Marathon Training Schedule Starts Monday!
I always feel like I have to start these kinds of posts with a bit of a history lesson. I know if I saw some running lunatic post a training schedule like this I’d assume there were always an athlete. At least naturally active and would never suspect they had body image issues or have ever wanted or needed to lose weight. So for long time readers please skip over this link history. New readers… just know if you asked me 2 years ago if I would ever run or want to run a marathon I’d say maybe, 5 years ago I’d say you were crazy and 10 years ago I’d say you were freakin’ lunatic for even asking such a ridiculous question.
- Some of you may not know but I was NOT an exerciser and I lost weight by just mostly "staying active" and a lot of that was dancing around my house like a nut-ball.
- Then I started Thinking About It which led to me actually joining a gym and declaring myself a gym rat soon followed.
- Then a friend put the running bug in my ear. (Re-reading the end of that post is exactly how I felt when I started running)
- I ran my first 5k run on a treadmill and I nearly died from shock.
- Then I took my running outside and even the toddler was impressed. :)
- After my first 5K event I was hooked!
- Then I found the Nike+ and fell in love!
- Soon I was training for a relay in the Baltimore Marathon Relay
- My first 40 minute run was a milestone.
- Then someone called me Racing Roni and it made me examine at where I came from.
- In 2008’s Marathon I ran 6 miles was SO amazing I decided to take a leap and sign up for the 2009 Marathon!
- With some training I ran the 10 mile Cherry Blossom and my first ever half marathon!
- My training was far from perfect but I managed to get in a few long runs like 12 miles in Chicago, 15 miles a few weeks ago and my most recent 20 mile run.
- Then I crossed the finish line of my very first marathon!
- Determined to keep running a part of my life, I set a goal of running 1 even a month in 2010.
After getting some wonderful feedback when I posted about registering for the Rock ānā Roll Las Vegas Marathon I edited my initial training thoughts. This is what I came up with. I’m not going to lie.. I’m scared to death! But I’m also looking forward to it. It’s not about losing/maintaining weight or getting to a specific size it’s about seeing what my body is capable of. For the first time in my life I actually feel like an athlete and that’s a complete head trip for me. It’s unbelievable, yet here I am posting this.

I'm Roni, a 30ish working mom that started this blog in '05 to journal my weight loss. 70lbs later, I'm commited to living a conscious, healthy life and I hope to inspire others along the way.

I’m doing the Philly 1/2! Congrats and good luck!!
I love that you give the background. I get intimidated by bloggers’ big racing plans. It makes me think they are natural runners instead of doing it like me.
Congrats!
That’s awesome Roni! I just came across a movie that a fellow marathon runner made when we did Team in Training in Chicago. She profiled 5 runners 3 of which I ran with. One was the maker of the film, Lesley and Marty and Mimi. Another runner has run all Chicago Marathons. You can watch the video from her site http://www.whytheyrun.com. If you want to be motivated to finish a marathon this is it.
Awesome. I’m training for a 1/2 and scared to death.
Instense. I can’t even begin to imagine running that far. It will be fun to hear how it goes!!! Congrats on your decision!!!
I’d say that you are already half way there, so to speak. You’ve got a goal, motivation and a plan! Keep us updated.
Thank you for posting this. I know KNOW that my lack of exercise these past two weeks have been me avoiding the training for the 1/2 marathon. This is what I needed and I’ve got my mind in the right place for it now. WOOT! Here’s to Vegas baby!
Thanks for sharing your chart. I just got a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society postcard in the mail about a joining a virtual team to train for half or full marathon. I guess I need to start thinking about it…Time to set some goals…
Congrats on a solid marathon training program! Looks good!
I’m about half-way through mine and while the running is coming along well, the mental part is struggling so it’s great to see your enthusiasm–thanks!!
Good luck!!
Wow, how exciting. I’m eagerly awaiting my first 5k in September. I am more than ready. I am already jumping ahead in my brain thinking about next year’s Pittsburgh 1/2 (there was a flyer for early registration in yesterday’s local paper). I know I’m not there yet, but I want to be so badly.
The biggest part of any task is the preparation – and you have that well under control! How exciting for you! Can’t wait to see how it goes! I’m a bit envious… Had a ham string strain so can’t run the rest of the summer… I’m so bummed!
I needed to read this today, I signed up for a 10mi race in Oct. and I am terrified! Your post made me reflect on how far I’ve come in the past two years with exercise and I realized that I need to just do the training (I start Monday too) and trust myself that I can do this!
There’s always something so wonderful about a fresh training schedule. I’m running my first 10 mile in 9 years in Oct. and started training this week. All the best to you!
Roni, you continue to amaze me! I wanna be just like you when I am a running grown up (lol). maybe not the marathon but the consistently happy running part! You inspire me.
Thanks again for the run in AC! I had a blast and learned a lot! Plus, we had some awesome sorbet… ;-)
much love, jen
That’s amazing…I signed up for the Las Vegas Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon; I knew MizFit was doing it, I didn’t realize you were doing the full! Hope to see/meet you out there!
Keep on truckin’. Are you following a specific marathon plan like Galloway? My favorite is not well known called the 100 day marathon plan.
I based it on Higdons plan. :)
