Trying Something New
Routines. I live by them and when I’m off, I’m really OFF!
Now that classes are over and I’m on my own (on the job front that it) It’s going to be even harder to find that routine. Honestly, I’m scared, in a ‘change is scary’ type of way. Work gave me a haven on the diet front. I’d eat breakfast with the toddler, pack my healthy “snacks”, munch all day (mostly) without temptation, and come home to cook a healthy dinner. Everything just fell into place. I have a feeling the next few weeks will be a transition period until I find my new groove.
That, being said, I’m trying something new! If you noticed I’m writing this in the morning! I never write in the morning. For the life of this blog I’ve always written before bed. Then when I added a community and a second blog to my online portfolio that bed time became later and later and later.
Now that I’m taking on clients the time I start my own posts and site maintenance is even getting later. If I keep my current pace up I won’t hit the hay until 3AM and with a toddler at home that’s just unacceptable (although I think I do my best work at night). Plus he is uncanny at *knowing* the days I needed to burn the midnight oil and wakes up exceptionally early, accordingly.
So in this morning post I will do a classic Roni quick updates list that I had originally planned for last night.
- Diets In Review asked if I’d do another guest post giving some insight into Weight Watchers Meeting. So if you aren’t a Weight Watchers member you might want to check out my abbreviated recap.
- Liza emailed me and asked if I’d complete and post a survey groups and weight loss. She is doing a class project for a Social Communication and New Technology class at UCLA. I’m a sucker for academics so if you have a chance today please give the survey a look. It’s ONLY 10 questions. ;~)
- OK, I already posted about the EVIL kettle corn, well I also picked up Chocolate Cookies and Cream Breyer’s Free. OMFG (I’d rather not curse but internet shorthands are OK, right? ;~P It is TOO good to be true. It’s is by far the best fat free ice cream I’ve every had. Even the husband and the toddler are hooked! Unlike the vanilla it is 2 points a serving, but still. I may have to portion out the rest to prevent myself from just gabbing the quart out of the freezer.
- I went a little snack happy last night but I did play racquetball for over 2 hours yesterday! Ahhh the joys of being jobless. ;~) It was SO much fun and I’m really going to try to get the husband to join me. I’m shooting for once a week.
- Speaking of the husband. He is showing signs of wanting to make healthy changes (FINALLY I may be rubbing off on him). I’ve notice a decrease in his snackage and he actually asked me to show him some ball moves AFTER he worked out. SHOCKING! He hasn’t worked out is years.
- Wednesday is my big weigh in after almost 6 weeks of “trying to be one of ‘those’ people”. I have to admit, I think I put on a few pounds. I feel “thicker”, if that makes any sense. I’m not sure if it’s all the weight lifting or I added some fat by all my recent snack attacks. Either way after Wednesday’s weigh in I may count points for a week or two to help get me through this transition of schedule.
- Finally (phew- I had a lot to tell you again), I’ve partnered up with Vitalicious and I now have my own VitaStore (that’s what I’m calling it anyway). So if you buy Vitalicious products online throw a purchase my way, you’ll get 10% off and you’ll be supporting my site (and recent decision to quit my job! ;~P) Just be sure to use the coupon code, WRN53108.
- Wait, wait, one more thing. I’m SUPER behind on Ask Roni questions. Really, I can’t keep up. First, I want to say I will answer you all, I promise. You just need to be patient. I’m planning on possibly adding a weekly video feature here where I answer the questions in "person" like I did for GreenLiteBites. It’s faster then me typing and honestly I think I do a better job speaking then writing (who am I kidding! I suck as both LOL). What do you think? OH! and Pastaqueen from Half of Me is going to answer a few with me on Friday as part of her book tour.
OK, OK, that really is enough. I have to make breakfast! WOW, it’s weird for me to say that after posting. Coincidently, the toddler is not up yet! LOL

What's Cooking in my kitchen?

