I Rocked 15 miles This Morning. Literally.
September 12, 2009
Last night while driving home from a much needed girls night out (a few friends invited me for sushi and gelato) the song Blackened by Metallica came on the radio. I was immediately transformed back to the 13 year old version of myself dressed in head to toe black with a my staple patched up jean jacket, long hair and bangs. As I jammed out listening louder then any self respecting 30-something mom should I thought… "YES! I need a new running mix"
So I came home, hit iTunes and put together the most awesome mix ever! Seriously this was exactly what i needed to attempt 15 miles. And even though it wasn’t long enough for my 2 hour 53 minute run this morning the fast angry beats kept me going.
Oh yeah did I tell ya.. I RAN 15 MILES THIS MORNING!
Well I didn’t run the whole thing. I broke to walk about every 3 miles but I swear that gave me WAY more energy and stamina through the whole run. The marathon is only 4 short weeks away and even though I’m not as ready as I wanted to be I’m excited. I’ve been looking at the course map and mentally preparing for it. I’m planning a special running mix and you can bet most if not all of these songs will be on it!
So here’s the mix. Let me warn you now, it’s very explicit. If you are easily offended don’t even read the titles. I’ve always been a fan of this style of music but I realize it’s not for everyone.
I feel compelled to end this post with a ROCK ON! so I will.
ROCK ON!

AWESOME!!! One of my faves on that list is Judith by A Perfect Circle. I don’t see any Tool on there. One of my faves too. (given that you like A Perfect Circle)
I like to use Tool (and A Perfect Circle) as my power songs. They really help me power through.
That being said, I also like Wham! ;)
Rock on!

I admire you for running 15 miles. I really don’t think I could do it , at least not yet.
Some of these songs sound like the songs of my past, and some of them actually are songs of my past. It’s amazing how energizing this “dark music” is. I can never run good enough with classical music playing in my ears. It just does not work.
I am sure I will be coming back to this list in the future to find a few good running songs. Thanks for compiling this list.

I have known and loved quite a few of these but I guess when I started running I always ran to techno/house music – maybe I’ll have to give a similar mix a try! Great job on 15 miles!

This has always been the kind of music I prefer to run to. Angry music with a strong beat helps spur me on! (For much SHORTER distances than what you run, of course.) A year or so ago I posted a running mix that included similar songs…and you have some good suggestions! I’m going to make note of them. :)

That playlist reminds me so much of one of my good HS friends. Not my type of music but she loved it. It was always a challenge for us to find things to agree to listen to.
I’m glad the music got you through your run. Most people don’t expect my play lists either so its fun to be surprised by others tastes. :-)

Do you usually take walk breaks when you run? I can’t imagine doing it any other way. The only times I don’t stop to walk are during races!

Hey, lovin that list! Did you have to urge to play any air guitar on the way? That would have stirred the air guitarist in me and that would have caused a fall. I am clumsy enough on my walks! Rock on Ronnie! I knew there were more closet headbangers out there, thanks!

Wow, go Roni! I really think you’ll be just fine for the marathon. I’ve heard that for a marathon, you just need to get up to like 18-20 miles before the actual marathon, then you just run extra long that one day. I could be wrong though. Regardless, you’re DOING this despite your current living situation and responsibilities of working full time and being a full-time mother and wife! You are so inspiring!

Roni~ Wow… I just found your site and love it. I once too was very heavy… over 300 lbs…. I’ve done every diet and had gastric bypass in 2002. In 2007, I did Jenny Craig and lost over 60 lbs. Now, as a few pounds sneaked up on me I am doing WW online. I have struggled with my weight since the 4th grade. The last 3 years I added exercise and lost more weight. I started running and did my first 5K Sept. 2008. I am currently training for a 10K on Nov. 1st. Affter RUNNING 10 miles yesterday, I decided to try a 1/2 Marathon in November. Being inspired by your blog, finding 2 friends to train with, I feel I can do what ever I put my mind too! Oh and the reason for this post.. my running partner was blowing past me yesterday b/c of all her new songs on her ipod, so you reminded me to go online and get some new running tunes! Note to your followers… I am a single mom, works full-time and have active kids. If I can find time to exercise, anyone can!

Roni, you have similar taste to me, but my choices are always more punk than metal. Give these a try for variety: best running songs ever: Dropkick Murphys, “Shipping Up to Boston,” “Fortunate Son” — both great for sprints; also, Blink 182: “All the Small Things”; Pennywise: “Bro Hymn Anthem;” Social Distortion: “Mommy’s Little Monster” and “Another State of Mind”; best steady pace jogging songs: Moby, “Extreme Ways”; Madonna’s “Hung Up”; White Stripes, “Seven Nation Army.” All of these make me run faster, longer, harder. In fact, until I found the right mix, I didn’t run at all. Makes all the difference in the world.
