Score 1 for Mommy!

I have so many little things to tell you but I need to start with something I forgot to mention this weekend.
Friday night I went grocery shopping to get a head start on my crazy weekend. I just went for some staples and my normal weekly supplies. I especially needed bread. Since I work 2 evenings a week, the husband makes a lot of sandwiches. Now, I’ve been buying the same whole wheat bread for over a year and it took me about 2 years before that to find a brand the husband would be satisfied with. See, I used to buy 2 loaves but that’s ridiculous. First of all, we don’t use that much bread so it would just go moldy or I would have the same loaf in the freezer forever. Secondly, I don’t see any possible reason to buy non 100% whole wheat, it’s just illogical to me. Long story long, I made him switch to whole wheat. It took a L-O-N-G time but he’s been eating it for over a year. .
Well, apparently I grabbed the wrong loaf off the shelf and didn’t discover it until I got home. I had too much to do to go back and I figured one loaf of white bread won’t kill us (plus I has some leftover whole wheat for the toddler).
So Saturday I make everyone sandwiches for lunch. The husband takes one bite and says,
“What’s up with the bread? Is it different?”
To that I reply,
“Yeah, sorry, I grabbed the non-whole wheat by mistake. I’d thought you’d be excited. Do you like it better?”
Now, I’m totally worried he’s going to say yes and force me to buy the old stuff again. TO MY SURPRISE he says,
“No, it doesn’t taste right. I like the other stuff you buy better.”
What is this I hear? He LIKES the healthier, whole-wheat stuff better! This is the same guy who WILL NOT eat whole grain pasta, who took 2 years to convince to eat the whole grain bread in the first place and who cares less about what he puts in his body then dog.
I almost fainted. Score 1 for Mommy! I guess I won the Battle of the Bread in the War on Healthy Family Eating.
AAhhhh that makes me feel good. Honestly, and I just may be super weird here, nothing makes me feel better then getting someone to try/eat/enjoy something healthy. I think I found my passion.
Speaking of passion, I got so excited writing that story I totally forgot what else I wanted to tell you. Ummmm let’s see.
- I came home and made the BEST tortilla pizza after work. I just had to share the picture. It was delicious!
- I updated my workout progress. Not sure if anyone was following it but I had to change the format, it was just too much to manage. Plus I feel very good about working out. I think I’ve successfully integrated into my daily routine. The reason why I jounraled it in the first place was for accountability and to help make it habit. It worked! I will still update it in an abbreviated form.
- Notice my weight is up a bit from Friday. I refuse to get scale angst. If you really look at my weight from day to day, the fluctuations are quite normal.
Ok, I know I had more but I’m watching a recorded version of Heroes from earlier and I need to get to bed at a decent hour.

What brand whole wheat bread is it? Does it contain high fructose corn syrup? I’m having a devil of a time finding bread (white or whole wheat) that doesn’t contain HFCS — Pepperidge Farm does have a line of breads that don’t contain HFCS, but, so far, none that the kiddo will eat.
Whole wheat pasta — much of it contains too strong a whole wheat flavor for me, the whole wheat taste masks the flavors of the sauce. However, Hodgson Mills Whole Wheat Bowtie Pasta is quite mild-tasting — my son will eat it mixed in with regular shells for his mac, whereas the Hodgson Mills Whole Wheat Shells were way too strong for both of us. If you haven’t tried this brand of bowtie pasta, you might see what your hubby thinks of it.

Can’t wait for you to post your new recipe for the banana muffins. I have made them several times the way they are posted now and really like them. Post soon please. I am still trying to get the hubby to eat wheat bread. My kids eat it just fine but he packs 3 sammies a day for his lunch on squishy white bread. Yuck is what I say.

Glenda – It’s whole wheat potato bread by Martins. I’m not sure abnout the HFCS, I’ll look next time I pick it up. It’s not first choice, like I said it was a 3 year compromise! lol

My husband hates whole wheat pasta too! Any progress in getting your husband to eat it?
