Odd Observation
October 3, 2007
This is one of those ‘I just need to know if this happens to other people’ observations. I could just be me.
All right, so here goes.
After my long, 12 hour, day at work I came home a little hungry. Normally I make a nice healthy snack like Quick Tortilla Pizza, Tortilla Rollup Bites, or English Muffin Tomato Pizza. I try to make something that makes me feel full, is super low in points and loaded with veggies. I figure that’s a nice way to end the day. Today I made a nice turkey sandwich on a tortilla. It was good. I loaded it up with veggies and had some pickles on the side. It was super satisfying and at that point, I ate 26 points, not a bad day!
Then about 15 minutes later, maybe even sooner, I was hungry again. And I don’t mean the “I want something hunger”. I mean the full blown, stomach growing, empty feeling kind of hunger. Is it possible to be hungrier AFTER you just eat something?
Needless to say, I hit some snacks since then. I wasn’t out of control or anything, just hungry. I just don’t understand how I can be hungrier after just eat something. It’s happen to me before so now I’m wondering if it happens to you.
Just curious.

Hello Roni ~ that happens to me too! What I’ve done when I’m hungry after eating a good healthy meal is set my microwave timer for 30 minutes, that’s how long it takes for the brain to get the signal that you are full. I drink lots of water and it usually passes. Thanks for sharing with us.
By the way, I loved your photos from Saturday, you look beautiful and they other shots look like you were enjoying yourself.
take care,
Nancy

I have often experienced exactly what you are describing. Many interesting studies address the issue of the “hunger hormone,” ghrelin, it’s role at it relates to eating-related signals, etc. Drs. Oz and Roizen of the “YOU….” books discuss this briefly. Might want to check it out if you haven’t already. And then there is still the important factor of waiting at least 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you are full. Regardless, like you, sometimes when I am finished eating and should be full, my appetite seems to stimulate into a high-gear mode and I end up hungrier than when I started too, so very frustrating! Perhaps being conscious of this phenomenon will help to keep it under better under control and not turn into a self-defeating behavior. YOU ARE NOT ALONE – BET YOU HEAR FROM MANY!!! /DMS

Roni, I like to have sugar free gum when that happens to me. I get to chew, and the strong mint ruins the flavor of whatever else you might want to pop in your mouth.

Yes.Yes and Yes. All I know is that I find one of two scenarios: 1. It’s about that time, hormones are a little off, and I just seem to want a little more. But when the P is not the case…I find a day like like this usually follows a string of lower calorie days…you know…a few days when things are right on point…healthy, balanced and totally satisfying then BOOM… an oddly hungry day! As long as it all balances is the end…it’s all good!

Yes, this happens to me too. Sometimes right after I eat I’m really hungry again. It’s weird. Sometimes I think I wait too long between meals so that may be why but other times I can’t figure out why. When I feel like that, I’ll usually eat something like a sugar free jello pudding and that helps until it’s time for my nightly snacks. ;)

Yes, this happens to me, too. I try to ignore it or munch on baby carrots. Thank goodness for baby carrots!

Another one here! Last Saturday I wasn’t hungry but was making oatmeal with baked apples after my workout for breakfast. I thought about putting breakfast off, but I decided I needed to replenish my fuel for the day. 20 minutes after a HUGE bowl of oatmeal I was hungry!! So strange. But I’ve found that what usually cures the hunger is a big glass of water. Perhaps the body is just thirsty? Try drinking water next time and see if that helps. I also eat breakfast most mornings at 7:30 and by 9:00 I’m feeling “hungry” but again, it’s my cue to drink 12-16 oz of water and I’m feeling full again.

Yuppers Roni!
Some days there is just no filling the empty pit that is my stomach.
FYI – I completed “stealing” your food table, and it looks good so far. I had to do some fancy coding to make it work w/ blogger, but Peter Chen, a retired Assoc Prof who makes helping html dummies his supplemental retirement income, pointed me in the right direction.
I seem to have web-savy Professors coming outta my ears. *cough* *cough*
But what would we do without you?!
Re: the tummy that finds no satisfaction… I came back from a run tuesday night and ate every one of the 7 Aps I earned. Last night I had a late class and didn’t run. And I was hungry but couldn’t eat because of a canker. So I did Strength Training sets. 3 Arms sets w/ 9 lb weights, and 2 ab sets on a stability ball. The Ab sets cured the hunger quick.
So activate the abdominals, and drink h2o, to trick the tummy into thinking now is not the time to eat.

This is totally normal, Roni. In fact, it’s unrealistic for us to expect our bodies to need the exact same amount of food from day to day. Any number of factors can contribute to increased, or decreased, hunger on a particular day. The important thing is learning to listen to your body’s signals when that happens. If you’re hungry, eat a little more. Just make sure it’s a filling, healthy choice. Chances are, if your body is asking for food, it needs it and will burn it appropriately.

I’ve noticed that…especially after eating fruit or chewing gum for me. I am starved after.

I have noticed that some days are like that. In addition to harmones, maybe weather has an impact too. When I have a pigging out night and I talk with people on my next WW meeting, they concur! The same exact day, they had their heads in the refrigerator and had their mouths stuffed! Cheers, today is a new day!

It actually happened to me last night after my basketball game. I ate a flat out wrap pizza (with 2ox of cheese too!) and I was more starving when I was finished than when I started! Thank God for some already made egg salad so I had that on some WW bread and finally felt full.

The days that this happens to me, I actually feel more in control of feeding my body, believe it or not. It seems to be tied to my cycle, maybe hormones spiked my appetite. But to feel real hunger and not just bored hunger is kind of a cool feeling, no matter when it happens. It makes me realize that my body is a machine and I need to listen to it.

It happens. I usally try to wait about 20 minutes after my meal. Most of the time I am full after this time but sometime I am still hungry or as you say I get hungry again.

I’m so glad you posted this! I asked this same thing on the WW Message Boards one day and got horrible responses! If I’m not hungry during lunch, I still eat because I only get a 30 minute lunch break and I know if I don’t eat, I’ll be starving later. But sometimes after I eat…I’m hungrier than ever! Glad to know it’s not only me.

This has definitely happened to me. Typically, for one of three reasons: either I let myself get too hungry, I ate too quickly, or I’ve been thinking about food all day – like when I’ve been grocery shopping or working on my menus.
Love your site!

This usually only happens to me when I don’t eat enough protein or fat. If I eat something that has little fat and protein, I am not satisfied. Or should I say, my BODY is not satisfied. Despite the fact that a lot of people still consider fat to be the devil, I don’t go along with that. If I am not inhaling huge portions of pizza and cheeseburgers, and I am consciously eating reasonable portions of healthy fats, like avocado, nuts, olive oil, etc, I still lose weight. It has to do with portions and calories, at least for me. Try adding a little fat and you might just feel better.

Hi Roni:
I found a points calculator on http://www.javascript.internet.com/math-related/weight-watchers-points-calculator.html.
When I put your turkey chili through the javascript calculator came up with 5 points per servings. Any idea why the discrepancy?
Is it lower because its giving full credit for the fibre??

anon – can’t get that link to work, not sure why the discrepancy but I don’t doubt it. I just estimated the calories using nutritiondata.com.
