BLOGGING THOUGHTS

On NOT Taking Things Personally

8 Comments 1241 views

Seth Godin does it again. He has this uncanny ability to post what I need to hear when I need to hear it.

The day of FitBloggin’11 I get this in my inbox…

“Don’t take it personally.”

This is tough advice. Am I supposed to take it like a chair? Sometimes it seems as though the only way to take it is personally. That customer who doesn’t like your product (your best work) or that running buddy who doesn’t want to run with you any longer…

Here’s the thing: it’s never personal. It’s never about you. How could it be? That person doesn’t truly know you, understand what you want or hear the voices in your head. All they know is themselves.

When someone moves on, when she walks away or even badmouths you or your work, it’s not personal about you. It’s personal about her. Her agenda, her decisions, her story.

Do your work, the best way you know how. Is there any other option?

No, there really isn’t.

I’ve learned that if I do take it personally it cripples me. Preventing me from reaching my goals.

So I will be taking Seth’s advice and doing my work the best way I can. Trying my hardest NOT to take it personally.

Something that is sometimes easier said than done.

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

However, to prevent the massive amounts of spam I was receiving I have turned off comments on any post older than 5 days old. If you'd like to leave me a note regarding this post or anything really try me on twitter (@RoniNoone,) my Facebook page, or even IG (@RoniNoone) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I never thought I'd have to do this but it's gotten way out of hand and comment management has become simply too time consuming to manage.

OMG…I have been dealing with this for the last two days…Someone recommended a book for me to read…to help me not take it personally! When I finish the book…if it is worthy I will pass on the information!

    Have a great day!

I need to remember that the next time I get unfollowed on twitter or Facebook or a “friend” just stops talking to me. I have a hard time believing it isn’t about me.

This is awesome, Roni. Thanks. I know it will help me out the next time I take something ‘personally’.

Oh you have no idea how I needed this today. So much going on and believing it was all my fault and taking it personally.

Looking at it as this way makes it a bit easier to swallow although I’m sure I’ll have to keep working at it.

Trying really hard right now to do this. Was just essentially told to f*** off by a team member when trying to do my job. My team is 3 people so there isn’t anywhere to turn to. Right now am wishing that I could have your job.

I totally needed this today. In all honesty, I probably need this everyday.

That saying reminds me Meg Ryan in the movie You’ve Got Mail. :)
