What's Cooking in my kitchen?

I've recently discovered the amazing combination of cheese and dried cherries. I know, it sounds weird, but seriously… good! The other day I smeared some Laughing Cow Light Swiss on Cucumber slices and then topped with a cherry. It was a fun, sweet twist on standard cheese and crackers. Well, cheese [...] -
If I was a good blogger this idea would have been published BEFORE the Super Bowl not during it. I made these today to have a little fun. Surprisingly, The Husband liked them even though he didn't eat more than one. Why? Because he's strange like [...] -
If you read my weight loss blog you know I'm battling a bit of back and neck pain right now. I'm starting to feel a little better but those first few days where rough. Being the head chef of the household, this meant we ordered in a couple of times. I'm [...] -
I'm LOVING Pinterest! I can just scroll all day long looking at food photo after food photo. I wish I had more time to peruse! (I'm RoniNoone there by the way?) The other day I pinned a Portabello Mushroom pizza and was immediately inspired. It's such a simple idea and so light. [...] -
The other day I found myself craving an Orange Julius. Are they as popular as I think they are? Growing up we had an Orange Julius at our local mall. It was always a treat for us at the end of a family shopping trip. Once I was old enough to be [...] -
So I'm a little breakfast nutty at the moment. Little Bean LOVES eggs and I find myself cooking them more and more. This morning I decided to go super light (after last nights chocolate overload) and it was totally satisfying for just over 100 calories! The trick to making [...] -
A few weeks ago I saw Chef Michael Simon make a raw kale salad on The Chew. He sliced beets up real thin and cut the kale into ribbons. Then made a vinaigrette out of red wine vinegar and olive oil. I was immediately intrigued. So far I've only [...] -
I've had this idea for a quick creamy chicken dish for a few days now. It was time to give it a shot. The whole family LOVED it. I'm not joking. The only complaint came from Little Guy who declared his hate of mushrooms yet again BUT he ate everything around them. Fine [...] -
I made this on a total whim yesterday as I had leftover avocado after feeding the baby and leftover Spaghetti squash cooked from the weekend. I roasted the squash to serve with my Chicken tips instead of potatoes and it was AMAZING! Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. So I'm sitting there staring [...] -
It's post holiday season. You know what that means? Leftover Crescent rolls to experiment with! Every year for Thanksgiving I buy a few canisters. It's the only time I do as I can't be trusted around them. Let's just say I'd beat you in the How-Many-Crescent-Rolls-Can-You-Eat-In-One-Sitting game and leave [...] -
Last week the kids and I tried parsnips for the first time and I've made them 3 times since. I wanted to figure out the best way to roast them. Yeah, that's it, the best way to roast them. You'll buy that right? Right? The truth is, I'm obsessed. I found myself [...] -
Yesterday just felt like a good day to stuff an acorn squash. I had one sitting on my counter for quite some time and it was just begging to be cooked. Since both husband and child don't like it I made a solo meal just for me and, well, it was DELICIOUS! [...] -
I bought a fennel bulb on a whim for the holidays not knowing quite what I would do with it. Of course I forgot about until yesterday when I was rummaging through the fridge trying to figure out what I wanted to make for breakfast. I pulled it out and stared [...] -
I probably should have warned you I was taking a holiday hiatus. I've been soaking up every moment of family time imaginable these last few days, leaving no time for anything else. Not even blogging! Shocking I know. ;) So I return not with a new recipe, per se, but to [...] -
Here's a quick idea for when you find yourself with a spaghetti squash but don't quite know what to do with it. Come on. Admit it. That's happened to you too. It's sure happened to me! I roasted this squash on Sunday... [...] -
I'm not sure if this will be a crowd pleaser, but I liked it and thought I'd share in hopes it inspires you to have some fun with kale. I loved the combination of sweet pear, earthy kale, salty bacon bits and creamy hummus. The only issue with the wrap was [...] -
I'm going on day 2 of counting Weight Watcher Points and I'm already inspired to come up with light, healthy meals for myself. It's like I needed the constraint of points to motivate me. Isn't that weird? Anyway, all morning I was brainstorming what to make for lunch. I wanted something flavorful [...] -
