Chinese Takeout Night
October 4, 2007
I defrosted tilapia for tonight but had NO desire to cook AT ALL. I think by Thursday I’m just spent for the week. I can hardly keep my eyes open now. Anyway, we decided to order Chinese food. Normally I play it safe, get steamed shrimp and chicken with mixed veggies, and then make my own sauce with some soy sauce and ground ginger. I love doing this and I end up have a HUGE satisfying meal for a lot less fat and calories while still ordering take out. How awesome is that?
Well tonight, my brain was on vacation. I don’t know what I was thinking but I just picked up the phone and mindlessly ordered. Just look at some of the options for Chinese take out! The scariest one for me was Lemon Chicken weighing in at 1,400 calories. “It’s like eating three McDonald’s McChicken sandwiches plus a 32-oz. Coke.” OUCH! That was one of my favorite college meals. No wonder I gained over 50 pounds at school!
Now don’t get me wrong what I ordered was good and I don’t think I did “bad” or “ruined” the day but I just feel blagh now. I would have much rather eaten a lighter less salty meal. I can feel my body holding on to water now. Even my rings are getting tight. Blagh, I said. To make it even worse I was planning to weigh in tomorrow. Again, what the heck was I thinking?!?

I just ate Chinese for dinner myself. I used to eat a whole order of chicken chow mein all to myself – 1200 calories! Geez!! Tonight I had a teriaki chicken rice bowl with only half an order of rice and double veggies with the sauce on the side. It was really good!

I have had the same problem with Chinese food…I ate it the night before a weigh in and it was a disaster. I read on the WW boards that you can hold 0.5-2 lbs of water after Chinese just because of the salt. I LOVE your idea of the sauce you make for your own steamed shrimp and veggies.
I have a new rule: no Chinese within 48 hours of a weigh in. But I feel your pain…we’ve had no husband home all week and very busy activity week for the kids…take out is more convienent but also more deadly at the same time…

My kids (ages 1 and 2) and I always split a chicken with broccoli and white rice. It works for us and we always have some left over too. I am a sucker for chinese though, so I cant go to a buffet or I crumble.

you can always ask chinese places to hold the salt. that helps keep the sodium down.

Thanks for sharing that link for the Chinese takeout… No WONDER I used to gain so much weight so fast! I used to eat a whole sesame chicken, whole lo mein, egg rolls, crab rangoon, all with at least 5 packets of soy sauce.
