I hope it isn't too late to add my two cents:

I think the whole idea of artificial sweetners making us fat is sympotmatic of why our country is overweight:

We are always looking to blame something instead of taking responsibility for what we are eating.

Sweetners don't make people fat - eating more calories than you expend makes you gain weight - period.

Likewise - their is no magic chemical to make you lose weight.
It's about accountability - we need to accept responsibility for how much we eat.

-Wendy

I just want to make sure that people understand that just because something is "natural" does not mean it is good for you. Tobacco, lard, sugar-- mushrooms that grow in your yard are all natural, but not good for you.

There are also many artificial substances that are very helpful and we could not live without, namely medications. They are harmful in large amounts, does that mean we should do without them? I don't take tylenol or motrin often, but I am sure glad for it when I need it. I give it to my kids too when they need it. I can't imagine doing without it when they are burning up with fever. If they were to have too much it could kill them, does that mean we don't give to them at all? The key here is moderation and proper education.

I try to use artificial sweetners sparingly and opt for stevia whenever I can. The Japanese use this herb to sweeten nearly every food product they have on the market (baked goods, soft drinks candy, etc) I would love to see it used as frequently here in the US so we can break our national dependence on the waist-widening sugar cane.

Artificial sweeteners have physically made me sick. Years ago, I would drink a diet soda a day, maybe more. After a year or more of this, I would have the worst headaches and at times would throw up.
Finally figured out it was the artificial sweeteners in the yogurt, diet sodas and other "diet" items I had been consuming.

I completely stay away from anything artifically sweetened now and highly recommend not putting anything artificial in your body!

I don't watch American Idol, but if I did I would more than likely cry. I cry during grammys.

I use splenda to sweeten some things; agave nector to sweeten others ~ depends on what I'm making.

I drink Crystal Light every once in a while. And I use Splenda too much. I keep trying to quit, but it's so hard when you see the calorie difference. Also, I think Splenda tastes better and lasts longer in a lot of things.

But sorbitol makes my stomach hurt!

How are you doing on your 'jump back challenge' that you made to yorself a while ago?

Hi Roni. I try to avoid artificial sweeteners whenever possible. However, my avoidance is more from the taste, rather than the health aspect.
Aspartame and/or Splenda in pre-packaged foods or drinks makes my tongue feel funny. This is why I completely avoid diet sodas. My mom says it's in my head. I don't think it is. How can my tongue feeling weird be in my head, even when I don't know the fake stuff in in something I eat, it feels weird
Ironically, I use 1 pkg. Sweet n' Low in a large glass of Iced Tea and I use a little Splenda in my cereal instead of sugar - and it doesn't bother me at all.
I think it is the large amounts of the fake sweeteners that are in the store-bought foods/drinks that affect me.

Jenn
jennscookin@yahooc.com

Hey Roni! I stopped using artificial sweetener about 6 months ago and saw a dramatic change. Although I started doing yoga, running, and eating more sensibly, I feel that cutting out artificial sweeteners played a key role in my weight loss and overall feeling of well being. I now use natural turbinado sugar when needed, but I don't eat very much sugar. It is amazing! I had been thinking about cutting out artificial sweeteners for some time. It was my addiction to crystal lite that finally made me realize that I needed to make a change. I feel great!!

i probably use about 3 packets of splenda a day (morning coffee and afternoon tea)... i don't bake with it though, still prefer real sugar, and i don't drink diet soda... i DO have a light yogurt everyday but it's only 6 ounces - doubt that is going to kill me... :o)
