Roni-
Good post. I feel the same way about the "guidelines" also about the core foods. I don't think I would have been successful with flex if I didn't eat mostly core foods. Those are the foods that satisfy for low pts. I still count points. I think it was you that had a post once that called this way of eating "flore".
You are like my AA for maintenance. Thanks for all you do.

Roni,

I love your video posts, but this one especially since I am 9 weeks pregnant and trying to watch my weight gain during pregnancy. While I do no have the fertility or insulin problems Amy does, I am still 70 pounds overweight, even after loosing over 50 pounds pre-pregnancy with Weight Watchers. Since I'm still overweight, my doctor suggested I only gain 10 pounds throughout my pregnancy. When we discussed WW and pregnancy, he suggested following the maintenance part of the program, so I added 4 points to my daily allowance. I was tracking and doing really well until the morning sickness set in. Now I'm lucky I can keep anything down, so I'm not really tracking right now. (Do you have to count the points if you puke it up?) I still go to meetings and will continue to do so until they kick me out, so for now what they don't know won't hurt them. When the morning sickness subsides (please God!) and cravings set in, I will definitely start tracking again, since it will be hard not to overeat when I'm feeling better. This is my plan for now and hopefully it will work and it might work for others in a similar situation! Wish me luck!

I did core and was successful with a loss of like 15 pounds...but I found my alternative guilty pleasures while on core. You are allowed to eat avocados...so I did. I would have them with tomatoes, onions, or spend a point or two and eat part of one with a tortilla. I enjoyed core but then again I had to cook so much more than I do now. I gained back my 15 (and then some) pounds and ended up back on Flex. I think the points hold me a little more accountable. I have been on flex for a while this time and I am not seeing the losses I really want...so I am pondering Core again.

Also I wanted to add that while I was on core and I would skip my oils I would find that my skin on my face always seemed drier. I actually had to start using a moisturizer to battle the dry skin. I am back on flex and I do not have the same problems.

Eating well while pregnant... Now there's a question I can get behind, and in a major way. When I got pregnant (after several years of trying, so I can relate to THAT, too) I weighed in at 227 pounds and had gestational diabetes.

The doctor told me that he didn't want me to gain ANY weight during the pregnancy and limited me to an 1800 calorie day. I said to him "So, what you're saying is you want me to lose 30 pounds in the next 8 months." "Yeah, pretty much."

Well, I went a bit beyond that. I stuck to my diabetic diet strictly and injected myself with insulin twice a day (I won't get into how uncomfortable giving yourself a shot in the stomach is when you can't see past the baby bump!) and was pretty much scared to death the entire time I was pregnant. I was told I would have a monster sized child - most GD babies are at least 9 pounds! While I was pregnant, it was wonderful motivation to stick to an eating plan. I had to do this because it wasn't just good for me, but it was for my baby, who I wanted so desperately. The whole time I was pregnant, I had two desserts. The Whole Time. (I might add my best friend was 2 months more pregnant than I was, and while it was nice to share the experience with someone, she was not restricted on what she ate, gained at least 50 pounds, and I wanted to stab her with an ice pick at times when she'd come over, eat two desserts and "poor poor you" in my direction a few times) Pregnancy can be fun and homicidal that way sometimes.

Anyway, sticking to that diet, which included 2 meats, 2 dairy, 4 vegetables, 2 fruits, and 5 grain servings per day, I not only didn't gain weight, but the day before I went into labor, weighed in at 214 pounds!

The week after my daughter was born, I stepped on a scale and was 188. And, by the way, my daughter was mostly healthy (a little jaundiced, but that's not abnormal) and a reasonable weight at 7 pounds, 7 ounces.

I know everyone jumps up and down about pregnant women and their health and no no no dieting, but really, if you've already got the weight to lose and you're taking a prenatal vitamin, there's NOTHING wrong with losing a few pounds. And being pregnant is certainly not license to eat any bit of junk that you feel like. I mean, it's not just your body that you're abusing when you eat 2 back to back ice creams, it's your child's body as well. Their growing internal organs have to process everything you eat!