I have a friend who patiently cleaned, peeled and cubed a fresh pumpkin and then selflessly gave me some. Scratch that, a TON! I would have never even thought of doing something like that! But now that I have it in my fridge the ideas are flowing. First, I roasted some [...] -
CHRISTMAS COOKIES! YAY! Sorry. I'm so excited! Little Guy and I had tons of fun making and decorating cookies today. It may just be my favorite part of the holiday season. I loved it when I was a kid and now I get to do it with my own kids. [...] -
This may be my simplest idea yet, but it was so tasty and satisfying I had to share. Plus you guys know I'm a Laughing Cow Community Leader so I'm all about sharing fun ways to use their products. You guys may also know how I feel about pausing and making [...] -
I made this on Thursday. THURSDAY! I hate when I can't post something I've eaten within 24 hours. It just bugs me. Not sure why, it really doesn't matter when I post it, does it? Anyway, I did whip this up to cure a pizza craving and I couldn't be happier. [...] -
It's been awhile since I jazzed up a tilapia fillet. I've breaded them before, coated them in oats, flavored them like one of my favorite drinks and topped them with a fun salsa. It was time to bring nuts into the party. You are going to think I'm crazy but I've [...] -
Fun leftover turkey idea #2! Click here for leftover turkey idea #1. I had a little Gouda leftover from this years Harvest Salad and decided to put all the same flavors from the salad into a quesadilla. I just can't get enough of the smokey gouda/sweet craisin combo. It goes [...] -
It's the day after Thanksgiving and my refrigerator ROCKS! I have leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, roasted Brussels Sprouts, a bunch of veggies and tons of miscellaneous fun stuff. I've already made stock from the bones (like this) and my first batch of soup, Classic Turkey Noodle. I hope to share [...] -
I'm so sorry I've been slacking in the Thanksgiving recipe department. I feel like a bad food blogger. Everyone else is posting festive ideas and here I've gone missing for a few days. Maybe it's because I'm not doing anything special for Turkey day. I finally got my holiday cooking [...]

i think turtle-necks make people look distinguished :-p
What a great way to say…. OLD! LMAO!!
Hey, the cozier the better. I just found out I was doing my cardio with my heart rate way above the fat burning heart rate. So, I was getting a great burn but was burning off my hard earned muscle.
I also found that I need to be building muscle to help boost my metabolism. Random fact…Did you know that 10 lbs of muscle burns 500-750 calories a day even when It’s not being used. Bring on the muscle.
No, turtlenecks are in fashion this fall! You’re totally in style!
I am a little wary of blanket health recommendations, just because individual difference is a huge factor. I know that the recommendations come from solid research, but even the people who participate in the studies vary and the recommendation is just an average. You really have to experiment to find your own optimum activity level, in my opinion anyway!
2 hours? Im tired just reading it :)
cant wait till mine is in preschool. 45 min of working out and 1hr 15 of trash tv perhaps :)
and yes…you ARE stylin.
have a great weekend
Hey, Miz, maybe you could get one of those bicycle generators and have your workout and your TV, too? Only half kidding…we saw one of those on Ruff Ruffman (one of our kids’ favorite TV shows) and were intrigued ourselves…
Roni,,What a great video, you are inspiring so many..and I am one of the oldies your inspiring..I have so much respect for what your doing..its so refreshing to bond with such a truly caring person, today many get too busy and caught up in non-meaningful things..what your doing for all of us is so appreciated..THANK YOU!
Hey Roni!!! Like I’ve said so many times, you are my inspiration! :) Thank you for all your tips and guidance.
I’m 25 just so you know! I think I would have related to you at pretty much any age! I tell all my friends about your site, and one of them (23 years old) said you were the next Oprah!
Great video! And I like the theme-idea, especially concering exercise, motivation etc. Maybe you could alternate free sessions and theme sessions. And I totally agree on taking it slow. Change one habit at a time until it has changed properly, then move on to the next one. Exercise is more about health than it is about weight loss, you will feel fitter soon, even if you are still overweight. And note: Weight lifting might add one pound or another in the beginning, so don’t let that scare you! It really also depends on the type of exercise you are doing.