I've recently discovered the amazing combination of cheese and dried cherries. I know, it sounds weird, but seriously… good! The other day I smeared some Laughing Cow Light Swiss on Cucumber slices and then topped with a cherry. It was a fun, sweet twist on standard cheese and crackers. Well, cheese [...] -
If I was a good blogger this idea would have been published BEFORE the Super Bowl not during it. I made these today to have a little fun. Surprisingly, The Husband liked them even though he didn't eat more than one. Why? Because he's strange like [...] -
If you read my weight loss blog you know I'm battling a bit of back and neck pain right now. I'm starting to feel a little better but those first few days where rough. Being the head chef of the household, this meant we ordered in a couple of times. I'm [...] -
I'm LOVING Pinterest! I can just scroll all day long looking at food photo after food photo. I wish I had more time to peruse! (I'm RoniNoone there by the way?) The other day I pinned a Portabello Mushroom pizza and was immediately inspired. It's such a simple idea and so light. [...] -
The other day I found myself craving an Orange Julius. Are they as popular as I think they are? Growing up we had an Orange Julius at our local mall. It was always a treat for us at the end of a family shopping trip. Once I was old enough to be [...] -
So I'm a little breakfast nutty at the moment. Little Bean LOVES eggs and I find myself cooking them more and more. This morning I decided to go super light (after last nights chocolate overload) and it was totally satisfying for just over 100 calories! The trick to making [...] -
A few weeks ago I saw Chef Michael Simon make a raw kale salad on The Chew. He sliced beets up real thin and cut the kale into ribbons. Then made a vinaigrette out of red wine vinegar and olive oil. I was immediately intrigued. So far I've only [...] -
I've had this idea for a quick creamy chicken dish for a few days now. It was time to give it a shot. The whole family LOVED it. I'm not joking. The only complaint came from Little Guy who declared his hate of mushrooms yet again BUT he ate everything around them. Fine [...] -
I made this on a total whim yesterday as I had leftover avocado after feeding the baby and leftover Spaghetti squash cooked from the weekend. I roasted the squash to serve with my Chicken tips instead of potatoes and it was AMAZING! Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. So I'm sitting there staring [...] -
It's post holiday season. You know what that means? Leftover Crescent rolls to experiment with! Every year for Thanksgiving I buy a few canisters. It's the only time I do as I can't be trusted around them. Let's just say I'd beat you in the How-Many-Crescent-Rolls-Can-You-Eat-In-One-Sitting game and leave [...] -
Last week the kids and I tried parsnips for the first time and I've made them 3 times since. I wanted to figure out the best way to roast them. Yeah, that's it, the best way to roast them. You'll buy that right? Right? The truth is, I'm obsessed. I found myself [...] -
Yesterday just felt like a good day to stuff an acorn squash. I had one sitting on my counter for quite some time and it was just begging to be cooked. Since both husband and child don't like it I made a solo meal just for me and, well, it was DELICIOUS! [...] -
I bought a fennel bulb on a whim for the holidays not knowing quite what I would do with it. Of course I forgot about until yesterday when I was rummaging through the fridge trying to figure out what I wanted to make for breakfast. I pulled it out and stared [...] -
I probably should have warned you I was taking a holiday hiatus. I've been soaking up every moment of family time imaginable these last few days, leaving no time for anything else. Not even blogging! Shocking I know. ;) So I return not with a new recipe, per se, but to [...] -
Here's a quick idea for when you find yourself with a spaghetti squash but don't quite know what to do with it. Come on. Admit it. That's happened to you too. It's sure happened to me! I roasted this squash on Sunday... [...] -
I'm not sure if this will be a crowd pleaser, but I liked it and thought I'd share in hopes it inspires you to have some fun with kale. I loved the combination of sweet pear, earthy kale, salty bacon bits and creamy hummus. The only issue with the wrap was [...] -
I'm going on day 2 of counting Weight Watcher Points and I'm already inspired to come up with light, healthy meals for myself. It's like I needed the constraint of points to motivate me. Isn't that weird? Anyway, all morning I was brainstorming what to make for lunch. I wanted something flavorful [...] -
I have a friend who patiently cleaned, peeled and cubed a fresh pumpkin and then selflessly gave me some. Scratch that, a TON! I would have never even thought of doing something like that! But now that I have it in my fridge the ideas are flowing. First, I roasted some [...] -
CHRISTMAS COOKIES! YAY! Sorry. I'm so excited! Little Guy and I had tons of fun making and decorating cookies today. It may just be my favorite part of the holiday season. I loved it when I was a kid and now I get to do it with my own kids. [...] -
This may be my simplest idea yet, but it was so tasty and satisfying I had to share. Plus you guys know I'm a Laughing Cow Community Leader so I'm all about sharing fun ways to use their products. You guys may also know how I feel about pausing and making [...] -
I made this on Thursday. THURSDAY! I hate when I can't post something I've eaten within 24 hours. It just bugs me. Not sure why, it really doesn't matter when I post it, does it? Anyway, I did whip this up to cure a pizza craving and I couldn't be happier. [...] -
It's been awhile since I jazzed up a tilapia fillet. I've breaded them before, coated them in oats, flavored them like one of my favorite drinks and topped them with a fun salsa. It was time to bring nuts into the party. You are going to think I'm crazy but I've [...] -
Fun leftover turkey idea #2! Click here for leftover turkey idea #1. I had a little Gouda leftover from this years Harvest Salad and decided to put all the same flavors from the salad into a quesadilla. I just can't get enough of the smokey gouda/sweet craisin combo. It goes [...] -
It's the day after Thanksgiving and my refrigerator ROCKS! I have leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, roasted Brussels Sprouts, a bunch of veggies and tons of miscellaneous fun stuff. I've already made stock from the bones (like this) and my first batch of soup, Classic Turkey Noodle. I hope to share [...] -
I'm so sorry I've been slacking in the Thanksgiving recipe department. I feel like a bad food blogger. Everyone else is posting festive ideas and here I've gone missing for a few days. Maybe it's because I'm not doing anything special for Turkey day. I finally got my holiday cooking [...]
