The Toddler Birthday Party and Poll
Today was the toddlers BIG day. His 4th Birthday Bash! It was a jam packed fun-filled-perfect day!
It all started this morning when the toddler ran into my room at 6AM to ask if this was his "birthday day". I smiled and said, "yuppers!" He was SO happy and SO concerned about gift bags. I swear his favorite part of anyone’s birthday, including his own, is the small little trinket favors you get. It’s so cute.
I hopped out of bed with him and realized heading to the gym was a pipe dream. There was just no time. So I did a routine on Exercise TV and then the toddler and I played and danced and jumped around until we were BOTH out of breath.
After our play session we hit the kitchen to prepare for the party. We made some Big Simple Chocolate Cupcakes and fruit salad.

We had a blast. It was a great morning and this is how I will remember the toddlers last weekend as a toddler. :)

Then we were off too a local bounce play place. We bounced.. we played.. it was AWESOMELY fun. I’m so glad I wasn’t the only parent who got down and dirty with the kids. We were all jumping around and just having a great time. The husband and I even got in a round of boxing!

Then it was food time. I may have had a slice or two extra of the pizza but it was cut small for the kids. ;~) The cake was good but a slice was all I needed. Plus I knew I had my lighter cupcakes at home.
Once we got back to the house the party got more intimate with mostly family and close friends. I grilled lean burgers, Grilled Honey Mustard Turkey Oat Burgers and my new Asian Apricot Marinade AKA "The Delicious Chicken." Paired with some corn on the cob and baked beans it was an overall healthy spread with not one complaint! See… no one missed the mayo laden summer salads or high fat hot dogs if you replace them with lighter healthier turkey burgers and grilled chicken. Plus everyone loved the cupcakes that were made with pumpkin and my giant fruit salad is completely gone!
The toddler had such a full day he crashed around 7 watching one of new DVD’s. I ended up taking my best friend, Mom and Father-in-law for a ride to see the new house site. By the time I got back the little guy was dead asleep. It was time for the adults to pull out the Wii and have some fun. :)
Right now everyone’s in bed but me. I felt compelled to write about the day and I really wanted to publish the poll for "the toddler’s" new name. He has 2 more days until he’s officially 4. I still can’t believe it. I really don’t think people realize how fast time flies by until they have a child of their own. All of a sudden you have a constant reminder. It’s wonderful and sad at the same time.
OK, I’m getting too deep. :) I need sleep and anyway… What I really want to know is…

What's Cooking in my kitchen?

