Can’t vs. Haven’t

13 Comments 1603 views

I’ve been thinking about those two words for the past couple of days. As I sit, still disgusted with myself after this weekend (and the chip incident tonight) I realized it’s March. Not only March but the end of March.  That’s three months since I made my new years goals. Let’s do a little assessment.

Get back to my personal goal of 140lbs
Ok there is really no reason I haven’t reached this goal yet. It’s not unrealistic to lose 5 pounds in 3 months. Since working out I feel like I eat more (which I should be) but more out of control.  Almost like my workouts give me some kind of unconscious permission to excessively snack.  This needs to stop.
Climb the inclined (hard level) rock wall at the gym
I can do this! I tried once and failed but I KNOW I can do it.  It’s going to take a lot of work and training but I’m up for the challenge.
Do 1 Unassisted Pull Up
This one scares me. I tried the other day at the gym and it’s really seems impossible but I’m going to keep on trying. A lot can change in 9 months, especially when you’re working out!

So back to these little words, can’t and haven’t.  I caught myself saying I can’t do this a few times in the last few weeks. But that’s just not true. I can do it, I just haven’t yet. I need to drop the negative attitude and get back into my groove. I know I can, I have and I will. It’s that easy.

While doing my normal perusing of the internet (I should be catching up on my blog reading but instead I stumble – I’m addicted) I came across this awesome article on Over Coming Weight Loss BS.  It’s a very straightforward look at losing weight and the author says something that concretes my post tonight…

Q. What really determines weight loss (or gain)?
A. Attitude, thinking, self-control, mind-set and ultimately, decisions.

There you have, the BIG secret to weight loss. It all comes down to attitude and that is why I write this blog. It helps me stay positive. So I’ll say it again, it’s not that I can’t reach these goals, I just haven’t yet.

I’d love to hear your story or thoughts on mine.

However, to prevent the massive amounts of spam I was receiving I have turned off comments on any post older than 5 days old. If you'd like to leave me a note regarding this post or anything really try me on twitter (@RoniNoone,) my Facebook page, or even IG (@RoniNoone) I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I never thought I'd have to do this but it's gotten way out of hand and comment management has become simply too time consuming to manage.

Pull-ups are the exercise from hell. I swear I’m 24 and have never successfully completed a full one.

But if humans can get to the moon, I can do a pull up. It shall be done!

I love love love this post! I do the exact same “can’t” “haven’t” thing and it just slips past, it’s such habit! Man, I’m so certain you can do the wall and pull-up… and I think I may steal the second idea from you. I want to do a pull-up too!

Look at how amazing you did today! Nice work!

Thank you! I’m struggling with being 6 pounds over goal right now. (That’s nine pounds over my personal goal.) You nailed down exactly what my problem is. I’m hitting the gym. I’m eating well through most of the day. And then, when I get home, it’s a taste of this and some of that, etc.

Must gain focus. I have the power to stop putting things in my mouth.

I am on board. I CAN TOO!!! I am looking ahead into my future and picking an occasion where I want to be at my goal weight. I too, have 6 pounds to loose…..lets do it! There was nothing stopping me the first time….and I actually enjoyed loosing. It gave me a little “high”. I love the challenge. But, my mind set hasn’t been there lately. It is there today. I am ready to go. 6 lbs by June 1st. POSSIBLE!

    Roni,

I keep trying to think of why I like your blog so much. It is because you bring real life and information to the table all the time in a way we all can get something out of it. You really got my WW thinging juices flowing today. Thank you.

I know you can do this!!! Your blog is so real..everytime I read it…it reminds me of things that I have thought about myself or maybe how the topic relates to me. I know that I keep saying I can’t work out cause I don’t have time…I have realized..excuses are not good and that I can work out and I will be even happier when I do work out and see results…its just more motivation that I need to get me past that bump…I think you tracking your menu will definately help and you can have those last few pounds off before you know it..keep up the great work!

I used to be a circus performer and with the massive amount of working out we constantly ate. we needed lots of calories for our bodies to repair and build muscle. A suggestion would be to talk to your trainer about what they recommend dietwise to keep up with all the activity. She can also measure you bmi which may just tell you the 5 extra pounds is pure muscle ;) You are inspiring and I know you will reach your goals. you are in a totally different chapter now in life.

I love your blog, Roni. You have a way of making things very clear.

I got a little down on myself this weekend, but you put it into perspective: I have control over this. And if I stay positive, I’ll be able to do it. Right now, I’m about 35 lbs over my goal weight (I’ve lost 17 so far), but I’m getting there!

I agree with Jennie that your “extra” 5 lbs is really muscle. If you stopped working out for a few months (which of course you won’t do!) you would probably lose the 5 lbs because you would lose muscle.

Working out has always been a challenge for me because I always GAIN weight! Then when I stop working out the pounds drop off. But I know it’s muscle that is dropping off, too, so I try to stick with it.

    Thanks for your inspiriting site.

if you are having cravings after exercise, you probably NEED to eat more, especially protein. Consider a glass of skim chocolate milk immediately after, it helps with the cravings. And make sure you eat the extra points for the work out, your body needs it!!
