Weekend Quote: Perfection

Date November 2, 2008

This weekends quote comes from a friend I reunited with at a wedding. We were reminiscing, sharing a drink (ok, ok, many drinks) and having SO much fun. A few times our conversation turned a bit deeper, politics, love, you know, classic drunk talk. :~)

At one point he turns to the husband and I, and says…

"Perfection is found in the imperfections"

At the time, I believe we were talking about people and relationships. How nobody’s perfect but what you fall in love with is actually the imperfections. The whole person, good and bad. Hey… we WERE at a wedding, remember?

Anyway, this line struck me. Think about it, REALLY think about it. What makes us perfect is the fact that we aren’t perfect. When I share my most imperfect moments, like today when ate, ummmm about 2lbs of candy, or when I confessed my girl scout cookie incident, even when I declared my pizza addiction, you guys respond with a great big giant "Thank You". I receive message after message from people that are grateful I shared my imperfections. Why? Well, these are the moments, that make me, me. That make me real.

How many times do we beat ourselves up for not being perfect? For being too short? too fat? having cellulite? small breasts? NOT looking like some airbrushed model in a magazine? Or how may times do you get depressed about eating too much? then eat more because of it? (guilty as charged)

So as I go to bed with a stomach full of Twix and 3 Musketeer bars, I take comfort in the fact that I am NOT perfect. Or, wait, I AM perfect because I’m imperfect! … Whatever! :~) Either way, tomorrow is a new day and I’m ready to face it making the best decisions I can.

  1. I am guilty for all of the above and more. I am guilty right now of visiting the halloween candy “one more time” this evening. I am mad at myself. Stopping the cycle is the key and allowing ourself leeway is huge.

    Hope the wedding was fun!

Thanks for reminding us that an imperfect day is not the end of the world! Tomorrow can and will be better.

  3. P.S. Is chocolate not THE worst
    (but THE best)
    (sugar clearly affects brain functioning.)

  4. I ate 4 Points worth of Halloween candy today … since I’m only supposed to have 25 Points a day, that’s way too large a proportion on wasted calories!

Darn Mini-Clark bars and York Peppermint Pumpkins! At least they’re just 1 Point apiece.

  5. Hey you counted!! No Lie, I ate about 15 points worth! LOL But I’m done. :~)

  6. Thank goodness our German neighborhood does not trick or treat. We do not have a need to purchase the candy yet.

  7. Darn those stupid quality street chocolates. I did ask the boyfriend to get sweets rather than chocolates for the trick or treaters but NOOOO he comes back with a huge big box of chocolates. Adn we had ONE trick or treater. So instead I ate the whole lot. I am back on track today and am trying to limit the damage but boy do I understand where you are coming from. When it comes to chocolate I have no self control

  8. Wow! Roni, I am so certain you are blessed with that elusive third eye. Everytime I am down about something, YOU tend to nail it right on the head and sweep it out the door. THANK YOU! I was really down on myself for all the candy I ate over the last two days. I set myself back a pound or two and was really frustrated…but your quote is so right on! we are all perfect in our imperfections! I am a real, live human with faults to my eyebrows…but every day is a new day and I CAN achieve my goals.

Thanks, Roni….for being you as no one else could be!

  9. I just love that quote. And welcome back we missed you!

  10. Reminds me of a quote from a speaker at a company meeting many moons ago. He said the perfection isn’t so much about being “flawless” as about being complete.

  11. You hit the nail on the head! If we were perfect all the time we would not be perfect. It’s all the bad days that make the good days GREAT!

    thanks Roni!

  12. Great post Roni! I also didn’t have such a good weekend. And although I am disappointed with myself, we just have to start fresh and not dwell on it. I had a very unfortunate 3am visit to IHOP after going out on Halloween…so not good.

I agree that there is lots of perfection in imperfection. I like you more because of your honesty on your blogs like many of the other readers.

  13. I was suffering from PMS right up to Hallowween….ughh…..so I did my damage before the big trick or treat ….
Saturday morning I put all my 6yr old’s candy in ziplocs and hid them in a big tin…..
Told my son where they were and that he could eat it, but for the FIRST time EVER, I didn’t tease myself by walking past it ALL DAY LONG…MINUTE BY MINUTE….taking a piece every time.
Its about change…sometimes I fail miserably, sometimes I get it, and when I DO get it?…..gotta share the small victories!

  14. Roni,
Now you have hit the nail on the head. The botox, huge lipped hollywood women make me physically ill.. Yes, I would like to look the best I can for my age and be as healthy as I can, but don’t take away what makes me, me. I have a rather large of strawberry birth mark on my left arm/hand. I would never dream of removing it. The imperfections are just perfect!

  15. Roni, I think you have a very wise friend and interpreted his sentence very well, and two things and two persons came to my mind:

    1. Julie Andrews and Susan Sarandon. They might have had small things done but they look their age AND great! And not like normed dolls whom you wouldn’t recognize. They look like they have a personality and great spirit.

    2. Those moments when you actually could smack yourself for having eaten that candy or fast food, but then you notice you feel really great, you won’t drop dead, and you have made so many positive changes happen in your life already that you can afford to enjoy your belly full of candy. Because you know it does not mean candy will become a daily food group for you.

    3. The line of that Bon Jovi song, “Welcome to wherever you are, this is your life, you’ve made it this far” always makes me feel perfect and thankful because it makes me realize that I have already gone for a long walk and that I have generally done a good job so far. No matter how many imperfections I have, I became 31 this year, and hopefully I will become 32 and even much much older. And the song makes me feel incredibly sappy even when I just think about it. ;.9

    Love,
    Nina

  16. Indeed, so true.

I have come back to your site once again as I start to fine tune my own imperfections yet again. Gonna try to get in front of the holiday eating etc this year and had to come figure out what my current daily point allotment is.

I will start doing video weigh ins again I think too as those are soooooo motivating. Still down 20 lbs from my high this time last year but up nearly 20 from my low/goal.

thanks for keeping this site active and alive. It’s been a beacon for me for sure.

  17. Okay, I’m inspired to start losing again. Rather, I’m inspired to start trying to lose again. I am imperfect, never will be perfect, but who cares. I’d rather be authentic with all the little imperfections than perfect and bland. :)

  18. Great quote Roni!! Thanks for sharing! The quote rings true…..what a much better mindset we would have if we could all fully embrace the quote into our daily lives!

  19. The phrase I’ve had dancing around in my head this week is: “Progress not perfection” . . . so reading this post today was very timely!
