Do you wear Spandex?
I can’t take credit for this weeks question idea. I was in the mood for a more lighthearted topic. I mean it is April Fools, right? So while sifting through my email, I came across Suzan’s question. It just made me chuckle (sorry if you didn’t mean it that way Suzan).
Roni
Do you think the invention of spandex was a diet disaster? I do. It is SO easy to buy a medium and stretch and stretch to the point one does not realize if they have gained weight or not. The clothes just keep on stretching.I threw away ALL my pants with spandex and only wear pants with a button and zipper. Believe it or not it really keeps me conscientious of my body and happy I’m not stretching pants to the max.
What do you think? Throw them away??
So this weeks big question is… Do you wear Spandex? Or do you agree with Suzan.
Me? Well I honestly, I have a few pairs for the gym. LOL but I’m in a pair of jeans just about everyday.

Finally my first Farro idea! I have to say, I love this stuff! It's chewy and yummy and, well, fun! I tossed it with what I could find in my pantry and it made a wonderfully satisfying lunch. Filling but not heavy, tasty and quite nutrient dense. According to NutritionData.com this [...] -
I've seen it mentioned in a few of my clean eating and healthy cook books but honestly, I never even thought of Farro as an option for me. I refuse to shop at specialty stores and I try to use only common products that I can keep in stock and purchase from a typical grocery [...] -
I've never had a tuna melt. Is that weird? I guess that's what happens when you grow up not liking mayonnaise. I never ate tuna salad or egg salad or chicken salad. Honestly, they always kind of grossed me out. Then I realized.. hey.. why does tuna salad have [...] -
I have no idea where this idea came from. I was hungry. It was lunch. I had Brussels Sprouts. That was all the catalyst I needed.:) I decided to use a slice of real bacon to add flavor and little fat that would help sauté the sprouts. I'm trying [...] -
WOW was this good. I mean seriously good. It's not vegetarian so don't start throwing stones. I'm calling it a Garden Vegetable Burger because I use the new Laughing Cow Smooth Sensations Garden Vegetable Cream Cheese Spread. It was this recipe on Allrecipes.com that inspired [...] -
I drink water 99.9% of the time but every so often it just doesn't cut it. I want something else. Something more. Something slightly sweet. Today was one of those days. I decided to make a refreshing drink based on the famous Arnold Palmer, half lemonade and half iced [...] -
The other day I made a whole chicken on the grill in pieces. It was delicious! Just a little BBQ sauce and an open flame is all I need to make The Husband happy in the dinner department. I also picked up a few ears of corn from the grocery store. They aren't in season [...] -
Let me explain so you don't think I'm making a chili recipe and just put it on pizza. I'm calling this vegetarian Chili Pizza because chili is what inspired flavors. I think I told you. Little Bean is really into, well, BEANS! We go through a can about every 2 days. Yesterday [...] -
I've confessed my inability to follow recipes here on GreenLiteBites many, many times. I don't know why it's so hard for me. I can barely follow some of my own and I wrote the darn things! I think most of my problem stems from not having all the ingredients listed and, [...] -
Leftover brown rice and leftover sauce meet in this quick lunch idea inspired by my favorite food of all time: Pizza. I swear I can turn anything into a pizza concoction. Have you seen all my pizza ideas? I've used everything from pumpkin to zucchini, polenta to wontons. Nothing is off [...] -
This isn't a recipe just an idea I had to share. I can't believe how good it was! I've never had grilled pineapple. Can you believe it? I just never really had the desire to grill it before. When you love something raw sometimes it doesn't occur to you to cook it. [...] -
I whipped this up for lunch on a whim today because, well, I have a baby who's obsessed with three things… Cheese, Beans, and Avocado. No, really. Look... It's my go to meal for him so I find myself with beans and avocado readily available. [...] -
You know that tradition 7 Layer Mexican Dip? The one with the cream cheese, guacamole, salsa, lettuce, cheese, green onion and olives? Yea. That's the one. Well I had a craving for it the other day. Well, not exactly for it as I can never make anything the way it's suppose [...] -