And by the way, I am murdering the German language right now. One of my colleagues just said to me, “You know that word doesn’t exist, right?” She really sounded concerned. :D
Love,
Nina
Anyone out there that thinks they have to lose weight in order to exercise – I started exercising 6 mos before I started cleaning up my food.
The only down side to this is that I never got on a scale until I started working on my food – so I have no idea what I lost for the first 6 mos nor do I know what my heightest weight was.
The upside – is that my skin tightened as I lost – no lose skin anywhere. Wrinkly belly – but at 47 with 3 kids – that might have happened anyway.
Vickie – I have a friend who’s like that as well. She started exercising before dieting. That was her “first thing” that snowballed. For me it was the food.
I’m glad you brought that up as I think people need to realize they can start by doing what’s right for them. My only advice is not to do it all at first as to not get overwhelmed.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I appreciate the kind words. Oh! and you guys crack me up! Oprah?!? HA!
Hi Roni, thanks for answering my question! I have lost about 4 pounds. But, I feel like I have lots some inches. My clothes fit MUCH better.
I did weight watchers for about 3 weeks then just stuck to exercising. At one point I was running 5 days a week and now since its SO cold its harder for me to get out at night after work so I try to do at least 3 days. I am running longer than I ever had.
Which for me is a big deal since I was the girl in school who would be the last kid running the mile run in PE. It would take me like 25 minutes and I would have this horrible side pain. ha ha. I feel so much better after a run. It really helps if I have had a stressful day at work.. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question. I love your site and check it daily!
One more question Roni, when you go running do u run the whole time never having to stop? I just can’t seem to do that. I can’t even make it a full mile without stopping for a few seconds to catch my breath then start back up. Maybe I am just slow. I just can imgaining running 4 miles strait! Maybe one day! :)
it is not the turtle neck, it is the combination with the gray one. If it were only the white turtle neck or a black turtle neck you wouldn’t have this sensation. I love turtle necks! You are great!
I just got 5 pounds… and I am struggling to get back counting points and exercising…btw, i used to be a dancer, so i do love ( and have to) exercise, otherwise I get a bit depressed. That’s how it works with me. Anyway, I just need to put my efforts in those 5 lbs.
Have a nice weekend.
great video Roni :) It is nice to know the losing weight is possible no matter what avenue you take :)
Ha Roni, first you cracked me up with the turtleneck comment. I was actually dismayed for a brief minute! See, at 53, we think the turtleneck makes us look younger, but then to realize that to younger people it is not fooling them at all–they think it makes us look older (which hopefully is just the age we really are…)
Anyways, yes, Roni, at my advanced age of 53(LOL,) you are an inspiration to me also. I didn’t find you until I had lost my weight, but you are an inspiration to keep going, to try new foods, to challenge myself with new and harder exercises!
I am where you were 3 years ago. I went from 242 down to 180 since last april 15th. I did it on Weight Watchers core plan and online. I have never been to a WW Meeting. I get all my inspiration from the WW Website and sites like this one. I have been on maintainence for the past month and I just started a gym 3 weeks ago. I lost all my weight before I exercised. I wanted to let you know that I am in my sixties. I am enjoying being in this new body and hope to stay this way. I will continue to journal food. I think that it is key.
Hi Roni,
You should have a post where “Roni followers” can get to know each other… there are probably some of us who live in the same cities and could workout together. Just a thought…
Amy
Amy – I do! It’s called BlogToLose! http://blogtolose.com
I built that community for those that want to connect and support each other, most of them are my readers. It’s how it started!
Check it out! Let me know what you think.
Fitness Surfer….GREAT POINT. There is a point where you can burn muscle and I didn’t know that either until I heard about it and looked it up online. Those are things you don’t hear often, but they can make a huge difference.
Leia – I do! I can’t believe it either but I was able to run the 6 mile relay without stopping. It took months to get to that point and sometimes I need to slow down just to run 2 now. For me, if I’m at the right pace, it’s all mental and sometimes I lose that battle. :~)
You’ll get there! It’s amazing how our bodies and minds progress!
The ticket for me was to go completely off of sugar and caffeinated sodas. I was pretty hooked on Dr Pepper, but I did not think I was actually drinking much. When I got off my once a day “treat”, the exercise I was already doing suddenly started to make a difference. It was the combination that really worked for me!
