One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

BLOGGING THOUGHTS

Oh For Pete’s Sake, No, That is NOT what you are Compensating me for!

9 Comments 1273 views

After blogging for 6 years years nothing surprises me anymore. Between irrelevant pitches and crazy comments, I may not have seen it ALL but I’ve seen a lot. Every day is truly an adventure and you know what? I love it. I absolutely love what I do. However…

It’s still WORK.

It may look easy and fun but blogging is very time consuming. Here’s just a quick list of tasks I need to do almost daily…

  • Moderate comments
  • Reply to reader emails
  • Take and edit photos
  • Record and edit video
  • Reply to PR pitches and maintain relationships with brands
  • Research/pursue advertising opportunities
  • Maintain a presence on Social Media Sites
  • Write Posts
  • Research recipes/food ideas and nutritional information (I food blog so this is specific)
  • Review products including reading books and managing inventory
  • Check statistics and respond by editing site

I could go on and on but I think I proved my point.

I’m not writing this to whine or brag but to address something that truly bugs the CRAP out of me. This morning while sifting through the obscene number of emails in my inbox, I came across an offer to add a text-link to my site.

I know some bloggers are anti-text-link but as someone who does this full-time, I need to diversify and explore multiple ways to create money. For me, text-link ads bring in a small percentage of my overall income. So I do pursue them.

However, this particular pitch ended with a line that makes my blood boil…

"We will be more than happy to compensate you for your time and effort placing the advertisement."

First of all…. No. No. No. NO! You are NOT compensating me to place the link. You may think that’s what you are paying me for but why do you want to place the link in the first place? Oh! Is it because I’ve been working my ass off for years generating content that warrants traffic? Is it because I have a fairly good page rank? With a top search engine result for the key words you are targeting? Or is it because I built a strong community that values my opinion? Maybe it’s my brand you want your brand associated with? And what’s this about "more than happy to compensate" you better be "more than happy!" What? do you think I’m just going to put a link to your shady site on mine for FREE?

Please. PLEASE. Do not insult me by saying you are "willing to compensate" me for the 5 minutes it takes to add your silly link to a page in my archives. It is so much more than that. You know it and I know it and I’m not going to disrespect the last 6 years of my blogging career by doing it in exchange for $20.

I’ve written about this before–even getting into discussions with marketers about it–but it warrants a repeat in all CAPS…. MY SITE IS NOT A FREE BILLBOARD FOR YOUR ADS!

*phew* I feel better now.

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

However, to prevent the massive amounts of spam I was receiving I have turned off comments on any post older than 5 days old. If you'd like to leave me a note regarding this post or anything really try me on twitter (@RoniNoone,) my Facebook page, or even IG (@RoniNoone) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I never thought I'd have to do this but it's gotten way out of hand and comment management has become simply too time consuming to manage.

    Right on!

My travel website is about to hit it’s 1.5 millionth visitor. Last month I had a guy write and offer me $75 for a site-wide one year link in the footer. I wrote back and said I would love to talk to him, but a site-wide link in the footer would be $15,000 per year.

    His head exploded.

Oh yeah. And isn’t always porn, too, that they want you to promote?  I got one last week from someone saying she was a freelance copywriter and would put stuff on my site for free…all she wanted was a few links. AAAAARGH!