If you go through the archives of GreenLiteBites I have about 5 total beef recipes. Five. Compare that to the 80+ I have tagged with chicken/turkey there's a clear winner in the meat department on my blog and in my home. I don't have a beef with beef (omg The Husband [...] -
I'm a kitchen sink smoothie maker. Whatever I have on hand goes in the blender and viola! A quick breakfast or a healthy snack. Last year I posted an "Elastic Approach" to how I make smoothies but I still like to share specific combinations that worked really well. This was one [...] -
The other night it was just the kids and I home for dinner and I decided to make what I wanted to make no holds barred. Without The Husband home it's much easier for some reason. Hmmm wonder why? Ok, not here to husband bash.. really.. I'm not! I'm here [...] -
*sigh* I was really hoping to share an awesome turkey burger idea. I had grand plans for my leftover ground turkey. The results was alright but they could have been so much better. I added diced pineapple, red pepper, green pepper, oats and soy sauce to the meat and formed 2 patties. In hindsight I [...] -
I made this on a total whim yesterday having no idea if it would work. To my surprise it did AND the husband actually said he liked it... UNSOLICITED! Here's the story. I had only 4 tilapia fillets defrosted for dinner. I knew it wasn't going to be enough for us [...] -
This is a slight reboot of a recipe I posted last year simply called Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili. Staying true to my use-what-I-have-on-hand roots I, well, used what I had on hand and made a similar dish with a spicy twist. Topping the result with avocado added a cool creaminess that [...] -
Did you hear? The Laughing Cow recently launched Smooth Sensations a line of 5 cream cheese spreads. There's Classic Cream, Classic Cream Light, Strawberries & Cream, Garden Vegetable and my favorite… Cinnamon. It's a sweet wedge of creamy goodness! Today I decided to use my new favorite flavor [...] -
Confession time, I recorded a 30 minute video making this with both kids (partally) 2 nights ago. I miss videos. I really do but they seem so much more difficult with 2 children. I'm also having technical difficulties with my video recording and audio syncing making it VERY time consuming to edit. [...] -
A couple of years ago I shared a modified version of Sloppy Joe's I made for a party. Everyone loved it but I've been wanting to try to make something similar for the family on a smaller scale and without the pre-made canned Manwich sauce. I don't particularly have any issues [...] -
Yesterday I was dreaming about a salad. Not just any salad, but a chickpea filled, cucumber, and red onion salad with a fun, tangy dressing. Unfortunately, I had no cucumber or red onion. Well, that's a lie. I had a half of cucumber but it was a mushy mess and [...] -
Dinner meals are getting harder and harder for me to share lately. I've gone back to just whipping things up without really measuring anything (this meal was going to be one of those until I realized I still had enough light to take some photos.) I've also instituted a few brainless meal nights [...] -
Three years ago I posted a video called "Makin' Hard Boiled Eggs" where I shared my system for, well... making hard boiled eggs. Genius name, I know. I'm smart like that. Anyway, since then I've gotten tons of feedback and comments thanking me but all the information is locked in a long winded 10 minute [...]

I don’t know about you, but me in spandex is like a pregnant John Belushi. Nothing gets me to diet faster.
I heard somewhere once that one way to monitor how much weight you are losing is to get a great pair of jeans and judge your weight by how well they fit. So I’m not too much of a spandex girl. I do have some stretchy pants that I wear to bed or some gym type pants for the gym but I wouldn’t wear them out anywhere.
I echo christie.
just wrote a mag article on precisely that.
when I GAINED weight it was due to my ohsoFORGIVING spandex.
oops :)
just my .02
I think once your ready to lose weight for real ….you do what you need to do , no matter what your wearing…..but if it helps some people not to wear them….then whatever it takes for you….for me I like the stretchy material because of my body type…some parts are way bigger than others…so it helps to be able to buy pants small enough to fit the smaller parts but stretchy enough to “stuff” the rest in.
I did not wear jeans for 3 years because I refused to buy a size larger than 14. At the time, I thought spandex was the greatest. Never again! Now I am just like Suzan. I make sure I can button my pants. It keeps me in check. Spandex is only for the gym!!!
