Who said it would be easy? – A Response
I received this comment today on my post Dieting Made me Fat – How’d I get Skinny? and thought it warranted a response.
Ummm, yeah…those are good suggestions and I’m glad it worked for you. But what about those of us who’ve already been doing exactly that for years, without losing weight? I ate 1200-1500 calories – on a low-fat, high-protein, veggie & whole grain diet – for several years, and worked out at the gym 1-2 hours/day 4-6 days/week (running 20-25+ miles/week for a while). I lost a few pounds initially, then maintained.
All I’m trying to say is that it’s not as easy as you make it out to be. Some people (~2-5% of dieters) can lose weight and keep it off – great, I’m happy for them. But please don’t claim that anyone can because you did. That’s just not true, and there’s ample evidence – scientific as well as anecdotal – showing this.
Ummmm, yeah, easy. EASY?? I never said it was easy. I was simple sharing MY observations and advice from MY experience. If it were so easy for me I wouldn’t have to blog, look for inspiration daily, keep food journals, etc.
To quote my own post…
I didn’t say it would be easy, did I?
I understand your frustration and I wish I could help you. Just so you know, this blog is the expression of my thoughts and inspiration for those who need a push to change there diet as I did. I didn’t do those things and I was fat because of it. I’m sorry you are having a hard time. But please don’t claim anyone can’t do it just because you can’t. That’s just not true either, there is ample evidence – scientific as well as my own experience – that it is.
Oh! and why are these type of comments always Anonymous?!?
I’ve been doing this a looong time…

I made this on a total whim yesterday having no idea if it would work. To my surprise it did AND the husband actually said he liked it... UNSOLICITED! Here's the story. I had only 4 tilapia fillets defrosted for dinner. I knew it wasn't going to be enough for us [...] -
This is a slight reboot of a recipe I posted last year simply called Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili. Staying true to my use-what-I-have-on-hand roots I, well, used what I had on hand and made a similar dish with a spicy twist. Topping the result with avocado added a cool creaminess that [...] -

About Roni
Roni started this blog in '05 to journal her weight loss. 70lbs later, she's committed to living a conscious, healthy life and hopes to inspire others along the way. Read more on the about page.

These types of comments are probably anonymous because people realize they’re just venting and would rather not be held accountable for it.
I wish I could be anonymous in other aspects of life so easily…
“You keep on getting what you’ve been getting when you keep on doing what you’ve been doing…” A famous quote, the author escapes me. But a very telling quote both for weight loss and the person above’s journey.
Roni, I have lurked on your site everyday for the past 3 months, fully aware that my journey might not entail exactly the same things that your journey does. Regardless, I find you an inspiration and eloquently motivational for those days when I’m having trouble coming up with my own reason for being.
Thank you for all that you put into this sight and for sharing very personal insights into your own life. You are so deeply appreciated by me!
Warmest regards,
Maryann
I hate when people can’t stand up enough to put their name with their words. Errr!
Good post. Thank you for re-encouraging us.
Dear Roni:
I think your blog is great. In addition to that comment being anonymous, it failed to cite the elusive “scientific evidence.” I’d like to know the ratio of people who physically cannot lose weight to those who blame their inability to do so on science.
Regardless, congratulations, and keep up the great blogging!
Maria
Roni, Roni, Roni..
There will be people who ALWAYS complain about something. If it is raining, they want sun. If it is sunny, it is too hot. They will never be satisfied. Keep your head up girl and do not let it get to you. If their menu and lifestyle were that “perfect”, they would not be reading your blog for advice. Keep doing what you are doing which is helping a lot of people. You have helped us more than you will ever know.
If this person is so dead set that dieting and exercise don’t work….why are they reading a weight loss blog???? Especially one that shows the true results of a real person that took this age old advice and made it work. You and your site are very motivational to a lot of people.
I also am having trouble losing the weight. But it’s because I’m not doing what I’m supposed to be doing! I am willing to take that responsibility and be honest with myself. Just wanting to lose weight, even as badly as I want to, doesn’t mean results!
Maybe this person really isn’t losing weight, but I find this really hard to believe if they are doing exactly what they say they are with NO cheating (and they are someone that actually has a weight problem to begin with).
