How many times have you said it?

I can’t lose weight.

I can’t run.

I can’t workout.

I can’t eat like that.

I can’t…….

I’m guilty. I’ll admit it.

Regardless of why I thought I couldn’t, I uttered the words “I can’t run” since I was a kid. I told myself it so many times that I really believed it. I also continuously said I couldn’t lose weight. I said I couldn’t do a pull up. I even cried “I can’t do this” while giving birth and ummm, well yea.. I didn’t have a choice by that time but still you get my point. ;)

Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Next time you are about to utter the words “I can’t” pause and think about what you are saying. Not wanting to do something is one thing. Not believing you can do something is another.

Great reminder Roni. Speak what you want!! Thanks!

Thanks Roni! I needed this reminder this morning. I was about to whine even more about having to work and do clinical rotations (65 hours a week!) and how hard of a time I’ve been having with my eating (yeah, half a pizza for dinner and the other half for breakfast, EESH!). And reading this reminded me that I CAN do better. I may not be perfect and I may still make bad choices but I can make better choices everyday and at every meal. The only thing stopping me is ME.

I have always, always said ‘I can’t run’. I told my husband once that my body wasn’t ‘built’ for running! Now, in Aug. I’m running my second race! http://www.warriordash.com/register2010_rockies.php

  4. This is really an awesome quote, and words that we should all strive to live by. Philosophically, I think it’s called “beliefism,” the concept that belief is more important than anything else. If you believe something to be true, it becomes true. Though we generally like to think of that in the positive, I agree, it’s just as true in the negative sense.

  5. That is an excellent positive thought! Thanks!

  6. @Kelly … Hear, hear! I’ve been guilty of that, too. I hear myself thinking it now: “I can’t seem to get back on track and stay on track …”

But like you, I can make better choices at every meal. The only thing stopping me is me!

Thanks for the reminder, guys. Now, I’m getting up off my butt to get a healthy meal (breakfast or lunch? I just woke up) before work.

  7. amen to that! i definitely believe we live out what who we THINK we are; what we think we deserve. i know for me, everything changed once i started calling myself a “health nut”, instead of a “dieter”. a “health nut” was something to be proud of! she doesn’t need restrictions; she makes better choices because that’s just who she is. funny how the world changes just by perspective. :)

  8. I can’t was always a part of my vocabulary. Now I talk back to myself and ask what part of the activity I think I can’t do. Then I work on that instead of focusing on the entire thing.

  9. Melanie says:

Love it!! I should recite this every morning before I get out of bed!!!! Thanks for helping to motivate me!

  10. Reinaldo says:

Once again you made my brain work. Stop it! It hurts! =) Just when I thought I had the “I can’t” thing under control, I found two after reading your post:” I can’t get more flexibility, it just the way I am” and “I can’t learn karate, I’m too old for that”. Umh… should I transform this I can’t into goals???

  11. Barry Hughes says:

I can do this – it is my time for change.

  12. Priyanka says:

Very motivational !Something to remind oneself each morning!

    Thanks Roni!

  13. Loren says:

You did a pull up? How? Were you working specifically toward doing a pull up? That is one of my “I can’t”s that I would love to turn into an “I can.” OK, I’m gonna go google it.

  14. roni says:

It was a specific goal. Took me FOREVER and I’m not particularly good at it but it’s doable with work!

  15. Laura says:

This reminds me of a blog I recently found that I love: positivityblog.com. He is often putting up quotes from Ghandi, and other great thinkers.

I hear ya, Roni. I used to say that I couldn’t run, because of foot pain; lo and behold, running has made my foot pain BETTER (mostly because I lost weight while doing it).

Today I paused when grabbing my running stuff bag out of the car, saying “I don’t have time to run today.” I’m still working on where that time will come from, but I know that I have to run today, somehow. It just has to happen.

So remember folks, sometimes it’s not always “I can’t,” but it’ll creep up on you in “I don’t have time”s, and “I don’t want to”s.

  16. Lisa says:

Don’t talk yourself out of things! Talk yourself INTO things!! Keep saying “I can do this! I can do this!” When I ran my first 8k recently I was struggling…I hadn’t realized it would be all UPHILL! But I kept telling myself I could finish without walking and I did!

On another note, I just saw your pictures of the tummy tuck. That’s something I’m interested in someday….I lost 110 pounds and while most of my skin tightened up, there’s still a little around my waist that I think has to be removed surgically. :(

A week later I’m still struggling to get back on track…but I’m still trying to figure it out.
