Battle of the Baked Goods
September 6, 2007
What do you do with time to kill before a doctors appointment and a growling stomach? Go to Panera Bread of Course!
As soon as I walked in I thought, why are you here? You can only get yourself in trouble! It wasn’t lunch time yet so my selection was limited to pastries and baked goods. UGH!
I decided the two best choices for me would either be the reduced fat blueberry muffin or a whole wheat bagel. While in the 10 minute line I must have flipped flopped a million times in my head. I couldn’t decide what would be more satisfying and the better choice points-wise and health-wise.
When it was finally my turn to order I unconsciously said reduced fat blueberry muffin please. They just looked so appetizing! Plus I wanted to give a good muffin a try before starting experimenting with more recipes. ;~)
Let me tell you this muffin was DIVINE! It was sweet and moist. I actually felt guilty eating it so I only ate half. Then about an hour later I ate the other half. It was my way of making it last longer. ;~)
So of course I had to come home and investigate whether or not my choice was the "correct" one. Here’s what i uncovered.
| reduced fat blueberry muffin | whole wheat bagel |
|---|---|
| 360 calories | 340 calories |
| 10g of fat | 2.5g of fat |
| 1g of fiber | 6g of fiber |
| 35g of sugar | 6g of sugar |
| 6g of protein | 13g of protein |
| 8 points | 6 points |
So after my investigation I’m thinking the whole wheat bagel would have been the better choice. It has less fat, less sugar and more protein. Plus I’m sure it would have been much more filling. At least I know now that if I want to splurge on a sweet blueberry muffin it will only cost me 2 more points!
So here’s my menu from memory today. I lost my journal somewhere. As you can see I have so much I want to post about. I hope to catch up this weekend.

I just have to say that you imspire me. I have been trying to lose weight for 3 years. I am a member of LA WeightLoss and at one point I was 2 ounces away from my goal of 50 lbs. Needless to say that in the course of 2 years I have struggled and put back on maybe 15. I have recently started back on plan due to what I have been reading on your site. I tried WW before and for me LAWL holds me more accountabile. I am glad WW has worked so well for you and I just wanted to say thank you for the daily posts as it has been helping me out alot.

It is so hard to make these decisions on the fly and why it would be so great to have nutritional information readily available at the point of purchase.

Also another good choice at Panera is their Lo-carb Asiago Cheese Bagel. It is 4 points and yummy!

They have the best soup for low points! Sometimes I splurge and have it in a bread bowl…usually the soup is about 2-3 points.

I think the blueberry muffin would of been the choice for me. I would have wanted something on the bagel which would have added extra points and I could have eaten the muffin plain. The low carb bagel and the soup sound great I love it when I find solutions to eating out. Thanks, Cathy
