One Mom’s Journey from Fat to Skinny to Confident

Ben & Jerry’s Lighten Up!

23 Comments 3116 views

Ben & Jerrys Lighten UpI hope this isn’t a “What are you, living under a rock” find but I just (re)discovered that Ben & Jerry’s has a lighter line.

The husband wanted to get a treat for himself and good old B&J’s were 2 for $5 so I just HAD to take look.  I figured I could get a fun flavor and go home, separate it into 4 portions and have a ready go ‘splurgy’ dessert.  I mean a life without Ben & Jerry’s is, well, you know.

So I approach the freezer and see this whole “Lighten Up” row.  Umph, I think, as I turn the container over to read the nutritional information, and I’m pleasantly surprise to see a very point friendly treat!

I don’t know about you, but a 3 point Ben & Jerry’s treat sounds good to me! Not that we can’t have the “real stuff” but I’d rather save the 3 points or better yet, have 2 servings! ;~P

Now, I know you are wondering, does it taste the same? Well, I haven’t had the “real” stuff in a long time and after having this I don’t think I ever need to again. It was creamy, chocolaty and had a ton of delicious brownie goodness!

Note: I still separated it into 4 servings. I just can’t be trusted with a pint of anything in the freezer. It’s a just TOO easy to grab it, plop in front of the TV and, uh, before you know it, its gone. I often wondered why they didn’t just market the pint as 1 serving. ;~)

I don’t think I knew about this, either. Initially, when I first started reading your post, I thought for certain I didn’t ~ but then I saw the picture and I could swear I remember seeing some at the grocery store last time I was there. But it just didn’t register. Which, I guess is a good thing. But splurgy desserts every once and awhile are a good thing, as far as I’m concerned.

Because they KNOW that a whole pint is too much for any person to eat.

I have never seen this before, but I will have to watch for it now. Although I’m not sure I have any more room in my diet for treats. I’ve discovered Mrs. Freshley’s snack cakes. I’m not sure whether that’s fortunately….or…unfortunately. I’m still staying within my daily points, but I think I’m eating too many of them.

But a good ice cream is good once in a while.

Oh man. I LOVE Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie. So good! Best ice cream innovation since the low cal ice cream sandwich. I heard a rumour that in the US they have B&J’s Half Baked in a low-cal version…any truth to that? If I were ever desperate enough, I’d probably make the trek down to Montana for it!

WOW! That’s awesome. I love Ice Cream… I will definetly check that one out.
I’ve been reading your blog on and off the last few weeks. I decided to start one up, come and check it out.

Yummy…I had no idea they had low fat version. I am definately going to have to check it out.

I am right there with you on the whole splitting the portions into 4 containers…the great thing is that you don’t have to measure out each time you want a serving!! :)

I am a HUGE fan of ice cream…so I can’t wait to try this yummy treat. Thanks for sharing!

In my book, Ice Cream should be considered a food group. You already have the dairy…throw in some fruit and you have covered two bases in one treat!

I LOVE B and J’s lighten up. My favorite is the Cherry Garcia yogurt. It is sooo good and I really don’t feel like I’m eating something that different from the original. I also eat the fudge brownie and half baked. It’s really a great treat low in calories! Thanks for the post

haha yes it seems you have missed the boat on this one. I had a cone of this last summer at our local B&J shop..mmmm SO GOOD! Our local grocery chain has it as well, i was actually eyeing it when walking by yesterday! :)

Question…what type of containers do you use to split it into 4 servings? Thanks!

Did you ever hear of that saying “FACE FIRST”….well, can you heard that thump? That’s me going face first in the frozen yogurt isle at the grocery store. Ice cream is one of my bad bad weaknesess, along with chips, but ohhhh those lovelly words “3 points”….they make the guilt temptation ease up a bit! I love jazzing up my icecream too….to make it seem like I’m eating something somewhat healthy too- for instance….if its chocolate yogurt….I add a point of almonds, a point of banannas, a point of strawberries…a dollap of whip cream….and what do you have? Ohhhhhhh a banna spilt. Not to mention a little graham crumbs or something….yum!

Isn’t it amazing how when we’re following WW…we manage to find ways to eat more? Well, I mean, we manage to fancy our foods and get “all that we can” in to a meal. I would have never thought about making ice cream look pretty….but boy oh boy….I’m like an artist in the kitchen when I’m scooping out the cream!

Thanks again Roni for linking my blog from your site. I’m still in awe the amount of traffic it generated. I can only imagine the amount of emails and responses you have to keep up with….in addition to spending time with your family!

I think I have bought this before, though the label looks slightly different from what I remember. I am not a big ice cream fan normally, but I do love Ben & Jerry’s and I thought the lighter frozen yogurt was pretty good when I had it.

    Definitely a happy find!

    Miss July...not...yet

Seen it before, but it never occured to me to divide it up into 4 portions…face smack. Now I know how to keep myself from eating the whole thing…and yes, I can do it.

BTW, glad you are feeling beter. Thanks for all the links in the other post.

    Oohhhhh, that sounds SO good.

I didn’t know about this product, either. But then again, I walk through that section of the grocery store with my eyes averted, walking as quickly as possible. I can’t do carton ice cream … your dividing it out is great, but I think that in the process of dividing it out like you did I’d eat at least half of it. I have control issues when it comes to the ice cream …

You are a stronger woman than I. I cannot even get a pint and be trusted to divide it. A pint is a serving in my crazy mind.

    March 3, 2008

OK! so SOME of you did find it useful! LOL

Just so you know, it’s not yogurt! There is also a frozen yogurt version but this is actually ice cream!

xtx – I just use generic plastic tupperware. It doesn’t last long enough to get freezer burnt!

girl on a mission – YES YES YES I know exactly what you mean. If you are at the stage in WW where you are eating more and staying on points you are well on your way!!

    March 3, 2008

I think the yogurt vs. ice cream comments are because the picture you have here is the yogurt version.

They are delicious – I have tried them all and to me they taste every bit as good as the original. I make graham cracker ice cream sandwiches with it!

    March 3, 2008

You are right!! LOL I thought the yogurt ones had white tops.

    March 3, 2008

I will DEFINATELY be checking these out..i can’t cream is a major weakness of mine!!

Thanks and I’ll let you know how it goes

    Have a GREAT week

PS i know you have done surveys for people to get to know you better and I did one on friday..its called four things..check it out if your interested

    March 3, 2008

Pamelabee – we have a low cal of B&Js half-baked here in OK! :) I just tried it for the first time this afternoon. . .it is delicious! I’m sure if they have it here then they should have it somewhere near you! We almost never have the good food finds Roni is always talking about! ;)

    March 3, 2008

Oh I wish we had the lite version of b&j in Ireland! They are just beginning to advertise it in the UK, but it doesn’t look like it will be coming here any time soon! :-(
Between that and egg-whites in a carton, you are all so lucky in the US with the handy make-life-easier products you all have! I guess it’s in stark contrast to my last post about the gastronomic differences between our nations!

Just getting caught up on my favorite blogs. I’m not sure I’ve paid much attention to the light Ben & Jerry’s. To be honest, I try to avoid that part of the ice cream freezer so as to not bring on disaster. However, since you posted the points value, I will give one a try and get back to you. I will also have to measure it up front or the portions might not be as indicated on the nutrition label, if you know what I mean.

I found a breyers ff ice cream in chocolate brownie fudge. I tried it assuming that any icecream with all of that chocolate and low fat is too good to be true. IT WASN’t this icecream is great!!! Plus only 1 point for 1/2c. A must try!!!

    Melissa – I’m a HUGE fan!!
