I have made a committment to just clean the house and my car every week. I wear my heart monitor while doing it and can burn 345 calories cleaning the car. WHAT! It almost feels like cheating. Gardening, cutting the grass, pulling weeds, cleaning the windows, scrubbing the restrooms -- I have done all these things while wearing the heart monitor and it encourages me to keep "going"...keep "cleaning". It feels like I'm killing two birds with one stone.

I have 2 small kids so sometimes, I play "races" with them up and down our drive way to determine the champion of the world! Or yesterday, I just took my kettlebell and walked with them to the neighborhood park. While they were playing, I was swinging that kettlebell.

I've pretty much given up my gym membership for a while and have set up my own little gym in the garage with a punching bag, kettlebells, dumbells, jumprope and a small tv. I watch exercise DVDs ranging from kickboxing (Turbo Jam) to dancing (Zumba!) and am I really, really loving it. I love that I can still watch my kids and get exercise....

Hi there!

Love Wall-E, too!

Here is the first rule for activity: Find something you ENJOY, otherwise you won't be able to do it on a regular basis. Except if you are forced by your doctor.

I try to walk as much as I possibly can every day, i.e. to or from work or sometimes both, climb stairs, etc.

And I do bellydancing, I love dancing!

And I should hit the gym more often, I know.

And summer is close and my boyfriend and I got ourselves a badminton set for the park. And we already used it and had so much fun! Highly recommend it!

I recently had a varicose vein treatment in my legs, and part of the therapy for this was that I have to walk for one hour every day. Every single day. Before this I walked a couple times a week, maybe. But something about having the doctor tell me I had to do it somehow made it easier for me to get on the treadmill every day. It's been four months, and I do two 30 minute walks on the treadmill. Every day. Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, sick days, busy days, lazy days. My kids are used to me saying, "Mommy's going downstairs to do her walk now" It has truly become part of my day. I've since upped the intensity a bit and added some hand weights. It's funny, because the more I do it, the more I want to do it. I'm thankful for those doctor's orders, because I'm sure I would have found one excuse after another to NOT do it. But now that it's become a regular part of my day, I can't go back.

Here is a quick list. I like you started with the "little" things and then just progressed. Park far away, kick boxing, running, work out videos, soccer with the kids, swimming, weight lifting, take the stairs. I just look at everything as an opportunity to burn a calorie and improve my general health and improve my fitness level.

When my husband and I started "moving more" we started by walking 1 mile, three times a week, and even that seemed like a LOT to me...

Now? I do Wii-fit at least 3 times a week (often I do Step while I watch old TV shows) and hit the gym twice a week for ~30 to ~90 minutes, depending on how I'm feeling. Also, I'm training for a 3-day 60 mile walk for Breast Cancer Awareness, so on Sunday I walk. I did 8 miles this week!

But it's all about starting small. If you try to go full bore, you'll burn out. Do as much activity as feels just a little uncomfortable (if you're completely comfortable with it, you're probably not doing enough) and then increase from there.

I read all these fitness activity posts and know I'm really in the wrong place - especially mentally. So many are already going where I struggle - and I do mean struggle! - to get going. I have been in a super funk lately, and find 'life' weighs me down so much that before I can even get started in the day all my energy has been zapped to oblivion. I know it's always been said that we don't need help at home, we just need to do it, but I am exactly where Kristin (Biggest Loser last night) said she was. It's like a fly stuck on one of those sticky tapes. The harder I try to get away from that place, the more I am stuck in it. I just wish I had a trainer, or a person who works with me, pushes me when I give up on myself, and knows where I will get to successfully even when I have no belief in any of it. This funk is driving me mad, making me angry! It's like a dog chasing a cat and finding the chain attached to their collar suddenly runs out. That success, that goal, remains out of reach and seems to get further away causing a more hopeless scenario with each insuccessful attempt. Isn't that like Pavlov's classic conditioning? I know hopeless is not true in this case, but the opposite is hard (if not impossible) to imagine. I think this response I'm writing is a spin off of last night's Rant. It's not a good place I'm in right now.

I walk whenever the weather permits. I have a ton of workout DVDs that I enjoy and also use my exercise bike.
My favorite things to do for activity are lifting weights, Tae Bo, Kundalini Yoga and walking for my peace of mind.

I recently cancelled my gym membership after being a regular gym rat for over 4 years. Now I do yoga every morning, take dance lessons, walk every chance I get, bike, garden, and do chores around the house to stay active. I'm not missing the gym at all for now, although I may go back sometime.
