One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

Running with My 6 Year Old

16 Comments 3087 views

This morning I woke up to 30 degree weather and to be honest, I had NO desire to run in the cold. It doesn’t bother me much in mid-winter but since we’ve already had a taste of spring there’s no going back now. So I decided to wait until the afternoon to get my 4 miles in.

Chart from Nike+

It was a nice run but I had to take a few breaks. I’ve been having a hard time mentally for some reason. I’m just not getting lost in my thoughts like I used to and I can’t figure out why. I felt the same way last week too. It’s weird.

But that’s not why I’m blogging today. Nope. See, Little Guy asked if he could run with me. My Motivation Turn Workout Partner is proven true again and I can only assume as he gets older we’ll do more and more activities together. I’m really looking forward to it!

However, right now, taking a 6 year old on a 4 mile run isn’t realistic. He has the desire though so I made a deal with him. I run the 4 miles I needed to for training and then I’d come home and pick him up for a run around our community. When I got back he was raring to go.

We headed out and had a blast! Maybe another half a mile or so. We ran slow. We ran fast. We walked. We talked.

Thinking about it now is making me smile.

When we got home we took a few post run pictures.

I love being the goofy, hands on parent. As we passed older kids in the community, I realized I don’t have many years left where hanging out with mom is going to be his preferred activity. I better take advantage of it now. :)

For a bit of our running history check out this post. I can’t read that quote without getting tear eyed.

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

However, to prevent the massive amounts of spam I was receiving I have turned off comments on any post older than 5 days old. If you'd like to leave me a note regarding this post or anything really try me on twitter (@RoniNoone,) my Facebook page, or even IG (@RoniNoone) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I never thought I'd have to do this but it's gotten way out of hand and comment management has become simply too time consuming to manage.

Its the best feeling in the world:) I helped train my son for a fitness test when he was earning his black belt and it was the best time spent together. Its amazing when your child thinks youre a superheo and wants to be just like you, nothing like it in the world, enjoy…it gets even better!

That’s so awesome! I have great memories of running with my dad, and riding my bike along side him during longer runs.

Since you actually do spend lots of time with your son, he really may still prefer you lots of times when he’s a teen! Sadly, many parents just shoo their kids off constantly to sit under TV or video games or other friends, so there just isn’t a strong bond built. Looks like you have def made a bond with your son. Wonderful. That was sweet.

That’s so great!! I run with my 8-yr-old, too. Today we ran our first 5k as a family. Making those memories. That’s what life’s all about :o)

So cool! What a great thing to do with your son! I’ve been having lots of workouts where I just couldn’t seem to get in the groove lately.

What great parenting! That is so awesome that you are going out and running with your son. Teaching him that fitness is fun now will help him greatly in his future! As you already know;)

I’ve gotten my 7 year old daughter out with me a few times. She’s even ran a few of Charm City’s kids cross country races.