About Roni
Roni started this blog in '05 to journal her weight loss. 70lbs later, she's committed to living a conscious, healthy life and hopes to inspire others along the way. Read more on the about page.

you sound busy! I love that you have decided to stay at home and do more stuff there. Lucky toddler…have you considered writing a book like HG? I would buy it! :-)
As my child would say, “HOLY SMOKES” you are a busy woman! But it sounds like all fun stuff, nothing boring or have-to stuff. And just a warning to some about Breyers Free…1/2 c. is 1 WW point, but a whole cup is 4!! Some people don’t recalculate for the two serving and just add the one point twice, but in this instance it is a killer!!! But I’m so glad it’s out there because it really tastes like REAL ice cream!!
HAVE A GREAT ONE!
Wow, a busy woman you are!
I am totally a routine person too, and it’s much, much harder for me to stay OP when I am out of my normal routine. I can’t imagine how hard it is staying in one being as busy as you are!
keeping yourself busy will keep you away from the refrigerator) thats a good choice
As for “feeling” thicker, I think that’s natural when you’ve been off your game a bit.
I know my perceived weight can slide by 20lbs based on how i’ve been doing recently in the gym and in the kitchen.
To Roni and anyone who has completed my survey: thank you so much! I’ve already gotten over 100 responses – that’s impressive! I’ll post a note about the results as soon as I type them up… Thanks again!
I’m anxiously awaiting some tips as you learn how to deal with the new at-home more situation. I work from home and really struggle with the snacking!
Liza, not sure if this matters, but I think there is a small typo in the survey.
It reads: “To what extent do you identity with the blogger?” I think it should be identify. Not a big deal, just wanted to give you a heads up in case you wanted to change it.
you are super duper busy………i like routine though as well..it keeps me going….
good luck on all your trying to do….I did the survey..glad I could help..I agree with you on being one for academics..since I did go to school to be a teacher…
lemmie know if you want an accountability buddy for working at home.
I found that initially it was not good for me (hello SADDLEBAGS! as I ate at the computer) but once I got into a groove I was ok (and lost the bags)
happy to help if I can save you from making my mistakes.
M.
Wow…you are busy! I admire you for taking the leap to work for yourself!! :)
I wrote on my blog today about routine…as soon as I change one thing bam…I mess up.
Good luck on all your ventures! I know the toddler will be soooo happy to have you around…he will be a great helper! :)
I like that you’re blogging in the morning. Since I’m normally in bed by 9:30, I don’t get to read them till the next day.
Good luck with all your work, you busy lady!
Alisha – FYI – Breyers Free – 1C equals 3 points not 4. Two servings 180cal/0g fat/6g fiber…double check your slider and point calculator on WW online… it’s on the lower side of 3 points…
oops -let me clarify -that is for the Breyers Free Flavos: Vanilla, Strawberry, French Chocolate, Cappuccino Chocolate Chunk, Caramel Swirl and Mint Fudge all equal 3 points if you have a full 1 cup serving.
The Chocolate Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Fudge Brownie do equal 4 points per 1 cup serving.
Sorry Roni for diverting off topic I just didn’t want anyone to miss out on this delish ice cream. :)
I have to say, if it wasn’t for your review of Breyers free ice cream I would have never bought it. I love it-love it. I had honestly thought I would have to give up ice cream in my life because after 9 years of being on WW I still couldn’t have ice cream in the house. This stuff is GREAT and for some reason, a little is enough for me. Thanks!!!!
anonymous….I must have a different Breyer’s Free carton than you because mine is 110/0/4 per serving and that adds up to 220cal/0 fat/ 8 g. fiber in 1 c. which on WW online adds up to 4 pts. Is there a different Breyer’s Free Vanilla out there?
So I called Breyer’s and they are having problems with the ice cream labels…some of the testers for NI are showing 90 cals for 1/2 c. and some are showing 110. Just so happens that my package was printed with the 110 so be careful….maybe things have more than we think!!! :) AHHHHHH
Hi Roni…I just so happened to pick up the Breyers Ice Cream last week (Full of hope… but not expecting much!) and WOW, it is soooo good. It really tastes like ice cream… good old fashioned, full of fat, creamy ice cream.
I also used your link and bought some vitamuffin mixes. I love that stuff and it was cheaper online than it was in the store… before your 10% off!
Thanks for all the great websites… I LOVE Blog to Lose!
wow! you are a BUSY! i’m so glad you wrote about this.. i snack all the time at my job.. so any helpful advice would be wonderful! i love the blog! keep it up!
