A Why Not? Wednesday Weigh In

WOW guys, 225 of you weighed in with me last Wednesday and I wonder how many lurkers are doing it on their own.

This. Is. AWESOME.

And SO inspiring. Have you guys looked at the comments? Just reading through and seeing everyone’s highest weight compared to their current weight made me happy. Of course we’re all in different stages of weight loss, all with different goals, different challenges and different approaches but it doesn’t matter. We’re all in this together.

So I thought I’d react to some of the comments from last week. A few stuck out for me. I’m sorry I can’t reply to everyone. Time and my simple comment functionality are pretty limited (at the moment.)

… Need to watch on the sodium, feel bloated. Why can’t I be an exercise rah rah girl?

My response: You don’t have to be. If you force it you’ll only resent is and the change will never stick. Find something that keeps you moving that you DO enjoy. And drink more water! That will help with the bloat immensly!!

This week down 2.7! I’m beyond excited to finally feel in control of my eating & exercising – could this really be it? I hope & pray it is!!!

My response: Don’t hope and pray… COMMIT! You got this!

I maintained this week. It is frustrating because I worked extra hard at the gym and ate clean all week.
I need to remember that I will not lost every week. I need to look at the whole picture. I have lost 10 pounds this summer. I am headed in the right direction in my journey. It is just going to take a little longer to get there.

My response: So many of you had such good attitudes in the weigh in but I wanted to share Sherrie’s. It’s ok to feel frustrated but taking a deep breath, acknowledging what you have accomplished, and moving on is the best approach. It’s only when you throw your hands up and walk away that you fail.

Maybe we could include age in our stats for those that wish to reveal? Roni, do you think it could provide additional incite?

My response: YES! Why not?! If people are willing to share I think that’s a great idea.

Chelsea said,

Why not focus on measurements as well though? I’m down two inches around my belly (well.. got off track a little. NOW probably one inch) from where I was a month ago. THE SCALE HAS NOT CHANGED. May be it is me, but I get so discouraged if I weigh myself weekly!!!

My Response: Then DON’T! You only know what will and will not motivate you. If the scale is too much for you face right now than feel free to post measurements. Why not?

For me, the becoming callous to the scale is what helped me get over it. Like my age, it’s only a number. I refuse to give it any more power than that. So here goes…

    Down three pounds. I am over the moon really, as that was acchieved solely by eating right. I am still very much hampered in my exercising by my broken toe, but managed a walk 2 days ago. Yesterday had a root canal treatment, so went to bed with painkillers…. Have just been cleared for exercise so this next week is going to be GOOD! I am excited!

    Can I just add that this is a HUGE milestone for me! I have been battling to get my eating right for what seems like forever!! The first few days were hell, as I cleared my system of sugar and the cravings there of.
    Now I feel in control. I feel I have choices. I feel I am making good decisions. And I DON’T feel like I am missing out on anything – because everything I am doing is making me feel soooo much better – in my skin, about me, about life. And I am doing things differently now to make them work for ME!!

    Stayed the same. It is my son’s last week of summer vacation and we have been getting in our last hurrah’s. I haven’t been making the best food choices, like ice cream and hamburgers! I will change that this week and will hopefully break my summer plateau weight.

    Well last week I was out of town and weighed in on a different scale, so acording to that I gained 2lbs on vacation. But According to my scale at home, I have lost .3lbs since the last time I weighed on it before I left. They say weigh on the same scale right? Or least that’s what I will tell myself so that I don’t jump on the negative train today about gaining while out of town Training for my forst 1/2 marathon and the miles are starting to add up so hoping that has an affect on the scale as well. :)

    First weigh in post here. I’m maintaining my WW goal weight of 150ish, but would like to get down another 5 lbs so I have more of a buffer. Boy has it been hard to lose “that last 5 lbs” everyone has talked about. NOW I know. Will keep on keepin’ on though!

    I have lost all motivation to exercise save for my bike commute. I do not know what happened to me. Over the last year everything has changed and that just isn’t a part of my life like it used to be. I think for a while I used it as a coping mechanism until I was able to get out on my own and find a good job. That said, I really really really need to focus on portion control this week. With a trip to Boston this weekend and plenty of opportunities to overeat this will be imperitive to losing weight. I hope this will help me stay focused. Lord knows I need to be.

