Question of the weekThis weeks question comes from my recent post, The Choice for Plastic Surgery after Weight Loss. In the article I gave my reason for choosing to have plastic surgery after weight loss and I talked about how hard of a decision it was for me to make.

Most comments were from those who supported my decision and they shared their views on the plastic surgery issue. However, those who had a different point of view, and felt that surgery is not the answer, got the impression they weren’t able to contribute. Many saw the anti-surgery comments as negative and, in essence, unsupportive of my decision.

This is partially my fault as I made the post very personal. In reality this blog is really a personal journal made public so sometimes I just vent or rationalize for myself while letting others in. That sometimes doesn’t make a good forum for healthy debate.

I’m not naive, I don’t think everyone thinks my decision was the right one, but as I said in my original post, “My decision is one that not all will agree with but in the end it’s mine to make.”

That being said, I thought it would be beneficial to actually hear what peoples position are on plastic surgery without it being a supportive/unsupportive issue of my decision.

So….

How do you feel about plastic surgery after a significant weight loss? Would you have surgery if you had the means?

Let’s try to keep it nice. I won’t take it personally, if you won’t. :~)

Hey Roni – I’m new to reading your site. I have had 2 kids, & lost 50 lbs. Just earlier this year I got a breast augmentation. One of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. Now I’m considering another procedure for my lower belly area. I guess the combo of 2 c-setions and fatloss have just taken it’s toll on my lower belly (I refer to it as my nemisis). I look fine in clothes, so I am having trouble deciding if it’s worth it(money wise), but dang it, I wanna look good nekkid, lol.
So shoot yes I think if it’s something you wanna do, you go girl.

Yes, I would do it and have already done it. I plan to have a tummy tuck after I have one more kid, and will likely have the boobs redone at some point. Even better than the boob job, though, was the lipo I had done along the tops of my hips. All my young adult life, I was terribly embarrassed about my “big hips.” In my early 20′s, I put on some weight and a fatty “shelf” developed there – clothing would never lay right because of the shelf. Later, when I lost weight and began working out, I got my body fat down to 16% and was in the best shape of my life – except for the shelf. No amount of working out or starving myself was going to make that go away so I had it sucked out. My whole body silhouette changed – I looked normal, finally. And even after gaining a bunch of weight and losing it again, the shelf has never reappeared. So – I have had only positive experiences with plastic surgery but I agree with everyone above that it is imperative to DO YOUR HOMEWORK and check doctors out very well. People should always inform themselves as much as possible and with the internet now, it is a lot easier. I can’t wait to hear all about your results!!

I so would and have. I had liposuction on my thighs about 7 years ago and it was the best thing I did for MYSELF. It wasn’t about what other people saw it was about what I saw. Everytime I looked in the mirror all I could see were my leg jowels. I would wear nylons under sweatpants. Even though I am still “chunky” doing that for myself made a huge difference in how I felt about me! You go girl! Lorri

    Hi Roni,

Thank you for sharing your story about your plastic surgery/tummy tuck!
    Truly inspiring!
I was born with a “budda belly” & no amount of crunches & salt-free food/drink would solve it. Even at my thinnest, the stubborn belly fat was still there. So, I am taking steps to getting one (and perhaps additional procedures in other stubborn areas) within the next couple of months.

Plastic surgery may not be for everyone. But for myself, if one has the means & wants to improve the way they look & feel about themselves- then go for it!!!
    Everyone deserves to be happy.
So, best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery! Looking forward to seeing your progress.

You bet your sweet bippy! Actually when I reach goal, I’ll be running to our awesome plastic surgeon! I really hate to be rude…but mud wraps? If all it took was mud wraps, I’d be outside doing a rain dance right now. I don’t want to sound “plastic surgery happy”, but seriously, if I had a tail or an extra arm…I’d have it removed. I feel the same way about a post baby, overweight by 60lbs, hanging flap of extra skin at my midsection. It is unsightly, unhygenic and if anyone needs a medical reason, extra flab at the midsection is a good hiding place for ovarian cancer. An early sign of ovarian cancer is abdominal distention and if you couldn’t possibly tell if your abdomen is distended, you could miss this sign.*sigh* Thanks for giving me the soap box for a moment.

YES! YES! YES! If I had the money and time, I would be scheduling an appointment tomorrow for a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, lipo, a minor face lift and botox! Let’s not forget about braces and laser eye surgery!

After 3 children and breastfeeding, my body is not exactly the same as it was when I was in my early 20′s.

I have lost the weight and I can fit into a size 4, but I have extra skin and new bumps in places that never had bumps. Even after my 3rd child, I have new bumps.

