What one thing can you do?
August 19, 2008
We’ve been talking a lot about starting slow and making small changes to combat the overwhelming feelings of changing your lifestyle. So this weeks question is simple…
What one thing can you do this week to live a healthier life and help you reach your weight loss goals?
And yes I want you to commit to this one thing starting today, a Wednesday. Not Sunday, not Monday, but the moment you read this your “week” begins.
Me? Well starting today, NO MORE NIGHT TIME SNACKING! It’s KILLING ME! ;~) And I’m not talking denying myself something when I’m hungry. I’m talking about the ‘mindless eating because it’s there’ snacking. The ‘grab a handful of whatever the husband is having’ snacking and worst of all the ‘eating to stay awake’ snacking. I’m committing to stopping the nighttime habit this week.
How about you? What one thing will you do?

roni, thank you for this post. i have been struggling lately and every monday i try to start fresh and your QOTW just made me realize that even though this week has started out a bit rocky i have not blown it, and tomorrow is another day, another chance, another good choice just waiting to be made. my commitment to myself this week is to take one day at a time, once choice at a time ( in hopes of curbing my tendency to think in all or nothing terms.) thanks!

I am going to add more intensity to my workouts. I have been workout cruising for a few weeks now and it’s time to kick it up a notch and let the heart work harder as the sweat pours ;)

Haha your video today made me so sad ’cause I drink so much diet soda! It’s my biggest dietary vice (which really isn’t so bad, but it’s still unhealthy). So my step in the right direction is to drink more water, as I haven’t been getting enough of it lately.
Keep up the good work! And the photos of the ham/sweet potatoes were so pretty! (is that a nerdy thing to say? oh well lol)

I will take a different route back from lunch, one which doesn’t take me past a vending machine! I swear they call out to me … but i I can’t see it or hear it, I should be ok!

How did you read my mind? I was just thinking that I needed to do something to jump start myself again and not wait until “next” Sunday like I usually do. LOL
I’m going to eat my 3 meals and not just munch on snacks. That is what sets me up for late-night eating. No more grabbing a cracker and piece of cheese while heading to the laundry room!

I am going to start journaling again. I made lifetime last year, but have maintained my total weightloss for about three years now. I work out harder then ever now and I love that and I continue to eat a healthy balanced diet. I do however need to start journaling again. First of all I miss journaling. I like to see what I have eaten for the day and where did I have tough spots. Second of all it encourages me to strive to reach my 8HG and at the end of the day I am happy to see in written form all of the good choices I made for my body.

Not weigh myself this week. My goal is to wait until September 1. Because I’m not weighing myself, I’m focusing on good behavior (exercising and eating well) instead.

Call me a coward because this one is too easy. I am going to stop eating “bad” food that I don’t like! Stuff like pizza, yellow cake, and that kind of food. I usually eat these things to be polite because someone offers it, but I really don’t need it.

I am going to get at least eight hours of sleep a night, starting tonight. I’m a teacher and it’s easy to stay up late getting stuff done. Not any more. If it doesn’t get done, it doesn’t get done. I’ll deal with it tomorrow!

I have the worst nighttime eating problem. It’s totally habit too. Maybe a little emotion, but it so engrained in my routine that I feel like something is missing without a nibble or too late at night.
So this is the best solution I have, before you get home–especially if you are out late at dinner, drinks or a movie, etc.–visualize walking in the door going straight to the bathroom, brushing, flossing and rinsing with listerine. Then waking up feeling light and empty. I go through this on the subway, on the walk to my building and in the elevator.
It’s almost embarassing that I need this must visualization, like I have no control. But I guess it’s better to feel out of control, summoning control before hand, than guilty, bloated and out of control after a huge bowl or cereal or ice cream that I wasn’t hungry for anyways, right?

I am committing to 2 things…
My “work thing” is to STAY OUT OF THE CANDY JARS AROUND THE OFFICE!!!! I don’t need the M&Ms, Mini Candy Bars, etc. and the little things add up to points, they are not “free”!
My “home thing” is to execize 3 nights a week and at least one weekend day.
No m&m’s for me today and I will take a walk tonight!
Thanks Roni- I needed to write this down and commit!

It is interesting your chose this as this weeks QOTW. I went to my WW meeting yesterday and we discussed what could be done in the short term (and I chose THIS WEEK) to help us attain a short term goal. For me, it is journaling for 7 days straight. Included in this - was writing in my blog for 7 days straight too…
btw - I TOTALLY understand your night time snacking cunundrum. I too tend to snack just because the husband has gotten a bowl of “whatever” - or becasue I figure it is too early to go to bed… Why is it, that now that I am making bedtimes for my child I can’t stick to a bedtime for myself? ;-)
Thanks Roni!

