One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

13.1 Miles of Sensational Sunday-ness!

Yet again I have a ton of pictures and not enough time to tell you everything swimming in my head. I’ll do my best though. This was quite a day!

It all started at 6:30 AM as I got ready for the run.

Yesterday my baby turned 6 months and today I prepared for a half marathon, my longest run in well over a year. Scheduling this run did exactly what I wanted it to do, get me back into running.

All the boys were sleeping when I left.

I headed to the start with my friend Missy and a few other folks. One of whom did NOT know who Bret Michaels was or at least what band he sang with and I felt exceptionally OLD! (you know who you are ;)

There were guys selling pretzels at 7 in the morning!

I don’t know about you, but THAT is not something I want sitting in my stomach for 13 miles!

Missy and I waiting at the start…

It was INSANE.

So insane that this is a picture of the leaders who already looped while I was still waiting at the starting line. Can you see them?

I didn’t actually get going until 1/2 hour into the race.

3 miles in I saw the boys and they saw me!

The husband couldn’t catch the next few minutes on camera because he had the baby but Little Guy ran with me for about a block and it. was. AWESOME. I had to fight back tears.

I felt great for about the first 6 miles. Just keeping a nice pace. I took a nice walk break around the half way mark and snapped this. It was a gorgeous day for a run.

At the 10 mile mark I asked someone to take my picture.

My last training run was 10 and it nearly killed me. Now I was in uncharted territory.

My legs were getting sore but I just kept trucking. The only thing in my head was "forward progression." "Forward progression." I knew I would cross the finish line if I just kept making forward progression.

The race was fun. They had stages, music, and cheerleaders all scattered along the route. If I ever do another marathon I may just make it a Rock and Roll event. They put on a good run.

All my forward progression thinking got me across the finish line. I did it!

My official time was 2:18:12. I averaged a 10:33/mile. My time 5k in was 30:42, 10k in was 1:02:29 and 10 miles in was 1:43:47. I’m quite surprised. My goal was 2:30 so I was ecstatic!

My post run snack of choice was a banana and these little gems…

Loved that they had more fruit options! It was a very refreshing post-race.

I had a little over a mile walk back to the hotel.

It was seriously a beautiful day.

I got back to the hotel and my boys.

We checked out and hit the town!

We walked to Independence Hall

And saw the Liberty Bell.

Then it was off to Linner! (Late lunch/Early Dinner)

We split some Calamari..

Love that Little Guy splits them with us.

I got tuna.

And we split dessert.

I don’t do cannolis, but the husband really wanted one. Little Guy and I focused on the cake. :)

We got home around 5PM and just vegged for about an hour. Then the Husband and Little Guy played soccer…

while I took Little Bean to the grocery store. I really wanted to start the week on a prepared note.

When I got back Little Guy helped by washing (and taste testing) all the fruit and veggies. :)

And I stocked up for more than just this week.

Once the kids went to bed I made a fun snack and organized the photos from the day.

That was key lime yogurt with strawberries and crushed graham crackers. It was totally yum!

It really was a great day. I can’t believe I ran a half marathon this morning! Then again, I can because my feet are STILL throbbing!

This was actually my 3rd half. Click here to read my first and here for my second and here for a recap of the marathon ran in 2009.

Hope you had a great weekend!

Fantastic job on the race Roni!! It looked like a great day overall.

Great job, Roni!!!! I love the Rock N Roll events! I have done the Rock N Roll Half in VB for 3 years…well, the Half, twice, and a friend and I did the Relay this year. I am doing the Half again next year to celebrate my 40th bday! You should come to VB and run that one! It is always the Sunday of Labor Day weekend! :)

Congrats! I can’t even begin to wreap my mind around running a half :P Must say, that finishing line-ballon-dude looks just… wrong.
The cake looks awesome! I want some, now!
Freak random coincidence: I just watched National Treasure today!

Roni, you’re my f***ing hero!!! you have no idea how much I needed to see this post, I’m in a such a slump (thanks to the girly hormones) and I’m registered for my 1st 5k next month!! I need to keep the “forward progression” in my head and stop worrying about what others will think of me running : / just reading this brought TEARS to my eyes and I know this is something I want to do for myself. I need this. Thank you once again for being you.