I must disagree. I love the way clothes with 10% or so spandex drape on my body, especially tops. Also, I have an apple shape, so un-stretchy clothes that fit my waist are way too baggy on my hips/bottom. So, I fit my hips/bottom with a waist that gives a few inches. The new RightFit jeans at Lane Bryant seem to work better so I may have my first pair of “true jeans” in years! PS. I see gals squeezed into too tight jeans all the time, so that theory isn’t working for them either LOL
Alinakaren (away from home pc)
I have to agree with anonymous on this, all my jeans have a little spandex in them and I like it that way. I buy 95% of my jeans at Old Navy and I love the way they fit. A while back I ended up with the cutest pair of jeans but not realizing it until I got home, they didnt have any spandex, they were horribly uncomfortable. They fit fine, they were the right size and everything but they didnt “give” any. The material was just extremely “tight”. I know that even when I get to my desired weight, I’ll still buy jeans with a little spandex. because lets face it, I gotta sit down once in a while! Spandex is in a lot of material, not just gym clothes.
I totally agree. I too got rid of the “stretch” and elastic waist band pants for all but the gym or sleeping.
Totally off subject but why doesnt my name come up in blue when I leave a comment? What am I doing wrong?? I have a weightwatchen blog…

Spandex is a little evil, but not b/c it stretches, but b/c it shows every lump and bump. Consequently, I only wear it when I’m in shape. I do like a little in my jeans though.
First of all…the word “Spandex”. It just isn’t an appealing word. In Iowa we have Ragbrii…..biking across Iowa. If you have ever seen thousands of people in Spandex at once it can be overwhelming for the eye!!!! Very few people can slip on a pair of spandex shorts/bra and parade around in them confidently. It is kind of like the bra “double bubble” syndrome. It squeezes you together in one area to push it somewhere else……yeah…anyway as you can tell not much of a fan unless it is under your clothes to keep you really warm….then it is a GOOOD THING!
Love the topic!!! Boy is it important to LAUGH! It helps keep things in perspective doesn’t it? Life can be sooo funny and yet we take everything sooo seriously! In this weight loss journey laughter at where you have been, where you are going and how you are getting there can be such a relief. We can’t beat ourselves up about every little detail. Celebrate, encourage, laugh, and perservere….all leads to a positive outlook on our journey. Thanks for the laugh Roni….you brightened my day remembering back to these spandex leggings I wore. I am positive that I thought I looked good in them. A good morning laugh!
I found a pair of old spandex shorts recently that I used to exercise in. I have never been one to wear spandex a lot. I’m in jeans 99% of the time. But now so many jeans come with “stretch” in them (particularly the bigger sizes of course), and I do have some of those. I don’t think that does anything to contribute though. Even though they may “stretch”, when I gain weight they cling and stick to me which I hate, so I know I’ve gained the weight.
Stretchy clothes feel great but they do take away the accountability that is built into waistbands and buttons!
I can understand your point about spandex not allowing us to keep ourselves in check weight-wise, but I have to say THANK GOSH FOR SPANDEX! I have a slender waist, and a big ol’ butt and thighs. If spandex wasn’t around I would find it nearly impossible to find any jeans that fit me (it’s already quite hard!). Plus, I love my comfy house/work-out pants that have a little bit of spandex in them – they make it so much nicer to move around in (especially if my belly feels all bloated from that time of the month).
spandex lining in front of panties, help keep my second belly in check. :)
i either wear yoga pants or leggings to the gym, which both have some spandex. i need something breathable that wont get caught in the stairclimber. They are good that time of the month pants as well.
I don’t like the jeans with the stretch in them.. That seems like all of the jeans they make now a days have that.. so by the time I sit in them for about 30 minutes, I have a saggy ass… I have 2 pairs of jeans that are a size 12 that were bought before all the jeans were made with the stretch. I am now a 10, and they hang off me, but I will wear them in a pinch, because they look better than stretched out jean of the right size
I’m gonna go with no spandex, no stretch jeans, no nothing that won’t retain it’s shape after me moving around campus all day. It just looks better on me.
And I remember watching a show many many years ago (Dr. Phil maybe?) where the host of the show was helping his guests lose weight. He went in their closets and threw out anything and everything that had an elastic waistband. Once they lost weight, he threw out all the clothes they’d gotten too small for. His reasoning was that if those bigger clothes are around, it’s easier to not let a weight gain bother you, but if you’re forced into buying new clothes, you’ll be more likely to change.
