Wed. weigh in, so sorry if this is info overload- just trying to record where I’m starting:
I had worked over the summer at managing my eating and was at my GW in mid-August. In September my husband’s cancer came back (he had had a stem cell transplant in January, 2012) and I spent the next 3 months eating (’cause that will make it all better, right?). Just before Thanksgiving, got things back on track and lost a few lbs…then fell off the wagon again (I blamed it on the holidays and the stresses of my husband’s treatments) and am back where I was at the beginning of the summer. I need to find a way to not turn to food when I am sad/mad/happy/etc, though, because my life it too topsy turvy to leave my health (and, I admit, my ego- I like being at GW) to the whims of my emotional eating. I think the crappy eating has also been a contributing factor in my poor sleep too (I go to bed with enough time for 8 hours of sleep, but I wake up several times a night- leaves me feeling exhausted all the time)…which starts a nasty circle of feeling blah, then eating to try to feel better.
    So, back on track.

I want going to get on the scale this morning, but did anyway. It showed a small gain, which I’m not surprised with…actually I’m surprised its not larger! After a tub ov movie popcorn at The Hobbit last night, apple pie, tons of cookie and candies, two nights of prime rib and mashed potatoes… I’m back to tracking points. I had a great holiday, but I’m back to the real world. I’m headed to the gym as soon as my daughter is done eating…90min of cardio, here I come!

Happy with the big loss from last week but think sickness may be contributing. Have been making very conscientious food choices this week despite the Holidays-hoping to maintain the positive momentum! Perhaps DietBet will be the push needed to get to goal!

I too enjoyed wayyy too much candy and cookies yesterday. It’s good to have a holiday, just important to remember to get back on track now that the holiday is over.

Your boys running into the couch = adorable. Looks like such a happy family time, which is what Christmas should be.

I’ve been “stalking” your blog for a long time, hoping your enthusiasm for fitness and a healthy, balanced life would rub off on me and help me gain the motivation to lose weight and live in the now.
After almost a year, I’ve finally had my “a-ha” moment. I’ve been feeling awful for the last week. Not just bloated and blah from holiday food, but a deep down “something is not right here” bad. I honestly think it has to do with my diet and lack of exercise.
I’ve realized that I’ve been making the decision every day to stay overweight, unhappy, and unhealthy. And….I’m done with that.

Today I made the choice to live a happier, healthier life. I thank you for providing some of the inspiration to make this decision!

Here’s my weigh in from yesterday (Wednesday in Tokyo Standard Time). I’m a day ahead of you since I live in Japan. :)

I am still here :) Didn’t weigh in either, as I have a fair idea of what the scales will say and it’s not realistic. With all the food and the bloating, I think weighing in will be done in the new year!! :)

That competition sounds like fun :)

Hands down the best gift to myself.

Rocking the first year of weight maintenance. I do not eat my trigger foods anymore Clear mind is the BEST gift I’ve ever given myself. Lots of work, totally worth it.
Don’t wait til Jan 1. Steer clear of the trigger foods.

So HAPPY with my .06 loss during the holiday/vacation week. The holiday portion isn’t that hard for me, but the vacation portion is VERY HARD for me. We tend to eat out A LOT when we’re on vacation. Going to try & keep this momentum going for the rest of the holiday/vacation. May not weigh-in everyday, because any gain makes me want to throw in the towel right now, but i’m working hard to resist!!
So glad you’re enjoying your holidays Roni!! As always THANKS for all you do & hopefully I can post another loss next week!!! :)

I have all of my info typed in except the picture of the scale weight. Please let me know. Thanks so much! Kathy