I'm LOVING Pinterest! I can just scroll all day long looking at food photo after food photo. I wish I had more time to peruse! (I'm RoniNoone there by the way?) The other day I pinned a Portabello Mushroom pizza and was immediately inspired. It's such a simple idea and so light. [...] -
The other day I found myself craving an Orange Julius. Are they as popular as I think they are? Growing up we had an Orange Julius at our local mall. It was always a treat for us at the end of a family shopping trip. Once I was old enough to be [...] -
So I'm a little breakfast nutty at the moment. Little Bean LOVES eggs and I find myself cooking them more and more. This morning I decided to go super light (after last nights chocolate overload) and it was totally satisfying for just over 100 calories! The trick to making [...] -
A few weeks ago I saw Chef Michael Simon make a raw kale salad on The Chew. He sliced beets up real thin and cut the kale into ribbons. Then made a vinaigrette out of red wine vinegar and olive oil. I was immediately intrigued. So far I've only [...] -
I've had this idea for a quick creamy chicken dish for a few days now. It was time to give it a shot. The whole family LOVED it. I'm not joking. The only complaint came from Little Guy who declared his hate of mushrooms yet again BUT he ate everything around them. Fine [...] -
I made this on a total whim yesterday as I had leftover avocado after feeding the baby and leftover Spaghetti squash cooked from the weekend. I roasted the squash to serve with my Chicken tips instead of potatoes and it was AMAZING! Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. So I'm sitting there staring [...] -
It's post holiday season. You know what that means? Leftover Crescent rolls to experiment with! Every year for Thanksgiving I buy a few canisters. It's the only time I do as I can't be trusted around them. Let's just say I'd beat you in the How-Many-Crescent-Rolls-Can-You-Eat-In-One-Sitting game and leave [...] -
Last week the kids and I tried parsnips for the first time and I've made them 3 times since. I wanted to figure out the best way to roast them. Yeah, that's it, the best way to roast them. You'll buy that right? Right? The truth is, I'm obsessed. I found myself [...] -
Yesterday just felt like a good day to stuff an acorn squash. I had one sitting on my counter for quite some time and it was just begging to be cooked. Since both husband and child don't like it I made a solo meal just for me and, well, it was DELICIOUS! [...] -
I bought a fennel bulb on a whim for the holidays not knowing quite what I would do with it. Of course I forgot about until yesterday when I was rummaging through the fridge trying to figure out what I wanted to make for breakfast. I pulled it out and stared [...] -
I probably should have warned you I was taking a holiday hiatus. I've been soaking up every moment of family time imaginable these last few days, leaving no time for anything else. Not even blogging! Shocking I know. ;) So I return not with a new recipe, per se, but to [...] -
Here's a quick idea for when you find yourself with a spaghetti squash but don't quite know what to do with it. Come on. Admit it. That's happened to you too. It's sure happened to me! I roasted this squash on Sunday... [...] -
I'm not sure if this will be a crowd pleaser, but I liked it and thought I'd share in hopes it inspires you to have some fun with kale. I loved the combination of sweet pear, earthy kale, salty bacon bits and creamy hummus. The only issue with the wrap was [...] -
I'm going on day 2 of counting Weight Watcher Points and I'm already inspired to come up with light, healthy meals for myself. It's like I needed the constraint of points to motivate me. Isn't that weird? Anyway, all morning I was brainstorming what to make for lunch. I wanted something flavorful [...] -
I have a friend who patiently cleaned, peeled and cubed a fresh pumpkin and then selflessly gave me some. Scratch that, a TON! I would have never even thought of doing something like that! But now that I have it in my fridge the ideas are flowing. First, I roasted some [...] -
CHRISTMAS COOKIES! YAY! Sorry. I'm so excited! Little Guy and I had tons of fun making and decorating cookies today. It may just be my favorite part of the holiday season. I loved it when I was a kid and now I get to do it with my own kids. [...] -
This may be my simplest idea yet, but it was so tasty and satisfying I had to share. Plus you guys know I'm a Laughing Cow Community Leader so I'm all about sharing fun ways to use their products. You guys may also know how I feel about pausing and making [...] -
I made this on Thursday. THURSDAY! I hate when I can't post something I've eaten within 24 hours. It just bugs me. Not sure why, it really doesn't matter when I post it, does it? Anyway, I did whip this up to cure a pizza craving and I couldn't be happier. [...] -
It's been awhile since I jazzed up a tilapia fillet. I've breaded them before, coated them in oats, flavored them like one of my favorite drinks and topped them with a fun salsa. It was time to bring nuts into the party. You are going to think I'm crazy but I've [...] -
Fun leftover turkey idea #2! Click here for leftover turkey idea #1. I had a little Gouda leftover from this years Harvest Salad and decided to put all the same flavors from the salad into a quesadilla. I just can't get enough of the smokey gouda/sweet craisin combo. It goes [...] -
It's the day after Thanksgiving and my refrigerator ROCKS! I have leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, roasted Brussels Sprouts, a bunch of veggies and tons of miscellaneous fun stuff. I've already made stock from the bones (like this) and my first batch of soup, Classic Turkey Noodle. I hope to share [...] -
I'm so sorry I've been slacking in the Thanksgiving recipe department. I feel like a bad food blogger. Everyone else is posting festive ideas and here I've gone missing for a few days. Maybe it's because I'm not doing anything special for Turkey day. I finally got my holiday cooking [...] -
I just made a quick, tasty one pot meal the whole family ate without complaint! And when I say "whole" I mean WHOLE! The Baby, The Little Guy, AND The Picky Eater Husband! Here's the story…I was in NO mood to spend a lot of time on dinner. The thought [...] -
Sunday I made this sandwich on a complete whim. I just bought a bunch of red delicious apples (they were on sale.) I had 2 slices of turkey breast left in the fridge and a few wedges of The Laughing Cow Cheese just waiting to be used. As you guys may [...] -
I bought a bag of kale instead of a bag of spinach this week. My plan was to figure out ways to get this power house vegetable IN me and hopefully IN my family, although unless I hide it, they aren't game. According to NutritionData.com, Kale... [...]