You know when you’ve become famous(popular)when someone tries to tear you down. Sort of like the tabloids huh?
I’m not giving a response to this poster cause none is needed.
You are an inspiration to not only me but many others that read your site. I don’t know how many times I come on to read your post for the day, and thought..WOW!! Is she reading my mine?? I have learn so much from your site then any other professional weight lost site out there. If I fail at losing weight, its because I did something wrong, not you. I think once we hold ourselves accountable, and not others is when we begin too see the “real” truth about ourselves.
Maggie :)
perhaps the reason “anonymous” is having trouble losing weight is because 1200-1500 cal a day “in my humble opinion” doesn’t sound like enough especially for someone running 20-25 miles a week. I know my weight loss stalled the minute I increased my exercise without adding some food. Body went into starvation mode and once I added some more food I started losing weight again – wala. It’s not that easy and for people who cannot lose weight – they really need to consult their physician.
I can speak directly to that commentor as someone who has had a horrible time losing weight. I have some medical issues that are probably the culprit, but I worked out with a trainer for 6 months like a dog, ate right and really didn’t lose much on the scale at all. But, I have to say, I did lose inches.
It can be frustrating when things don’t come off as easily. But, Roni, your blog inspires me completely. Am I insanely jealous? Of course! But, I don’t see you as the enemy or selling some fake story that none of us will ever achieve! You are someone like me who has made it to the other side! I celebrate that and hope to join you one day!
Too bad this commentor can’t think of it that way. I encourage him or her to pull themselves out of their negative place and take this site for what it is–pure inspiration and a very generous person trying to share her knowledge to help us all.
Roni…love your site and I check in all the time to see what you have been up to. As far as the negative nelly….doesn’t sound like she eats enough first off and I bet she may be over estimating in some ways and under estimating in others (I used to do it also) Anyway, what you write is not law and you never claimed it was. Thanks for the words of wisdom and the yummy food choices that you have helped me find. Keep it up!!
By the way…we had the Turkey Taco Stew tonight…HUGE HIT!!!!
ronji :)
The Defintion of Insanity is to keep doing the same thing but expecting a different result….
I don’t think anyone who has been on this journey could call it easy. There are always ups and downs, but the difference is how we persevere. That’s a hard lesson to learn.
If I hit a plateau, how am I going to react? Am I going to give up because my hard work doesn’t seem to be paying off? Am I going to keep at it? Am I going to take a long hard look at what I’m doing? Am I really making the best possible choices I can make? What can I do differently?
I hope I’m making sense here. But for me, my journey has been just as every bit emotional as it has been physical. There’s nothing esay about it, but I do it everyday. Because I’m worth it and that’s probably been the hardest thing of all to learn.
Very interesting. Let me say that there is allot of evidence that most people don’t keep an accurate journal and usually aren’t eating as little as they think they are. With that said, Ronnie thanks for all you do and I am also scientific proof that eating healthy does work. 71lbs later. Instead on focusing of weight loss, more people should focus on being happy and healthy. The rest will come naturally. Every one has their what I call “Happy” weight. This is a healthy weight and it fluctuates. People be happy and healthy. Life is too short!!!!

Just going to add in with everyone else, your site is great! I thought that post was very comforting and inspirational. I really connected to it, and it was just so… true!
Fantastic!
Well, I think the people who leave comments like those are jealous of your success. Someone who eats good, excerses 1-2 hrs a day 4-6 times per week has one (or several) things going on….they either arent eating the right amount of calories, cause we all know your body needs food to burn fat. Or they’re body is already at a comfortable weight. Unfortunatly some people who are thin, but dont think they are thin view themselves differently and your body is not going to shed extra pounds if there is no “extra”. Or they arent eating as great as they think they are. Roni, your not going to please everyone! There will always be that negative person to try and bring you down. You have done great! Your obviously doing things right, so thats really all that matters. Is there a way to turn off the anonymous comment option, which would force people to at least leave their name? Just a thought!!!