    Down 2.2, so yay! I’m doing pretty well as far as eating right goes. I’m getting back into the habit of packing my lunch and snacks. I fail miserably when lunch time rolls around and I have to think about what I’m eating, or I need a midday snack and the vending machine is my only option. My refrigerator stays packed with fresh fruits and veggies now, so things are looking up. Now, if I can only find the perfect-for-me workout.

    Starting my Wednesday Weigh-In today. I had my third child 3 weeks ago today so Wednesdays are perfect weigh-in days. When I went into labor I was 201 lbs. When I came home from the hospital I was 190. Even though it was my 3rd child, I used the “I’m pregnant” excuse and ate a lot. The first week I lost weight pretty quickly, then stalled last week. I was sitting around 180 and kept going up a pound and down a pound. I know I just had a baby, but it was discouraging and I was eating late and night and not healthy choices.

    When I saw your post last week about others weighing in with you, I knew it was something that would motivate me to make smart choices.

    This morning I weighed in at 178.4. It’s a start and I’m hoping to be down at least 28 lbs by the end of the year. I was 150 lbs when I got pregnant.

    However, I’m only 5’3″ and my actual goal weight is 130-135. I’m hoping to be there in a year. When I had my first child (almost 6 years ago), I stumbled upon your blog and you helped motivate me to stick with Weight Watchers and I lost 30 lbs and made it down to my goal weight. Not doing WW anymore, just choosing wisely. My oldest starts kindergarten next week and my double stroller should be here today. My goal is taking my younger two kids on walks 3-4 times a week while my oldest is in school.

    I’m following everyone’s Wednesday weigh in, but not participating… Trying a new way of thinking/living right now, using hunger to eat, stopping when the hunger goes away and not letting a number on a scale make or break my day! (Following Robin Woodall’s “Weight Loss Apocalypse”- great advice for emotional eating. I will, in a few weeks, get on the scale and see how I did.     Roni, I have a secret. I’ve been ignoring my weight for the last year. I knew, of course, that I’d regained all the weight I lost a couple years ago, and probably gained even more, but I couldn’t face the number. Last year, I was stuck in a job I despised and couldn’t deal with the stress of facing the number, then my wedding was approaching, and I didn’t want the number hanging over my head. I wanted to feel beautiful, instead of telling myself, “So, you’re a 215-pound bride. How does that feel?” So I ignored it. And continued to do so. I thought I could lose weight without really paying attention to the number. I’ve been exercising like crazy the last six months, but I keep feeling bigger and bigger. I know pregnancy is hopefully in my future within the next couple years, but I know I’m not ready. I can’t imagine piling pregnancy weight onto this frame, which already feels so foreign and uncomfortable to me. Before I have a child, I need to reclaim my body FOR MYSELF. Today, I decided to try a spin on the “Public Humiliation Diet” I’ve been hearing about. It’s where you post your weight on Facebook for all your friends to see as accountability. I wasn’t ready to do that, but I did write my weight on a Post-It note and put it on the bathroom mirror for my husband to see. It was hard; I worry he’ll see that number and not be as attracted to me, but then I remember he constantly tells me I’m beautiful and supports me unconditionally. And I think about the day I can write on that Post-It that I’ve reached my goal weight, and I know he’ll feel immensely proud of me. I’ll keep posting my weight here, too, because I’ve learned running from the number is only hurting myself.

    I am up .3 this week, and I am FINE with that. Yesterday was my son’s 4th birthday, so we went away for the weekend to Santa’s Village in New Hampshire, and then we had a family day yesterday after school. This weekend, I had doe-nuts, ice cream ( couple of times) a cup cake, & movie theater popcorn; and meals were whatever I could grab. And I loved every minute of this weekend. My son has never cared about birthdays before,and was so excited the whole time! And my daughter’s a fun age too! We swam and went on rides and had fun and had treats and I regret NOTHING!!!! Today I am restocking my fridge & freezer with healthy foods and moving on, but I will enjoy every memory made this weekend (even the fluorescent yellow ice cream on Lake Winnipesaukee at sunset!