I totally agree about mindless eating. But I like evening snacking. It’s a good time to get a serving of carrot sticks, or a small handful of nuts, and a nice cup of (antioxidant) cocoa. After the kids have gone to bed.

One thing I can do to focus on a healthy lifestyle is to eat even more fruits and vegetables (which I already eat an insane amount). I’ve been trying to stay away from packaged snacks and eat as close to earth as possible.

Hey Roni,
You always ask such great questions and the right time!!!! I too have been doing the mindless snacking to stay awake. Last night it was watching RERUNS of the Soprano’s I mean I think I have seen them all at least 3 times and yet I watch, eyes half shut eating light popcorn!!!! I will jump on the wagon with you Roni on this one. Good luck to you and I will think of you tonight when we both are NOT snacking just for the sake of snacking

Great question!
My goal this week?
To really be REAL and honest about what I’m actually eating. Every bite will be logged. When the week’s over, I want to look at my eating habits with a very objective eye.
Thanks for this great chance to really look inside. Appreciate it!

Hi Roni!
What a great incentive!
I agree with you on the night time snacking. That would be my thing to change aswell. I get myself in trouble all the time by going over my points in the evening after I put my little one to bed. It’s kind of like, this is my time to relax and enjoy some tv time. I need to make myself a nice cup of herbal tea instead. Hope I can do it!
Thanks Roni, you are so inspiring. I keep up with your blogs all the time and I LOVE your video q & a sessions! You give such great advice!

I am also going to copy what you said, night time eating. I am just ridiculous! I will eat my dinner, and be so full that my stomach is hurting, yet I will continue to eat whatever is in site, a few strawberries, handful of raisins, few more berries, etc. I am in no way even close to hungry, but just can’t seem to stop. So, starting tonight, no mindless stuffing my face. Here’s to a great week…starting on a Wednesday :)

Thanks for this because I need to get back on track after 3 weeks of my parent’s being here (and Lord knows it is INCREDIBLY easy to go back to my horrible eating habits when I am around them - after all, I grew up eating too much food and unhealthy food to boot around them)!
So my one thing is I will stay OP and go to the gym at least three times this week and then do at least another form of activity twice more this week.
Good luck to everyone keeping their commitment!

Hi Roni,
I just discovered your site this week, along with starting a one-week trial of WW Online, and my goal this week would be to keep up with my food tracking online for one week. If I can do that, I’m diving in with the plan online, instead of my usual paper & pencil slipping into leniency and ultimate going-off of the program. This is my millionth time on WW, and I tend to switch back and forth with my hubby from SB to WW. I’m planning on staying on for the long haul now. I have 31 lbs to lose to get to my healthy weight, and maybe a little more after that.
I’m enjoying your food videos, as I love to cook. Thanks for the great ideas, and I love the site! You’re an inspiration.

Thanks, Roni - I love this question too! #1 I will stop the negative talk that flows through me when I “mess up” a little - it starts a terrible, unhealthy cycle. #2 I will stay out of the office snacks this week (one day at a time, right?) It is amazing how much food is around, and I will eat it just “because” - mindless and then cycles me through to #1. Make sense? Anyway - I WILL STAY AWAY FROM OFFICE EXTRAS!!! AAGGHHH!! I can do it! :o)

I am going to drink more water! My office has a machine that dispenses crushed ice and water. I bought a water bottle and I have been filling it at work instead of getting soda from the vending machine. I slacked off the last few days but I’m getting back to it.

Hi Roni,
I’m new to the site; I’ve been on WW since 5/28 and have lost 22.2 pounds so far. My response to the QOTW is: My goal is to get at least 2 AP every day. I will walk during my lunch break or in the evening if I’m not able to work out in the morning. An additional goal will be to focus my energy on my next short-term goals: 25 pounds, 30 pounds and then my 2nd 10% goal at 35 pounds. Looking at my final goal weight is too overwhelming at this point. I need to stay positive and confident that I will be successful! Thanks for your site!

I’ve been reading a lot about the benefits of green tea: it may increase metabolism and reduce appetite. We have heard of so many different foods, vitamins, and minerals hyped as weight loss aids–grapefruit , dairy, hoodia, Cr,etc–it is hard to buy into everything. But what the heck, it can’t hurt to try it. I’ll get more water, cut back on diet soda, count as a no calorie snack, and maybe it will help. My goal is to drink 3 -5 cups of green tea a day. I’ll let you know if it seems to work.