Is it just me or have you noticed that a lot of people who blog are in that “results not typical” group? A pretty big percentage of the people I read have lost a good deal of weight, maintained that loss, and blog about the work that is involved in doing so. Easy is a word that I’ve never seen associated with their stories, but honesty is! Maybe there’s something in that message that would benefit “Anonymous”!
Love you, Roni!
You know for every one person that is going to dog you out…there will be 15 of us here to reassure you that you are setting great examples for all of us. I set time aside each day to check your blog…just to see what you have done, eaten, and wrote about. You are interesting…someone that I am sure we all wish were friends with and not just reading about. You have motivated so many people to start blogs, eat healthy and exercise. You are a role model!

Funny, the post actually sounds like it came from someone who came to your site looking for a quick and easy answer. They obviously didn’t take any time to read how you still work your butt off every day to keep things in check.
Roni works really hard on this blog, not just for herself, but for the rest of us that read it and enjoy it too. Look, we are all fat or have been fat, and that’s why we’re all here reading (or writing) this blog. Some things work for some people that won’t work for others. Someone needs to take their bitter pill and go somewhere else! Sheesh!
Roni,
I have been reading your site for a little over two weeks now. I love it! I recently earned my WW Lifetime Membership after losing 35 pounds. It took me a little over a year to accomplish what I had seemingly tried to accomplish most of my life. At one time I thought I wasn’t destined to lose weight either. After many failed attempts at dieting, WW provided the map I needed to follow to success.
As I enter into this new lifetime maintenance, your site has brought a new wind to my sails! I have leaned how to cut into a mango by golly! Because of your video post, I am now familiar with how to cut into a spaghetti squash and I am looking very forward to trying a couple of your spaghetti squash recipes.
As another blog response stated, there are mornings I come here to read your new thought for the day and would swear that you have read my mind. Weight loss is indeed a journey, and perfection 100% of the time is not realistic. You keep it real, and that in itself is a breath of fresh air.
Keep doing what you do here Roni! Your efforts are very much appreciated!
Ruthie
I have never commented before, I just lurk around finding motivation on your site…but that comment just really made me mad. I also have not been successful, but I am NOT going to give up! I just keep trying with motivation from people like you!!! Maybe that ‘anonymous’ poster should check with her doctor to see if there is an underlying problem!!!
Roni,
As some others have said here, I find that person’s post to simply be inaccurate. They must not be doing something that is part of the equation. Maybe they’re eating too few calories. Maybe they’re not using enough healthy oils, dairy or water day to day. Maybe they’re not counting all of the bites, licks and tastes. I’m sorry, but if you’re watching every single thing that goes in your mouth, and I mean, everything, you won’t stay unhealthy. Maybe you might not lose as much as you expected, but you will lose. You’ll also get healthier.
I kept floundering for ten years trying to figure out the magic secret of weight loss. The secret is finding out that there is no secret. More whole grains. More lean protein. MUCH MORE fruits and vegetables. Fewer refined and processed foods. More exercise. Like you, it was my Weight Watchers meetings that taught me those things…how much of this or that. But the biggest thing is knowing that it doesn’t happen overnight, it isn’t easy, it’s going to always be something you have to think about, and you have to make it a priority.
I read your blog every day and have used your blog area to help keep myself on track since August, 2007. I’ve lost 35 pounds and am almost to my goal. I didn’t ever think I could make it this far, and your blog has helped me get there. So thank you!
Proud to sign my name!
Amy
People lie. It’s a simple truth. I’m sure we’re not getting the whole story. Everyone that I know that has fully committed themselves to the Weight Watchers program looses weight and/or inches. But you have to commit. You can’t have amusement park weekends if you’re truely committed. (I had a friend who said his body was a temple during the week. On the weekends, it was an amusement park)
I think by reading through your blog and many of the blogs of the weight watchen community, there’s a great many that are “results not typical people”.
Or it could just be one of those negative people. They’re always around, trying to bring everyone else down with the.
For as long as I’ve been reading this blog, you have never once said it was easy.
By reading her comment, it almost looks like they are not eating enough for all of that exercise that is there. Just a thought!
I love this blog as always! Keep it up!
Oh.. and FYI… He STILL hasn’t called. HIS LOSS!