    This is my third week of weighing in. There has been a loss each week even though I haven’t been completely committed with my eating at exercise. I think having more awareness has helped, though. Stopping when I’m full even if it means throwing some food away. Acknowledging when I’m eating for stress relief (which is a TON lately because I’m leaving my job of 12 years, got a new job, going back to college, and getting the kids ready for school). Excuses, excuses–I know! It is what it is. :) I know WHY I’m eating when I’m not hungry, which is a good start. Love the public weigh-in without having to actually go to a meeting or start my own blog. Genius Roni–you are AWESOME at keeping people inspired.

    So this was an interesting week. I’m down several pounds and saw a new low this morning. I didn’t eat nearly enough last week but honestly my marriage almost ended. Having a baby has really changed the dynamic. I think we are both committed to figuring this out. What needs to happen is making each other feel more appreciated. Hard to do when you are married to a big firm attorney. His time is limited and my patience all goes for the baby. There was a time where I would have eaten my anxiety but now… I ate a lot of greek yogurt last week, just to get in some calories. Breathe.
    I’m also in a weird spot because I am at the point where people are starting to tell me I am too thin. When I first lost all the weight I was sitting at 160. Down 185 pounds for over 6 years people got very used to me at that weight. But carting around a baby every pound counts. When I get snark I like to point at my knee. If I was even 10 years older I could get a new one, but right now. Nope. Exercise and weight loss.
    I’d like to see 136 by my 36th Birthday in late October. Totally doable, but it better not be because I’ve had more weeks like this!!!

    I’m up 2 ounces from last week so not a huge gain, but I really thought I’d be down some since I was really good over the weekend (it’s usually my downfall). I’ve been doing a lot more strength training, rather than cardio, lately so I just keep telling myself that I’m gaining muscle which weighs more so it’s ok to be up some, not sure if it’s wishful thinking or not :-/

    I only lost 0.4 of a pound this week (technically). I went on a WONDERFUL mini-vacation with my husband and I did track what I was eating (I am doing WW). I didn’t go food crazy but I now I was always over my daily point allowance. All of this is to say that I gained 2.5 pounds while away which makes this week very successful because I actually lost 3 pounds. YAH ME!!!!

    I have done well this week after a weekend with some indulgence. Learning to know this is a lifestyle and not a diet has been the hardest, yet the easiest part. If I choose to eat pizza for dinner, then breakfast the next day is something better instead of throwing in the towel and saying “Well I messed up, so I might as well give up”. This body has to last me alot more years so I might want to treat it nice “most” of the time! Thank you for all your encouraging words!

    Last week I didn’t post the .5 on my highest weight because I didn’t think it mattered. But this week I reached 50 pounds lost, so the .5 mattered! Had a much better week eating on plan and tried Bikram Yoga for the first time – awesome. Really enjoy this – it’s like a mini meeting and helps with support just by reading how others are doing/learning/struggling/sharing/celebrating.

    I weigh in on Sat mornings. They said I was ‘up’ but i wouldn’t look at or wanted to know the exact number. I hope next week I have a positive number to report! I’ve been doing great..so inspired by everyone’s losses this week! I’ve been doing great..not perfect…since last week’s weigh in.     Missed last week because I was camping for 10 days. Tried to eat healthy, but wasn’t always successful. Not to upset about it, happy to have time just on vacation. I have ran 2 half marathons this summer, and lost some weight, but for me I am learning it is mostly about eating. Holidays are over, time to focus. My goal is to be 155 by October 21st my daughters 2nd birthday. I lost the weight in a year with my first but I have struggled with the second weight gain. Just going to stay focused and watch my eating. This weight in helps me be accountable. Thanks :)

Since yesterday morning, I lost 6.2 pounds. I know that most, if not all, of that was water weight…but a loss is a loss, and I’ll take it!

    This was a difficult week for me, for my healthy eating. My daughter moves from our place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to Spain for one year. She is going to study for a Master degree and will be reunited with her boyfriend. I am happy for her but this is a major change in our life. It was a weeks of parties with family and friends.
    I am back on track today. I walked 10 km this morning and cooked healthy food. It is going to be ok.

