Weekend Quote & My Running History & a 10 Mile Playlist
April 4, 2009
I can’t believe it’s here. When I sat down and planned my training for this years goals (all running related) the Cherry Blossom 10 miler seemed so far in the future. Not only distant but impossible. I really wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it. Now I’m confident. That didn’t happen overnight. I had to run through a few running walls to get here. It’s been quite a journey…
- First there was overcoming the "I’m not a runner" wall.
- Then there was the "I can’t run outside" wall.
- I then ran right through the "event" wall. That’s when I got hooked. The energy of an organized running event is SO contagious. After that first 5K I knew I wanted to do it again. I almost immediately signed up for a relay in the Baltimore Marathon.
- There was also the "running on vacation" wall.
- Then I broke the "40 minute" wall. Soon my next event… longest run at that point, 6 miles. Now I’m beyond hooked. I’m obsessed. I sign up for 2 big events in 2009.
- The "others see you as a runner" wall was a strange one for me.
- I even ran right through the "running in the cold" wall.
- The most recent wall was the "am I really an Athlete" wall. I really didn’t think I would be able to progress past 3-4 miles and now I’m able to run 9 miles, alone, in the rain.
"What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been"
-Grateful Dead.
NOOOO that’s not the Weekend Quote! I just needed to say it after looking back at my running progression! It really has been a long strange trip and guess what…. It’s NOT over! :)
Nope this weekends quote could not be a better one. Lauren sent it to me, she believes it’s from runners world…
If you can walk from the couch to the refrigerator, you are not too fat or too old or too slow to run.
LOVE IT! And take it from me, the girl who thought she couldn’t run, it’s SO true. I think too many people think they have to run so fast or so far to be "runners." If you can walk you can "run" all you need to do is find your own pace.
Alright this is getting longer then I have time for! I need to straighten up and get to bed. We are heading out at 5:30 to get to DC for the race. The toddler is TOTALLY psyched because he gets to ride "the train". :)
Here’s the mix I put together. Most of these are repeats from prior mixes. Links will open in iTunes.
| Song | Time | Notes/My Inspiration |

Oh, a question for you! How do you get pass the “No headphones allowed” rule that race has?
On April 5th, 2009 at 1:37 am KUrunner said:
Pretend that I typed past instead of pass.

KU – I just wear them and so does about 50% of the other runners. Every “race” I’ve run in had that rule. I think it only *really* matters if you *win*. KWIM?

Haha, Roni! I haven’t run a race large enough for the headphone rule yet, but I have a couple coming up that called for no headphones. I was worried someone would come and tackle me on the course if I had my ipod with me but I can’t run for 2 hours with just my thoughts.
And what? You don’t plan on winning the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile? *gasp* (Actually I have a friend from high school running it today who intends to win at least her age group. But she’s a freak of nature!)

Great job. I ran until I had my 2nd child and have been a serious power walker for 21 years! Yesterday I read that Runner’s World story about if you can walk you can run. Today we are on vacation inDC and out of my usual routine I started out running and RAN for 30 minutes! It felt great. I walked a half marathon last month. I think the Cherry Blossom may be a running goal for 2010. I am going to look for a great 5K very soon. I ran the first mile and a half of my half marathon and I’m sure I can do that without any problem! Wow I may be a runner again in my empty nest phase. I can run and you helped!

Terri – Mu biggest problem when going from treadmill to street was speed. I haad a hard time controlling it. Once I realized I didn’t have to run fast I started to get the hang of it.
Let me warn you.. once you go outside its hard going back! :)

Kate – I’m keeping my food journal here… http://twitter.com/RonisFood Last night I had some Chinese food. I don’t really change my diet much just “more” of the same stuff as I burn about 100 calories a mile. I’m alsways starving the day after I run a few miles.

I love that you put up this mix! I too am a runner, I started on the Couch to 5k program and once I ran my first 5k I was hooked. I cried after I ran 10 miles for the first time and my first half marathon was amazing! I never thought I’d do it again but after a week I decided to make a full marathon my goal. I still need intermediate races to get me going and training. I’m working to balance exercise and eating right now and I just love your blog! I’m so happy I found it.