It sounds like she was running alot but didn’t mention weight training. Perhaps she needs\needed to incorporate more weight training in her 1-2 workouts at the gym to increase her metabolism and build lean muscle to fat ratio?
Or, perhaps she is lifting weights and was gaining lean muscle mass (which weighs more than fat) and thus the scale was staying the same.
I really don’t believe that this person did all of those things and could not lose weight. Maybe if they are already thing, but a heavy person would lose weight doing all of those things. Period. I hate when a 250,300+ woman says she has a plateau! Unless its medical, if you are consistently doing the right things and not in denial, you will lose weight.
I have yet to meet a fat person who is clinically unable to lose weight. I’m sure it exists, but I don’t believe it is that common.
Lorrie (IE: Fat because I eat too much and don’t exercise enough)
Comments like those make me CRAZY! It’s not easy and it’s a lifelong battle – but worth it! I had gastric bypass surgery 4 1/2 years ago and many people think that is the easy way out – believe me, it isn’t! Initially, you definately lose weight. The first couple of years I lost my 100 pounds and it was relatively “easy”. Now, I am a Weight Watcher maintainer and pretty much follow the same pattern that you do – I’m about your height and weight and some days I weigh 145 and some days 149. I know on those 149 days that is time to start counting points and get those extra pounds off. Anyway, my whole point being, it doesn’t matter what method you use to LOSE the weight, it is a constant battle to keep it off. And by the way, I find it hard to believe that a person that does all those things (low calories, exercise, etc) doesn’t lose weight. Thanks for all your work on providing this blog – it’s a great source of inspiration for me.
Weight loss isn’t easy, but there is a path for everyone that works and learning from others is one of the fastest ways to find your own way. How sad that this person has convinced themself they can’t lose weight.
I’ve never commented before, but I feel compelled to now. I am in the EXACT same position as anonymous, and I think a lot of people feel that way sometimes…I work out a lot and I eat well, and I’m stuck in the 150′s and just won’t move. Honestly, I don’t really know what to do at this point but I know I want to be the healthiest person I can be.
While I still want to lose more weight, I’ve focused more on strength training and now I see mini-accomplishments like muscles becoming more visible and my abilities to run faster and further…maybe “anonymous” should try this to stop being such a bitter betty?
It’s absurd for her (I presume a she) to claim that you’re doing anything other than being an amazing source of motivation for all of us – those that are losing and those that are trying to figure out what works for them.
Whoah hi novel! I just wanted to share.
Easy LOL.
As for the poster…I dont think you had ENOUGH calories. If you were REALLY HONESTLY (I say that because I tend to lie to myself…. a lot :( ) eating that much, and working out THAT much…your body simply needs more calories then you were giving it. I would say your body went into starvation mode…your not going to lose like that!
Allie
Lurker here. I’d like to see a food diary showing that the person who made that anonymous comment actually stayed on track with what they claim. Unless there is a medical condition involved, it all boils down to calories in vs calories out.
Sounds to me like anonymous (1) Isn’t accounting properly for the food intake or (2) Doesn’t have the will power to do this long term.
Roni…this is why I read your page everyday, soon as I get out of the shower every morning. You care about people, negative or positive. You are a real person and sometimes the rude ones bother you. I have lost almost 38 lbs since September, and made almost everything you have created. YOU ARE THE BEST!!!
Have a great day!
Tiffany, Windsor, ON
I am willing to share my two cents. I think the anonymous friend should actually eat more. I was training for marathon and was on ww eating about 1200 calories and after my miles got to about 20 miles per week my body stopped losing weight. There is such thing as hypo-metabolic condition which basically means your body is not getting enough food and therefore desperately stores what ever it can put its hands on, in the form of fat! Ironically, to lose weight you do need to eat enough but not garbage food. I will advise to the anonymous to go to a nutritionist who is experienced in dealing with athletes and get her metabolic rate checked and start eating more of good food. 1200 calories is barely enough to even cover BMR(basal metabolic rate) for most people.