    Roni, I will be PUMPED to see 149. CANNOT wait – so great job!
    Question: Once in my 20s I weighed 132. Dang was that awesome! It is my fantasy weight. I read somewhere that ideal weight is for a 5′ woman to start at 100 pounds and add 5 pounds for each additional inch. That puts my ideal weight at 130. I cannot fathom being able to eat much more than lettuce at this weight. Thoughts? I wonder if I have just become very accepting of being a higher weight because I “look” fine for an American. Thoughts?

    This is my first time posting in the Weigh-in Wednesday. I love reading all the comments! I find them motivating and supportive. Mostly they remind me that I’m not alone.
    I just weighed in at the Dr’s office on the 14th which is what I put for my current weight. I don’t plan to weigh in again until my appt on the 7th. After that I will start my weekly weigh ins with you guys! I have a habit of letting the scale decide my emotions. I think the 3 week break from the scale will be good for me. So I’m taking it slow and I started this week with committing to working out 30 min every day. So far so good and I think starting out small is the key for me;-)

    This has been the year of the plateau!
    I use food as an escape for the moment and I don’t feel good about my weight and health. I am a dedicated runner and running doesn’t feel good when the wrong fuel is in my body… My goal this week: start eating clean again, screw the scale, just want to feel healthy again on the inside and outside.

    Food is an emotional crutch for me so I know it is about making good choices and breaking a long held cycle. My goal is to lose the three remaining pounds (of six) I have gained this yr before Christmas – then set myself a new goal if that still feels necessary.
    Going to commit to stop putting off returning to running now that my sprained ankle has recovered and just moving again before next weigh in! Head up, eyes forward – thus is just a number. I’m way more complex than that!! :)

    Down .8 :). The best part about this week is that I realized I found my inner bada$$ again. I have finally found the part of me that loves exercising again and it feels great. I had it once before I had my second child and for the past 4 years it has been hiding. I have wonderful trainers who not only push me but also help to change the negative voices in my head. I am working through a knee injury right now, but that has not stopped me from working out and my trainers have helped me find ways to continue working out until my knees get better. It didn’t matter what the scale said this week, because finding my inner BA was more of a victory than any stupid number on the scale.

    It took me a very long time to understand that maintaining a weight is a WIN! Previously I saw it as huge disappointment. It is success, even a high number. It’s not a gain & sometimes our bodies need time to adjust. Ultimately, learning to maintain a weight loss long term is the goal. Not up & down repeatedly.

I’ve basically cut out dairy 4 weeks ago, and gluten 2 weeks ago. Since I am gluten free, I feel amazing differences. Before I was constantly hungry, all I could think of was when and what will I eat next. If I had a bad day, I was snacking throughout the day. Something like 2 days after cutting out gluten, it was all gone! I am eating way less calories, and hardly feel hungry. Maybe feel hunger once a day. The difference is insane! I had a “healthy diet” in every aspect, and had no idea that I have gluten intolerance. I guess what I thought is hunger for years, was really just discomfort in my belly, as I can’t digest gluten properly. Now it’s all gone! Try it, go gluten free for 1 week only (it is not as hard as it seems), and see what happens. Chances are you will feel so much better, more energy, no bloating, no “I am hungry 1 hour after eating”. Skin clears up too. Something like 60% of the population is gluten intolerant, and hardly 1% of them is aware. Many people claim actually everyone would benefit from going GF, not just the ones who are intolerant. Apparently gliadin (a glycoprotein in wheat) messes up the hunger perception.

    I was down .8 this week – a little dissapointing since I worked my butt off at the gym and did really good with food and tracking, but I also expected it after a 3.8 loss last week. I knew a big week would be offset by a smaller one. Just how it works for my body.

    Still plan to hit the gym and track the food just as well this coming week.

    I maintained my 10% loss while on vacation! This a big deal for me because I went in with a goal and stuck with it. (That goal being enjoy myself in moderation and sneak fruits/veggies into any opportunity I get).

    At this point it’s getting so challenging to lose weight, though the main focus is now on body fat more than weight (trying for that 21-24% range). But after a couple weeks of holding steady I did manage to lose a pound this week so I’m pretty thrilled about that. :)

    A stomach bug helped me to lose 3 lbs….I’m much better now and will keep the momentum going. The nastiness helped me break the awful plateau that I was stuck on!