Plastic Surgery is a personal choice and someday, I hope to get some work done!

I have been thinking about a Tummy Tuck for the past year or so. I had two babies in 15 months so I am a great candidate for one. However, what holds me back is a few things, risk is one. But more importantly I often think of how I would explain it to my two girls. I think if they were boys it would be different. Even at the ages 2 & 3 I try to teach them about good health and exercise. They think mommy works out and eats well not to lose weight but to get stronger and to run faster. I don’t know how I would explain my surgery/recovery and long term scarring. When I think of how sensitive growing minds can be I just say, “I am ok with my mud flap”. But I do go back and forth. Just the other night I told my husband that I wanted one at the end of the year…LOL

  9. Later Gator says:

The only surgery I would seriously consider is a breast lift, but I think I’d hold off until after kids. I’m a 38DDD and I’m only 27 and I feel like they’re already sagging.

  10. Helen says:

I posted previously that I had a consult, and decided against surgery, even though I can afford it. For me, the scars and the riskiness of an in-patient procedure aren’t worth the improvement I’d see. The surgeon agreed that even with the amount of my weight loss (85 lbs) and age (44), I was doing pretty well in terms of the loose skin and the scars probably wouldn’t be a good enough trade-off. She did say, though, any of her patients that have lost over 100 lbs haven’t felt thin until they’ve had surgery.

I have a friend that’s recently lost 175 lbs (yes, 175 lbs, I’m so proud of her! She did Jenny Craig), and even though she knows surgery would certainly help her appearance, she’s decided against it for now–the fear of surgery is too much for her, even though her insurance would cover most of it.

I want a tummy tuck when I’m at goal. I also want a breast lift (no implants) and a thighplasty. I have to wait until my son graduates from college, so that gives me plenty of time to get to goal and maintain for at least 2 years before I start saving the money.

I have no beef with plastic surgery. I come from a long line of vain people. My dad even had a brow lift a few years before he died. I was proud of him for it! It’s not for everyone, but I am totally for it.

  13. Mary says:

I would. My body will not have any other way to fully recover from the abuse I have put it through, so if I can afford it I will definitely do it. However, its very unlikely I will be able to afford it any time soon.

I say ‘who cares?’ you are the one living w/it. I told my husband a few years ago that for my 40th I want new breasts! and whether I have lost all of the weight I want to by then I am getting new breasts if it kills me. I have great ones now I just want them to stand up and in the right direction :). Life is too short to not to live life to the fullest!

  16. Amanda Daybyday says:

It’s not my first choice…but I’m definitely open to it. Now that I’m 80lbs into my 100lbs to lose, I’m hating my body without clothes. I keep hoping the skin will miraculously firm up, but I know it’s not likely. My husband would support it, but much of my family would look down on it. So, it’s not in my immediate future…but I’m definitely not ruling it out.

  17. aMKgal says:

As I am losing weight using good products and doing ab workouts have helped I think it is a lot harder to do it if you haven’t done it along the way I have been using Visibly fit body lotion it is like an antiaging lotion for your body and that has helped so I think I am going to wait till the end of weightloss and end of kids see where I am at and you know if you have the money go for it, but reading about the hurt and swelling for a YEAR really makes you think you have to really want it and I think if I got to that point I might just do it! Thanks so much!

I opted for plastic surgery after I received an inheritance from my mom passing away. While I will admit it was quite the rash decision, I am happy I did it. I wasn’t always happy with my chest size, so I decided to make the change while I had the funds to do it.

I had a great experience and while I do not think I will have anymore surgeries, I am happy with the decision I made.

If you are wondering, I ended up investing the rest of my money. The second I tell people that I had the surgery, they automatically assume I am a barbie and that I wasted it all on plastic surgery. SO not the case.

  19. Hope says:

YES! If I had the means I wouldn’t think twice about have surgery after I lose my weight. I think in general people have a warped idea of what plastic surgery is and is for because it has been so misused for many years now. I would do it and not say a word. I’d just let everyone compliment me on how FABULOUS I look and smile and feel great about it. LOL!

hi roni. i would not have plastic surgery b/c it’s mainly to do with my belief/faith.. god gave me a beautiful body with all my imperfections.. this might sound extreme, but i think it’s like a slap in His face if i did that.. (same goes for tattoos and other body altering things..)
i try to learn and love myself wholly and anything i want to change i try to do so naturally. :D

then again, i have not had a baby, nor do i have loose skin..

  21. McBunni says:

I would get plastic surgery…..but I’m not sure about the after-wight-loss kind. An eye lift, though? Hell yes!