Congrats on your healthy and lovely offspring! I just RANDOMLY came across your site last night when I was looking up a brocolli cheese soup recipe (I think that’s what I was looking up, I can’t remember now!). Anyway, your site is a major inspiration, you make it look so easy! I hope to achieve similar results someday and have started (or re-started?) blogging about it, which will hopefully help me stay accountable and on TRACK! anyway, in a VERY long way, just saying thanks and congrats!
Roni, I’ve been reading yours blogs for several years, love them all. Your hard work is very apparent.
Just wanted to say that I think you’re a terrific Mom. I feel it’s very important to have your child involved in making healthy food choices from an early age and you’ve done such an amazing job with the Toddler in that respect. You’re truly a role model for all us up and coming Moms. :)
Glad the party went well!
Happy Birthday to the Toddler! Sounds like a great day! When you watch the Exercise on Demand videos, do you watch them on your computer or is there a way to hook your computer up to the TV?
Michele – I did it on the TV for the first time. I have “onDemand” thru Comcast. Not sure how to hook up the computer but I’m sure it’s possible.
Happy Birthday The Toddler! I was all for The Kidlet. But that’s not a choice…. hmmm.
Glad the party was a big hit!
~Lisa
LOL I’ll add it!! :)
Time certainly does seem to fly by whenever you have kids! Glad the party went well. And good luck with the transition from “The Toddler”, whatever you choose! I call my own minions “The Dumbbells”. =P
Yes, time flies by so quickly. My toddler will be 3 in August and I almost feel a lump in my throat coming. It was so fast. However, I think I will be more emotional when he is finished POTTY TRAINIG —- UGH! (ha ha ha)
Congrats mama! I understand how it is a fabulous time, and slightly sad. Mostly fabulous though. Every year we watch the kids’ birth videos at their birthday (born within just 4 days of each other 2 years apart). I get all sad but am so proud of who they’ve become.
You were smart to cook such a healthy spread :) I totally went over the deep end (with all good intentions leading up to it) with my kids’ birthdays.
shaking my head that you had enough energy to post after all that. :)
Sounds like a wonderful birthday for adults and kids alike!
BTW, I voted for “the son” but I actually have a “write-in” vote…
“the kiddo”
Have a great Sunday!
What a fun day! I placed my vote for “the little guy”!! You’re right, they do grow up soooo fast. At first, you can’t wait for them to be old enough to do certain things and then all of a sudden they are old enough to do a LOT of things and you want it all to just stop!!
I have been reading your site since the toddler just became a toddler from a baby…you are right, time sure does fly when you have kids! I always feel older on my kids birthday than my own..my daughter just turned 12 and I can’t beleive I have a 12 year old!!!
Happy Birthday, Toddler!
Happy Birthday to “the kid/the little guy” (my two votes)! What a fun mom he has! :)
how about calling him “mini-me” he looks so much like you!
My goodness! He looks so “old” in the cupcake pics! It’s been great watching him grow up on your blog. I vote for the “little guy”. In a year or so, he can be The Kindergartener!”
Happy Birthday, Toddler! They grow up so fast… Sounds like an awesome day! My vote is with the majority for “the little guy.” I hope you and the little guy are going to have a great week! :)
Happy Birthday Ryan! So exciting!
I have two sons (ages almost 6 and just turned 9) I usually call them “kiddo” or “boy-o” Of your choices, “The Boy” gets my vote.
Happy Birthday!! They do grow up too fast!
I giggled at your poll. My parents only have 4 grandsons, will never have a granddaughter (I have 3 boys, my brother has 1 – neither of us will have more kids) and my dad calls them, in order of their age, ‘the big guy(9), the medium-big guy(7), the medium guy(4) and the little guy(2)’. It works.
Happy Birthday Ryan (Dog!) and happy birth-day to you, too Roni. Sounds like you guys had a fantastic celebration and the food you mentioned is making me hungry. =) My vote goes for The Boy. I have two sons, and when we’re goofing off I often call them Pete & Repeat although neither of them are named Pete. LOL
This was from last night
Me: I’m so sad “the toddler” isn’t going to be “the toddler” anymore
Husband: (completely serious and knowing exactly what I am talking about)
Is he going to be “The Kid” now
Me: I don’t know yet, Roni’s doing a poll, so far “the little guy” is winning.
;)
We just celebrated my little girls 6th Birthday soon is her big sisters 12th! It goes far to quickly. I did pretty well with the healthy food & had prepped the day before. I did have a piece of cake at the party though!
Happy birthday Toddler! My vote is to call him “the preschooler”.
Hey Roni,
How about “Mini Dude”?
I vote for ‘The Little Guy’, but that’s only because ‘Stud Puppy’ is not on the list.
Husbands tend to like this – it automatically makes them ‘Stud Man’.
Happy Birthday Ryan! We share the same birthday!
I voted for “the kid”. Mine are 25 and 27 and I still call them that!
I THINK HE SHOULD BE CALLED LITTLE MAN, BECAUSE HE IS A LITTLE MAN…….