Congrats on completing another half – with a great time too! I did one a few years back and I wasn’t happy with my time, but your experience makes me want to try again. Maybe I’ll see if they do a Rock-n-Roll near me down south because they sound like fun! Congrats again on your accomplishment and thanks for the inspiration :)

If you’re looking for a race with a lot of on-course entertainment I’d definitely recommend looking into a Disney race. I ran my first and was VERY impressed. Expensive ($150), but Rock N Rolls are too. We had on-course characters, tons of community groups, and great post-race refreshments (even chilled towels!). Not to mention the GORGEOUS medals they give out and the themed 5K races the day before (ours was Star Wars and all 5K participants got not only a t-shirt, but a medal as well, pretty rare for a 5K). Had to throw in my two cents (I’m a Disney nut, lol).

Congrats on your 3rd half marathon!! I love that your son ran part of the way with you.

    1. It was nice walking and chatting with you yesterday morning. :-)
    2. When Bret Michaels sang “Unskinny Bop”, I couldn’t help thinking about your friend who wouldn’t have known the words. Tragic :-)
    3. I LOVED the Rock n Roll race! Such a fun atmosphere, and SUPER well-organized!
    3. I still cannot believe everything you did AFTER running 13.1 miles!!! You are A-MAZ-ING. I was dead to the world afterwards…
    4. FANTASTIC JOB on the time!!!

    September 19, 2011

I’m so proud of you!! When your son ran with you, I would have cried too! I have a 5k coming up in two weeks and your post has just lit a fire under this girls rear;-) Thank you for all your honesty in all that you do. It shines through your blog! You’re an inspiration to me through your good times and bad!

Bret Michaels!!!! Well….it WAS a Rock and Roll Marathon. My Hubby was a Paramedic-on-a-bike for the Air Force Marathon, here in Ohio.
And yes, THANK YOU for taking us along! I so look forward to your Sensational Sunday Pictures. ( even the laundry ones! lol) I guess I’m just one of those people who LOVE to look at other people’s pictures.

Roni! Congratulations! What an awesome day! I’m so happy for you. I hope to catch my running bug again because my 5k is in a month and I’m struggling to get out the door and run. For some reason my workout of choice has been yoga instead of running. I know I just have to do it and get out there.

    September 19, 2011

Congrats again Roni! You are very inspiring.

    YOU TOTALLY ROCK!!! Congrats.

    September 19, 2011

Hi Roni – I’m a frequent reader of your blog. Congratulations on your race!!! I have a quick question – I also have a new baby at home – just turned 4 months old and I am working on getting back into running. I did the exact same thing you did and signed up for several races to motivate myself to get back out there. My question for you is how have you handled nursing/pumping when you are doing runs longer than an hour or so? I am still nursing my son and I’m really struggling with scheduling nursing/pumping around my longer runs. Any tips/advice?

    September 19, 2011

Way to go Roni on your run! And all the pictures are fabulous. Thanks again for sharing your story!

I was going to run the R&R here in San Antonio, but not sure I can now that I’m pregnant (15 weeks). I’m having a hard time with the extra weight already.

Congrats on completing your first half marathon, and beating your time! Very exciting stuff :-) I’ll be running my first in 12 days and feeling VERY nervous! AAHH!

    September 19, 2011

Unfortunately the Disney races are all in either Anaheim, CA or Orlando, FL, so flying would definitely be required. Anaheim has two (Disneyland half in September and Tinkerbell half in Jan) and Orlando has three (Disneyworld half/full in Jan, Princess half in Feb, and the Wine and Dine Night Half in June). They also have some other challenge races throughout the year.

It’s something to keep in mind as little guy gets older if he wants to run with you. I noticed several parent/child teams at one of the races I ran. (Most of the half marathons have a relay option).

    September 19, 2011

hey that was great. I like spending the day with you and your family. (ha ha).

Reading about your run makes me want to get back into it (for real…not just 3 minute stints on the treadmill). :P

    September 19, 2011

    Congrats Roni! You killed it!

    September 19, 2011

You had such GORGEOUS weather for the race yesterday! A friend of mine ran it as well and PRed. I think Philly is a great place to run. And super impressed with everything you did post-race! Wow. Hope you’re feeling more like yourself today!

    September 19, 2011

    Congratulations Roni! You rocked it!

    September 19, 2011

Caroline – My longer runs happened after I started solids with Little Bean so I wasn’t nursing exclusively when they started. That being said, scheduling any run was tough. I found it easiest to run at night right after I nursed him and let the husband put him to bed.

There really isn’t a science to it. I reacted and took opportunities when I could. Sometimes if the baby would wake up early to nurse I’d sneak out. Sometimes I’d take him with me mid day right after a nursing session. Really, you should be fine if you go out right after you nurse if the runs are under 3 hours.