And it is a very frustrating condition because you think you are doing everything right yet you don’t lose an ounce! and just to giver her/him a heads up, you might gain a bit at the beginning of your eating more treatment but don’t go back to your old routine. Hang in there and your metabolism will catch up.
You know people are funny! To take the time to read your blog & then post a comment like that just has to make you laugh…even if it makes you scratch your head for a moment.
That said, I subscribed to your feed & look forward to your adventures daily!
Debbie
Just keep doing what you’re doing, Roni. We all love you! You, your blog and your recipes help so many of us in ways we can’t even count. I’ve been doing Weight Watchers since August 2007…have lost 59 pounds…and don’t go to the WW website every day, BUT I DO come here every single day…numerous times, just to see if you’ve posted anything else, or to read comments.
There is no WAY that person did the things they claimed to do and not lost weight. I mean come on!
I am rolling my eyes. Anonymous doesn’t seem to be paying attention, eh?
Easy?!?!
I love your site. I check it every morning when the kids have gone to school, husband is at work…..this is my time. I love the video blogs and look to you for my weightloss inspiration. Keep up the good work:)
Ressa
Roni, Don’t sweat it. You are awesome and this person is angry for not losing weight and possibly jealous of your success.
Keep it up!
Roni,
I agree with everyone else!
You are so upfront and honest with both your success and your struggles! Never once have I read in your blog that it was “easy”
I’m finding this maintaing stuff a little harder than the loss phase.
I/we get so much from your thoughts and recipes. Don’t let, in my opinion, a bitter, jealous, person get to you- the rest of us love you!
Hi Roni -
I saw 100 packs of Swedish Fish in the grocery yesterday and thought of you! I had never heard of Swedish Fish until I started following your blog. Enjoy and take care!!
I really like your blog, but I love the receipes and the product reviews. You should be proud of what you have done, it wasn’t easy. That said, I don’t think you all are necessarily being fair to the commenter. There are several websites devoted to being Healthy At Every Size and read some of them might help you see why that poster feels this way. My fave: Shapely Prose http://kateharding.net/
Oh, well, Roni …
It takes a lot of courage to do what you’re doing here. There are and always will be naysayers and strugglers. Obviously you touch the majority of people positively and that’s what counts.
I believe the quote an earlier poster was looking for is by Tony Robbins. “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”
Keep up the incredible work. Your thoughts and comments are mightily appreciated because they give guidance, insight, and some good chuckles.
Tracey
It’s what their not doing that is making the difference and that is the issue. I totally agree with what the first commenter said “would rather not be held accountable for it.” That sums it up…
However, in reading the other comments, I agree with so many of you …or should I say “us.”
Thanks Again,
Erin
Sounds like that person is eating too few calories!!!
Thanks for your positive words!
We appreciate you Roni-keep doing what you are doing!
Well, to state that just because you did it, doesn’t mean it can be done by all. Is that putting blame on you, Roni, just because anonymous can’t lose weight? Well, I’ll tell you a little secret, losing weight can be done by one person and one person only and I think we know who that person is and just a hint, it’s not Roni! Keep on doing what you do best, Roni, be informational, supportive, honest and inspire the rest of us to do the same. I wish I could blame you for my unsuccessful weight loss this week but alas I know who made the bad decisions and, unfortunately, it wasn’t you!
Anonymous needs to see a doctor. If anonymous was truly eating that way and working out then anonymous absolutely should have lost weight. Anonymous may have a serious medical problem that needs to be addressed. Certain cancers make you gain wieight, maybe anonymous has a thyroid problem, OR maybe anonymous isn’t being honest with herself about how much she was really eating and working out.
~Paula
Roni, YOU are the reason I walked through the door at WW November 10, 2007. I stumbled on your blog and after seeing your results with WW, it proved to me that it IS possible. I’ve lost 31 pounds since that day and no, it isn’t “easy” but I honestly haven’t found it to be “hard” either.
I check your site every day, faithfully, and you help me to keep going on those days when it isn’t easy.
Thanks for doing what you do and please keep it up! ((((hugs))))
i feel completely opposite of “anonymous”! i would never think, “oh, just because roni did it doesn’t mean i can do it…” instead the way i see it is, “if she did it, then i know i can too!”