I do like spandex, it definitely has it’s place in my wardrobe although I do think one can depend on it a little too much at times. I think they’ve come a long way since stirrup pants! How hideous and unflattering were those?! On the other hand, non-spandex clothing does look more polished. Great question!
Ok I don’t know if it’s technically spandex per say, but my running pants for winter are pretty crazy tight like spandex however they are the only thing I can really wear… beyond that it’s not really a normal every day thing though!
I love elastic pants!
Roni,,I feel like I’ve made it,,you used my silly question,,,I mean’t it to be FUNNY..but nevertheless SO true..so girls,,throw those SPANDEX in the Salvation Army pile..with the gym clothes as an exception~Love this forum..Have a great non spandex day..Suzan
Oh,,Bye the way,,I do not mean clothing with a smaller % of spandex..as I love the fit too,,I am referring to the pants that are a great amount of spandex.or jersey like fabric that do not hold you accountable~ HAHA. Also I’m not necessarily targeting tops…If I’d known Roni was going to use my question I would have written it more precisely,,You people are TOUGH critics..More power to you RONI~I don’t want your job………….Suzan
I agree with her 100%! I’m 65; kept a pair of blue-jeans that I was wearing at age 22, and used them to keep me ‘in check’.
I still have them – still fit into them, and ‘bless them’, because I could also tell if I’d gained a pound or two, and it’s so much easier to lose it at that point.

Pfft. The whole “throw clothing away” thing has led to my buying entirely too much clothing. I go into a size, I go out of a size. I lost a lot of weight after I was pregnant, got down to a 16 and threw out all my 18 – 22s, and then gained it back a few years later, and guess what? Had to buy new clothes again. Got depressed, threw out the 18s and 16s… and buying new clothes again! Sheesh.
Whoever said that had a much bigger budget to work with than I do.
Spandex tight fitting stuff, I do not like. Bad enough I look like a potato, but I don’t think everyone needs to see every little bump and nudge.
A little give in the jeans? Great. Especially if you’re a mom and picking up (and picking up after) your little one all the time.
OK, well, I have to give my .02 here for whatever it’s worth. I think every single pair of pants I own have some amount of spandex in them, usually 1% to 2%. These are good quality dress pants and jeans, not your old elastic waist spandex stretch pants. There is a big difference there. I have to say I like the “give” of the spandex, but I HATE that it over-gives (I just made that word up) and by that I mean that once I have had them on for a couple of hours, they start to sag and bag and they get too loose. So, yes, they are very comfortable but they don’t hold their shape and they start to fall off. Belts have become my friend. Having said that, even in a size 4/6, I think that pants without at least a little spandex would be pretty uncomfortable. I’ve actually been thinking about trying a pair of 100% cotton jeans just to see how they feel. Can anyone recommend a brand?
I also have a couple of pairs of yoga type pants that I throw on sometimes on the weekends if I have to just run to the grocery store or something. I have to admit…they are soooooo comfortable. I just need those super comfy days every once in a while. :)
i prefer my pants (like khakis) and jeans to have at least 1% spandex – anything more is too much… i feel more comfortable in them and less-constrained so for me, spandex is my friend… i also wear spanx under outfits that need a bit more refinement – who cares what you wear underneath! if it makes you fee better, than that’s what matters! :o)
Wow, I totally just had a 1990′s flashback. I don’t wear spandex anymore.. but I do wear Spanx. They’re great for smoothing out the bumps!!
I tagged you! I tagged you! Come check out my blog to see why!
I have to say that back in the
1990s when everyone wore short overalls in the summer, I owned 2 pairs. They were a little bit large when I got them and I believe me they allowed me to eat without having that snug feeling that lets you know that you’ve had enough! I remember at the end of the summer I had gained around 7 pounds. It just blew my mind…now I know that’s not the only reason I gained weight, but still I think when we have a little reminder from our waistline – it helps us all!
I think spandex can be a motivating factor for getting in shape. Even though they stretch, they can really make a pudgy person look bad real fast. As a guy, I appreciate spandex when it is used appropriately.
