Weekend Quote & My Running History & a 10 Mile Playlist

26 Comments 3829 views

I can’t believe it’s here. When I sat down and planned my training for this years goals (all running related) the Cherry Blossom 10 miler seemed so far in the future. Not only distant but impossible. I really wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it. Now I’m confident. That didn’t happen overnight. I had to run through a few running walls to get here. It’s been quite a journey…

"What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been"
-Grateful Dead.

NOOOO that’s not the Weekend Quote! I just needed to say it after looking back at my running progression! It really has been a long strange trip and guess what…. It’s NOT over! :)

Nope this weekends quote could not be a better one. Lauren sent it to me, she believes it’s from runners world…

If you can walk from the couch to the refrigerator, you are not too fat or too old or too slow to run.

LOVE IT! And take it from me, the girl who thought she couldn’t run, it’s SO true. I think too many people think they have to run so fast or so far to be "runners." If you can walk you can "run" all you need to do is find your own pace.

Alright this is getting longer then I have time for! I need to straighten up and get to bed. We are heading out at 5:30 to get to DC for the race. The toddler is TOTALLY psyched because he gets to ride "the train". :)

Here’s the mix I put together. Most of these are repeats from prior mixes. Links will open in iTunes.

Song Time Notes/My Inspiration
Mad World -Michael Andrews & Gary Jules 3:08 May seem like a strange start to race but this song sets me into a reflective mood and the first few minutes of a race are always slow anyway.
Run (I’m a Natural Disaster) -Gnarls Barkley 2:40 The title says it all. Great song for a running mix!
Plowed -Sponge 3:18 An old fav of mine.
O Valencia! -The Decemberists 3:48 A new fav of mine.
Sex On Fire -Kings of Leon 3:23 Great song and perfect beat to run too! (They have tons of great running songs)
Suicide Blonde -INXS 3:51 Just love it! :)
I’m Shipping Up to Boston -Dropkick Murphys 2:34 I fell in love with this song after seeing the Departed. It’s an awesome workout/running song.
My Prerogative -Bobby Brown 4:52 Always a good one for me. I mean Bobby even wrote a song about me .;~P
So What -P!nk 3:34 P!nk really is AWESOME!
Beautiful Day -U2 4:08 I’m hoping by this point it is beautiful and I’m ready to soak it in.
United States of Whatever -Liam Lynch 1:29 TOTALLY get’s me pumped. It’s fast, it’s short and fun!
Break Stuff -Limp Bizkit 2:47 It get’s me angry and sometimes angry is good on a run.
I’m Not Like Everybody Else -The Kinks 3:28 This is my absolute favorite running song. It gives me that mental motivation to keep going everytime. (sorry it’s not on iTunes :(
Let’s Live For Today -The Grass Roots 2:52 Just a song I really relate to. It pretty much sums up the state of mind I strive for.
If I’m a Man -Burning Brides 3:42 I just LOVE this song, especially becuase I’m not a man. Not sure if that makes sense.
Handlebars -Flobots 3:27 You may think it’s a strange one but the intensitiy builts and I love running to this song.
Crazy -Gnarls Barkley 2:58 Another one I just love. I really think I am Crazy. lol
Get up offa That Thing -James Brown 4:10 James Brown ’nuff said.
Keep the Car Running -Arcade Fire 3:29 The second most perfect running song ever.
Flathead -The Fratellis 3:17 Geat beat to run too.
Istanbul Not Constantinople -They Might Be Giants 2:33 I’m thinking I’m going to need something to make me smile at this point.

Walking Down the Line -Arlo Guthrie

3:36 Another one that makes me smile. (iTunes didn’t have the version I had)
Killing in the Name Of -Rage Against the Machine 3:00 Rage ‘nff said. :~P
Jesus Walks -Kanye West 3:14 The most perfect running song ever.
Bleed American -Jimmy Eat World 3:01 Great beat!

Ramble On -Led Zeppelin

4:23 One of my fav Zep songs along with Going to CA.
Suddenly I See -KT Tunstall 3:22 Suddently I DO see! :)
Go, Go, Go -The Backyardigans 1:18 Every mom needs this song on their iPod!

Crazy Train -Ozzy Osbourne

4:56 I already told you, I’m crazy!
Eye of the Tiger -Survivor 4:04 If I timed it right I should be crossing the finish line to this song and that will TOTALLY crack me up!

Ok, I’m OUT! I’ll twitter from my cell if I can!

What a great mix! I love “Jesus Walks” as a work out song because it has such a good hard beat and I love the song “Crazy” as well. Some of the more unknown random songs are fun! Your a great mix maker! I’m sure you’ll do great, have fun!

Oh, a question for you! How do you get pass the “No headphones allowed” rule that race has?

    KUrunner

    April 5, 2009

Pretend that I typed past instead of pass.

KU – I just wear them and so does about 50% of the other runners. Every “race” I’ve run in had that rule. I think it only *really* matters if you *win*. KWIM?

Haha, Roni! I haven’t run a race large enough for the headphone rule yet, but I have a couple coming up that called for no headphones. I was worried someone would come and tackle me on the course if I had my ipod with me but I can’t run for 2 hours with just my thoughts.

And what? You don’t plan on winning the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile? *gasp* (Actually I have a friend from high school running it today who intends to win at least her age group. But she’s a freak of nature!)

Great job. I ran until I had my 2nd child and have been a serious power walker for 21 years! Yesterday I read that Runner’s World story about if you can walk you can run. Today we are on vacation inDC and out of my usual routine I started out running and RAN for 30 minutes! It felt great. I walked a half marathon last month. I think the Cherry Blossom may be a running goal for 2010. I am going to look for a great 5K very soon. I ran the first mile and a half of my half marathon and I’m sure I can do that without any problem! Wow I may be a runner again in my empty nest phase. I can run and you helped!

“Go, go, go, go, go you gotta go because you can go fast if you go too slow..” and not that song will be in my head the rest of the day!
However, i enjoy it, so thats ok :)
    Good luck!

I just found your blog. Your playlist alone is going to keep me reading! I love The Decemberists. O Valencia is a great song – I like Yankee Bayonet even better. Have you listened to their new album yet?

    Congrats on the big run!

I can really relate to your running addiction! I’ve hit all those walls as well. I’m getting ready to run a half marathon in a week and a half. Thanks for all the advise and encouragement on your blog!

Terri – Mu biggest problem when going from treadmill to street was speed. I haad a hard time controlling it. Once I realized I didn’t have to run fast I started to get the hang of it.

Let me warn you.. once you go outside its hard going back! :)

Kate – I’m keeping my food journal here… http://twitter.com/RonisFood Last night I had some Chinese food. I don’t really change my diet much just “more” of the same stuff as I burn about 100 calories a mile. I’m alsways starving the day after I run a few miles.

I love that you put up this mix! I too am a runner, I started on the Couch to 5k program and once I ran my first 5k I was hooked. I cried after I ran 10 miles for the first time and my first half marathon was amazing! I never thought I’d do it again but after a week I decided to make a full marathon my goal. I still need intermediate races to get me going and training. I’m working to balance exercise and eating right now and I just love your blog! I’m so happy I found it.
